Let's Players originating from Something Awful - ft. VoidBurger, General Ironicus, Bob Kamoc

That would probably be because she's the psycho who originally went off on Lowtax (I'm sorry, I mean L*wt*x) when the Schmorky stuff happened, calling him a child abuser and such, and all the other assholes circled the drain and got themselves banned defending her meltdown.

So basically, they tolerate her and put her in vids because of pride/pity? "Sarah stood up to Rich, and got banned for it, we gotta show her we care about that decision. She's the pioneer of the SA exodus"

No, she was in at least one Retsupurae video back in the day:

I'm not sure why she's been in multiple Retsupurae longplays, though. Presumably she just asked to be, it's not like Slowbeef cares about the quality of the guests.

Anyone who includes "I'M A GIRL" in their username probably isn't going to have much good commentary to offer.

Anyone who feels the need to tell people on the internet that they're a girl, really, because it means they have nothing else to contribute and/or they know their personality isn't cute enough to come across as feminine, but they desperately wish it was. People like VoidBurger like to talk gender equality, but also feel the need to tell people (not friends, where you might actually mention personal details of your life) that she's a girl because she considers it one of her 'special' points. She doesn't even have the excuse of growing up in the social media era because she's an old hag.

On a sort-of related note, when I still lurked SA on occasion I remember people joked about how you could check if someone on the internet was an actual girl or not by asking them what brand of tampons they used and seeing how long it took them to respond. I wonder how that'd fly these days.

edit: oh right this is the LP thread not the general SA one, WHATEVER.

Retsupurae was best when they made fun of bad LPs. People who placed a camera in front of their TV or answered phone calls during runs. The videos about BillyMC or Cornshaq were mean but they were funny. They could make a fun series of videos just showing off shitty flash games.

That's why it's weird to see Slowbeef and other people in the Retsupurae orbit become such humorless, perpetually-distressed goons. That, and the whole format of shitty camcorder LPs is pretty much dead. There's just no reason for Retsupurae to even exist anymore.

They've run out of good video fodder and long since lost the ability to be funny. Like an old racehorse past its prime, sometimes the best thing you can do is put it out of its misery.

I liked some of the videos making fun of awful games I'd never heard of (like Afterfall). It's a shame they'll never do Ride To Hell, that's probably the worst game I've ever played.

So a year ago Slowbeef streamed an old Puzzle game named Klax and invited Diabetus on and they talked for two hours. It's possibly the closest thing we will get to a final Retsutalk episode.

Link to the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veZ5bjPlF8M&feature=youtu.be&t=5713

The video's two hours long, so I've summarised and transcribed the interesting parts of it below:

Just as Diabetus came onto the stream Slowbeef’s wife arrived home and there was some humorous banter between her, Slowbeef and Diabetus. They make jokes about Slowbeef getting cucked, it’s mentioned that his wife thinks that Slowbeef spends a weird amount of time in bathrooms and they talk about other random stuff.
After about 45 minutes she goes to bed, leaving Slowbeef and Diabetus. But she then comes into the chat and is apparently watching the live stream on a laptop in another room.

Slowbeef says he thinks it’s weird that people do things like write to videogame companies about things they don’t like in videogames, and how people are generally more outspoken about videogames now than they used to be. He finishes by saying that maybe he’s just looking at the past through rose-tinted glasses.

He also claims that he wasn’t actually mad in the old Retsupurae Snatcher videos where he shrieked at people talking over the game.

Slowbeef says that it’s fun to talk about streaming/Youtube things like ad revenue and that not many people are talking about that stuff.
He talks about Darksyde Phil revealing that he (Phil) has a very low CPM (meaning that he gets relatively little money compared to other Youtubers/streamers).
Slowbeef says that he heard that Darksyde Phil actually gained viewers after he masturbated on stream.

