HVAC/R and Air Conditioning - Why survive SHTF if it gets hot

We have an HVAC/R thread that is on page 1 bro
I'm used to people berating others that some esoteric piece of tranny news was already posted or something like that, never thought I'd see the day where someone on k-farms would be like "NIGGUH WE ALREADY GOT A HVAC THREAD BISH"

Being underground is an ancient and proven method of battling the heat, that's why the basement is always the coolest part of the house.

If you're interested in low-cost non-mechanical cooling, have a basement bedroom.

Horses for courses.

I used to be all about split-system air conditioning, until the regime under which I live made it mandatory for all new split units to be fitted with a remote cut-off switch, to allow electricity providers to turn the unit off and on via a smart meter.

The ex-marital home had a ducted split unit installed just before the new regs, so the new owners are enjoying 100% uncucked ac even though that house has a smart meter fitted.

Not all houses in my country have smart meters, but the electricity companies are practically begging their subscribers to take one on (in the case of the aforementioned ex-marital home, our provider basically said you're going to have the smart meter or else).

Ofc you have no say in the matter if you put solar on, unless you can go off-grid. Based af, but also expensive af.

For my use case, window units and solar panels are the way to go. Sure it means acquiescing to The Man wrt getting a smart meter, but at least those cunts can't cut my air off if it's plugged into a standard 10A or 15A GPO, nor am I giving them any shekels for the privilege in the middle of a stinking hot sunny Australian summer's day.

The best of proper air conditioners (which swamp coolers technically are. but this is my post. fuck you.)
No the fuck they are not. They do not provide cooling for dick in the climates where you most need cooling, and only make a hot, humid room feel slightly less hot and a thousand times more humid.

Heat pumps are based as fuck. And air conditioning, though power hungry
Cooling mode power usage is NOTHING compared to what gets drawn in winter. My heat pump has been keeping things easily comfy this summer, even when it was hot as all hell outside for a week. In winter, though, as soon as it gets below freezing, COP drops through the floor and the backup resistance strips have to kick in.

One cold day in January uses more power than a scorching WEEK in late July. Give me gas heat any day. Or someone pay for me to have wells drilled to install a ground-source unit.

Have you considered having a furnace installed as the backup heat instead?

Would that I could. Sadly no gas lines, and nowhere to put a tank.
Hmm. To my understanding, Asian-built mini-splits tend to be specced to handle lower temps before losing CoP than most American-made central air systems do and the American manufacturers broadly stopped making real advances some time in the 70s or 80s. Maybe look into getting one installed to supplement your central system?

Probably just gonna look at a "cold climate" unit to replace the current one with. Supposedly they're good for at least 1.5 down to -15°F. Then if all else fails I still get a scroll compressor and variable speed. I assume that can be paired with a single-stage indoor blower and not have to replace the air handler/coils with a variable unit as well.

Assuming there's still anything left in stock anywhere that uses 410A. "Oh we're not making it illegal, we're just going to jack the price up on it and push something else at the exact moment the patent expires!"
