Fairgames, if it comes out, but I don't think it will.
I said something similar when the Saints Row reboot came out (and swiftly failed). Even if the writing hadn't been cringe, what did the game offer that I couldn't get from a previous Saints Row game, or any of the other open world games already on the market?
I don't think studios do elevator pitches for investors any more. They write Fortnite's annual turnover on a whiteboard and say 'This could be us. Maybe. Probably not. Statistically not, actually. But maybe.'
It always gets me because no game other than Fortnite could sustain being Fortnite. It gets new content every single week, major updates every month and is constantly adding new content and upgrades on top of a full suite for custom games. The developer turnover rate is intense because the game is effectively always crunching. Everyone wants to be Fortnite without realizing that it’s extremely expensive and labor intensive to do so.
Also for better or worse, Fortnite has one of the more consumer friendly monetization models, something no one else copies.
The main battle passes costs $8 each, but for a one time $11 a month purchase you get all current passes plus $10 of in game currency, and the main battle pass always gives you $9 worth of in game currency so you can in theory just buy it once and always get the next one. And if you keep the $11 a month Sub even when there isn’t a new pass, you get an exclusive skin every month, outfit variations for your existing exclusive skins, and still the $10 in currency. Some people even game the system by paying for the sub 3 weeks before the season ends, and getting both the current battle pass that’s ending and the new one for the $11 price.
On top of that, epic gives you reward points for every purchase that can accrue and be used for more in game purchases or any other epic game store purchase.
That’s the thing that baffles me the most about all these service games. Fortnite proved that you can make a fuck ton of money and still not rip off people. Yes, $5 a song is ridiculous, $5-$8 a dance is awful, and so of the cars cost $20. But you can still get a lot of stuff for cheap, for many $8 every 3 months, and 100% of the game’s non-cosmetic content is free to play without any limits, caps, or forced grind. The only negative for a free player is that the default character’s race changes every single game and you’ll be forced to occasionally be a black woman(which is a genius way to convince people to pay for skins… or sign up for a free lego account to get the lego girl skin just so you’re not a black woman)