They talk about “the potential of doing this full time,” meaning making streaming/Youtube content for a living.

https://youtu.be/veZ5bjPlF8M?t=3879

Slowbeef says that he knows that Diabetus is sceptical of making a career out of it, but that he himself thinks that “it can happen.”
Slowbeef says that going to business school “fucked [him] up,” and that he thinks in terms of money, that he’s a “greedy bastard, now” but finishes by saying “not really,” implying that he’s at least partially joking.
Diabetus says that it might be feasible if the person doing it has low living expenses and a modest lifestyle, but doing it with a family to support, needing to think about retirement, having college expenses would make it a more difficult proposition. Diabetus says that, with these things in mind, that he cannot see himself succeeding at it.
Slowbeef says that he’s fascinated by “the whole thing,” and Diabetus says that he is too.
Slowbeef says that an entire industry has emerged and that “we were kind of at the forefront of it” and says, in a joking tone, that now “it’s just full of racists and stuff.” Then says that that last remark was just him kidding, but adds “sort of”.
Then he says “but I guess I’m not kidding, really!”
Diabetus says that, as Slowbeef’s wife is in the chat, what does she think about Youtube/streaming as a career. Slowbeef responds by saying that they have actually talked about it. Slowbeef says that it would take their big expenses just being gone for it to be viable.
He says that he and his wife have “done things smart, financially” so “it’s not like it could never ever happen” but that it’s a sports car-esque dream.
Slowbeef comments on someone in chat saying that it’s a big risk and that if it doesn’t pay off he’d be in big trouble by saying “to be totally fair, you can say that about quite a few things, you know, like quite a few whole industries, even.” He goes on to say: “so, I work in I.T., right. And, like, the big hot thing that I’m working at now is mobile – like, phone, y’know, smartphone shit. But, like, not that long ago it was web. And it still kind of is web. It’s just that, like, the hot thing that people really want, that kinda deal.”

Slowbeef goes on to talk about being at a convention and one of the members of the Best Friends let’s play group introducing him to someone as “the guy that invented let’s play” which Slowbeef says he enjoyed. He says that that kind of thing happens very rarely, then talks about a time where he met Jontron and Jontron also introducing him to people as the guy that invented let’s play.
Slowbeef throws Jontron under the bus for being a racist and calls him a Nazi later in the stream (presumably the time he met Jontron was before Jontron made controversial statements and was accused of racism).

Slowbeef mocks NintendoCapriSun (a let’s player) for playing with his Switch during a panel that he was on at PAX.

TieTuesday says in the chat that “my only interaction with Jontron was telling him to get out the way so that I could piss.”

Slowbeef says that after he wrote an article for Polygon a bot followed him and mocked him. Apparently the bot does that all for all Polygon writers.

Slowbeef rags on Pewdiepie a little for being a racist.

Diabetus mentions it being ten years since his Captain Novolin let’s play and Slowbeef laments it having been that long.

Slowbeef asks Diabetus if he still talks to Lowtax, Diabetus responds by saying that’s he’s never really socialized with Lowtax and the only interaction they’ve had together was on the Retsutalk podcast episode where Lowtax was a guest, years back.

Slowbeef and Diabetus talk about their first ever interaction with each other: in 2007 Diabetus sent Slowbeef an image of a map to help him find items in his Super Metroid LP.

Diabetus asks Slowbeef to remind him what it was that kicked off them making videos together. Slowbeef starts talking about Diabetus guesting on someone’s Zelda LP in 2007, but then Slowbeef goes off on a tangent about the main guy that made that Zelda LP, Lurkdog, saying that Lurkdog would be rich today if he’d kept it up. Slowbeef says that he was impressed with how funny Diabetus was in the Zelda LP and asked him to do videos with him.

Slowbeef starts talking about Lowtax again and the let's play subforum and how the subforum came to be. People in this thread probably already know, but Slowbeef was the first mod of the LP subforum.

Transcription:

Slowbeef: “Can I tell you one funny, like, awkward thing with Lowtax? Well, there’s a million, but, like, a let’s play related one, though?”

Diabetus: “Uh huh.”

Slowbeef: “On twitter he goes: ‘I remember when Slowbeef said to me we should have a forum for let’s play, I said ‘who would want to watch people play videogames?
So, that never happened. Like, he totally tweeted that once and I’m like ‘what the fuck is he talking about?’”

