I'm pretty sure the plan was always a reboot. As far as I remember, and I guess some more info could have came out in the past few years, but all anyone had to go on was that Ed Boon said in an interview they were scrapping everything and starting over, although this was directly related to questions about how the gameplay style would be for Mortal Kombat 8. He also stated that he wanted it to be even grittier and darker, based on him seeing video of the then new Gears of War at the time.

The only other info was some pre production art that came out.

This, of course, all fell apart when Midway was going broke and decided their hail mary was to make a crossover with DC to try and save the company.

The designs seem very akin to MK 1 so I suppose that reboot was always the destination. It just feels weird that was the case when it seemed Armaggedon was setting something up. Kahn suddenly winning just makes you wonder if Taven and his conquest are even canon at this point.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I unironically like a lot of the 3D era characters. I mean, Taven sucks, I liked bringing in characters from other realms and shit. Hell, I would say Shujinko has great potential as a villain with his whole "false chosen one" arc. But because so many people who like video games are addicted to nostalgia, anything that is not magically both new and old at the same time gets ignored. Not that there aren't shitty characters in the newer games (Kobra, Darrius, Taven) but there are a lot who are pretty neat.
I played as Hotaru alot for Deception. Cool character design, and fatalities. I liked how he was a law & order/Judge Dredd type character.

Hotaru had potential as a good, true neutral character, but because everyone Bawww'ed about how the 3D games were different, he'll probably never appear again.

Most characters of the 3D era are canonically dead, seriously, the comics set between 9 and X were all about killing most of the PS2 cast so they would have an excuse to never appear.

Some still appear but as NPCs, clearly their presence being more like a cameo than an straight up appearance. Others appear ocassionally in some endings as cameos too.

The new timeline is mostly focusing on a new cast of characters post MK 9 with the ocassional returning character.

it's really weird that they rebooted the series twice now without being that far apart

That moment when you realise that they killed Hanzo (human scorpion) just so we can return to the old specter Scorpion, thus removing any sort of character development.

And it was a fucking newbie bug character the writers probably have a fetish for, thus allowing her to kill 3 veterans fan favorites.

I like D'vorah. She's a good creepy character that fits the world. I do think her killing old scorpion was a weird choice, but killing Hanzo just reinforces what I've said before. Fighting games are often allergic to change, outside of a mechanical level. They were so worried people would be buttmad about not having spicy scorpion, they made sure he was the default in the end.

MK11 was literally 'oopsie better not talk about the PS2 games'. We had Dark Raiden for all of 10 minutes before he got retconned too.

I'm not one to spill the beans, but what the hell, I'm under a fake name and an isolated email anyway.

MK12 is coming. Not sure how soon, but it's coming.

That's all.

I'm ready for the trashcans, but I unironically miss Kreate a Fighter. Granted, I'm on record saying CaC should be in everything, but Kreate a Fighter was something special. The fact that Ed and the boys made the dip-shit decision to pair it with Kreate a Fatality, which was a garbage system for inbreds is an unfair albatross around it's neck. The world of MK is too big to not have something like that, especially if Boon is too chicken shit to let us play cool demons and monsters, unless they have tits.

Just slap a Kytin skin, a Tarkatan skin, and a Shokan skin on and alongside a basic human model, and let us go nuts, maybe with a few extra moves for the appropriate races. As for fatalities, just make 15-20 generic ones, slap them on a list, and let us pick two. Bonus, you can even flog more generic fatalities for money.

No shit? I totally thought that Mortal Kombat was fucking dead as Dillinger.
Didn't the last one make a bunch of money? They're not going to stop just because evo or /v/ complain.

I hope the roster is Scorpion, 50 people from 80s movies, and an alt Scorpion with a blue costume (Sub-Zero will be released as DLC two years later)

I hope they give Jax another ending with him stopping slavery. That was great (((WB))).

i am just so fucking confused by that one
especially when the ending his daughter has is purely just for him and tragic as fuck
It's not confusing when you see the producers around that game. Having spergouts on Twitter with anyone complaining about the game. They've covered up all the women, added a slavery ending for reasons, and gave Shao Kahn a fucking Trump one liner.

I'm pretty much done with that series when they're so hyper focused on guest characters that it's not even MK anymore. Plus, MK11 was WAY too fucking grindy to unlock stuff. I only buy these things when the DLC is done and I can get it all for $20.

You just wait for the shit they're putting in 12.

Imagine, hypothetically, if they added, hypothetically, a subtle Covid metaphor.

That honestly would be pretty tame for what I'd expect.

A lot of people shit on the PS2 trilogy, but I for one liked them and I rank Deception up there in the top 3. I wish they would put those on networks upscaled.
