You don't know if he did or didn't go insane at any point unless you really spoke to him. When people freak out and go crazy, it's for a few moments or maybe a half hour at most, but then what? They go back to being depressed, sad, but otherwise normal (as normal as Chris can possibly be at least).

He's behind bars, he can freak out and go crazy all he wants, it's not like it will make any difference. If he's annoying the guards they'll tell him to shut the fuck up, and he will.

I'm sure he's had some moments of complete despair where he freaked out and went a little crazy, but it takes a lot of energy to have a freak out. How many times do you think Chris is gonna do something that takes a lot of energy, especially once he sees how no one cares and it does him absolutely zero good?

Chris is stupid, but he's also lazy and I don't think he's mentally impaired enough to live like a true yelling, screaming, spitting, and kicking insane person 24/7.

Why oh why does this unfounded story persist?

One of the few post-arrest photos of Chris's house showed it looking somewhat empty and in this era of limited content people have to take what they can get. It's also a very poetic ending for Chris's time at 14 Branchland CT. He spent years blowing his tugboat on children's toys and video games and now it all has ended up in a garbage dump. Its what should be the logical ending of Chris's past 40 years of sloth and ignorance that all the worthless junk he blew his money on ends up in the trash. It might be more of wishful thinking than facts about Chris's current state.

My money's on him being actually diagnosed with Schizotypal Personality Disorder and being given Seroquel or Risperidal. Sanity in exchange for being an Evanescence fan. He's finally gotten the help he needed, 40 years too late. Doesn't mean he's insane, just that he has moments of illucidity, he'll definitely be held sane at trial. I think that being dosed has finally made those coping mechanisms go away and so he's hit the wall, realising how fucked he is and everything he did was, at least in consequences.