Diabetus: “I was about to say, like what..?”

Slowbeef:”Yeah, that didn’t happen at all! I kinda wanted to say something but I’m like ‘I’m gonna let that go’”

Diabetus: “Wasn’t the forum born because all the Games mods were like ‘we don’t want to deal with this shit, could you put it in its own forum, please.’ ”

Slowbeef: “Yeah. And [name of an old SA Games forum mod] is like ‘I fucking hate these people,’ basically.”

Diabetus: “Just put them in their own corner where no one will... They won’t bother the other Games folks.”

Slowbeef: “Right. I think what was great about it, too, was that, like, umm... They didn’t take stats on SA until, like, way more recently than they should’ve, y’know?
So like, nobody realized like, oh wow, Let’s Play had far – like really far-and-away – the highest ratio of, like, guest registered accounts.
Like, when they finally took stats, and it was like: ‘wait a minute, this is actually a really big draw for the site.’
And, y’know, I was like: ‘I thought it was, what do you mean you aren’t taking stats...’
Nobody had ever said anything about that, so I figured that... Like, I guess this isn’t... Like, whatever... ”

Diabetus: “That Dangan Ronpa thread alone probably lead to who knows how many new accounts.”

Slowbeef: “Dangan Ronpa... It’s funny – the mod’s forum, all the admins were like: ‘I fucking hate Dangan Ronpa, let’s get rid of this fucking thing.’ And I’m just like: ‘no, people like it, it’s a headache but it’s my headache, I’ll handle it, don’t worry,’ y’know? And all this shit.”

Diabetus: “Right.”

Slowbeef: “And then.. Fucking, umm... I think Lowtax knew Dangan Ronpa was a huge thing, because someone bought, like, a big spoiler banner and he removed that. For the record, they didn’t do that for Game of Thrones when somebody did that!
But fucking Dangan Ronpa got that ‘oh, don’t fuck with the cash cow!’ treatment. I’m just saying. I don’t know that for sure, to be honest, but I was like ‘yeah, someone knows’ y’know? Somebody’s aware that Dangan Ronpa is bringing in the gravy.”

Later in the stream: Slowbeef talks about taking his kids to conventions in the future. He also jokes(?) about not wanting his kids to watch Youtubers because “they’re all Nazis, these days.”
He talks about worrying about his kids seeing weird content on the internet.

Two unfunny twats crash the stream towards the end, I can't bear to listen to thsoe retards though so I can't transcribe it.

Slowbeef's wife seems decent, from what I remember of the videos with her. I wonder if she went off the deep end with him.

Shiddykat is pretty funny and is probably the only reason to watch any of Slowbeef's videos. She'll whine about Trump and current events on her twitter every now and then but otherwise she's fairly innocuous.

If you have a spare 2 hours, I'd actually suggest watching her playthrough of Undertale. She has basically no experience with video games so almost all of the subtext and humor flies completely over her head, so it's fascinating to watch from that kind of perspective. Eventually she grows so impatient with the game she just starts relentlessly shitting on it, and then starts apologizing to the viewers for hating it so much when she leans that the game is popular. It's funny as hell:

Slowbeef: “On twitter he goes: ‘I remember when Slowbeef said to me we should have a forum for let’s play, I said ‘who would want to watch people play videogames?

This is 100% accurate and exactly how it happened. Games forum moderator (was it Axemaniac? I can't remember) fucking hated LPs and petitioned for a subforum to move all of that shit into, because it was clear people really liked them and they weren't going to go away.

If Lowtax is rewriting history, welp, wouldn't be the first time.

TBF There was a lot of Let's Plays/Vote on how we play the game shit that was clogging up the first page of the games forum made it hard to find threads talking about games and not just people doing weird roleplaying screenshot updates.

Since it was a good & sane decision, its doubtful Low-t had any hand in it.

Oh, it was definitely a good decision, but it wasn't made for the right reasons. It was made because some moderator had a hardon about LPs and wanted them to go away. Your reasoning is correct, and I agree that LP needed its own subforum, but the decision was ultimately made due to spite, not logic.

Diabetus always seemed like the sane one, glad to see that hasn't changed.

I lol how slowbeef is extremely full of himself.

“Yeah if I made a big investment and put in time I could do this full time as a job”. Making major assumptions he would be successful, people would pay enough to watch him and that he doesn’t come off as uncharismatic and unfunny.

It’s very creepy he involves his kids in this and wants to take them to cons. What a great parent.

Here's the simple fact of the matter. To make an living doing LPs, you're going to have to put in AT LEAST as much time as you would at a normal job. You also don't get any of the benefits of a normal job (insurance, retirement, the ability to turn it off at the end of the day). You also have to deal with every asshole who gives you $5 on Patreon thinking you owe them something. A thing that used to be fun (making LPs) will cease to be fun as soon as it becomes work. And on top of all that, every month is a WONDERFUL MYSTERY about whether your videos will be popular enough to allow you to pay your mortgage.

I cannot think of a worse way to make a living. People get jealous of PDP and TotalBiscuit and stuff, but Christ almighty, they can fucking have it. I'd literally rather clean toilets.

Very few people reach PDP level of success and fuck you money today. Also, all it takes is one “problematic” joke for the moral crusaders to come down on your ass and it can literally be anything that offends them. Would you want to take that risk when it may prevent you from having food on the table and a roof over your head? What do you do in a few years when people move on and you’ve been out of work without any meaningful experience?

The days of creating new superstar streamers is long gone. You had to be there from day 1 at this point. There are way too many people trying to break into it and they all suck. You’ll just be white noise unless magically you do something that goes viral which is rare as fuck. Slowbeef’s only positive is he’s somewhat widely known but again he is incredibly boring and unfunny on stream without diabetus. It’s very egotistical of him to assume he’d be automatically successful at streaming.

I'd add you can make it by being some kind of multiplayer savant also. Beef's too old for that now.

Just to add to what others have said, there's also the whole demonetization thing that's been happening on Youtube with even innocuous content makers like Lazy Game Reviews getting hit.

And the amount of ad-revenue money for a really successful video that gets a million views is about $1000USD (and there isn't a single video on the Retsupurae channel that has a million views, despite some of them being a decade old). So you'd have to regularly put out very successful content to earn a living, and supplement that with Patreon and twitch donations.

Beef got caught up in shitting on DSP and mocking him that the thought arose in his head "If a fuck up like Phil can make bank being shit at this thing, I, slowbeef, can be a better streamers than him. And do it while holding a regular job!" Again, just thinking with your Id.
I can believe this. I can also see Beef thinking his audience is way bigger than it really is, given the volume of stuff that they put out on social media.

Problem is he tends to play stuff like shumps that no one wants to watch every day.

Something people may be sort of aware of is that slowbeef used to have a website, before he stopped paying for hosting or something and now it's only accessible in the Wayback Machine. Which fine, everyone wanted to have a website, and it was where he posted game reviews and such.

Something I definitely didn't know about is that that site had a forum, which obviously was nuked, and which the Wayback Machine sort of has, but no threads can be seen. Still, it was spam galore before it died ignobly.

My whole point bringing up this subject is that I can't fathom why slowbeef would even want a forum to discuss himself that much.

[unrelated, @proteus4994 , why did you start helping out with retsupuraes back then?]

I remember slowbeef's webpage (he hosted his first LPs there in the very very early days before Waffleimages existed), although I had no idea he had forums.

As for why did I help out? I was asked. At some point slowbeef had the idea of shitting on really bad Youtube LPs and I said "hey, that sounds pretty fun" since that's more or less what I did already to SA LPs in the Sandcastle.

Most of the time people would just ask me to be in their videos and I said yes because why not? It didn't happen that often because I had a reputation of being an asshole and most people thought I'd just shit on them for 30 minutes straight (and they were probably right), but when it did I almost always said yes. I think the only LP where I actually took the reins and actively asked to participate in was Super Metroid Redesign, because I could tell from the beginning that it was going to be a really fun trainwreck.
