Getting off the drink or drugs isn’t going to make a guy who is a cunt to the bone a better person. It’s like some of you guys think the drugs and drink made him the asshole he is. That's the logic of saying everyone who drinks and does drugs is a little bit more of an asshole than when they aren't on them - WTF? So untrue. It just brings to the surface what a monster he is deep down and takes the lid off it.

If he were to get clean all he would do is weaponize it and go after everyone he knows who ever touched a drug and call them inferior and not up to his “new standards” and “beneath him”. Because he is a CUNT. He isn't going to fix anything, least of all himself.

Another video - much like Nick's - where he tells you how he is or sorry for the consequences of his actions and those that he hurt, and yet will not own up to a single actual act or tell you the things he actually did that were terrible. Like seeking out young women fucking them, and getting them pregnant setting their paths and those of the children on paths more difficult or those of their families. Or the constant ruining of people's reputation, slander and lies and harassment. He oozes conflict and pain sober or drunk. It is who he is and we might as well blame the sandwiches he consumes along with the drugs and alcohol.

He he were off to a weight loss clinic would you roll out the carpet because that addiction too is killing him, but I'll tell you what if he stopped eating like a pig that wouldn't make him less of a cunt either.

This guy isn't worth the snot on your handkerchiefs. All that is left in Ralphs life are more victims, including himself. The best outcome for anyone sadly involved with this guy is to read an obituary.

Ralph's not sincere about this because he's been making a big show about it. He very easily could've disappeared off the earth for a few weeks while he did this. We would've speculated, he'd come back, then he could say he went to rehab. This is some Bojack Horseman shit. I guarantee Ralph's in so much chronic pain he needs opioids to function. Not only does Ralph do drugs recreationally but he also said he needed Ambien to sleep. $900 Rehab isn't going to fix that. It might get him started by helping cutting the recreational use but there's so much work he's gonna have to put in himself. 1 bad day and he's back on drugs and it seems very easy for him to have that one bad day.

At the same time as that - if people are really "powerless" against alcohol then relying on a sponsor or support system in the first place (I feel) somewhat bypasses the person developing their own systems of accountability and self-sufficiency. For sure it helps to have people around you for support but some journeys don't need passengers.

I mean its still important to remember the historical context of AA and that is that it is like 100 years old and was started with a pretty clear mandate that they kept to very well about non-promotion and not getting involved in politics or commenting on shit outside of their mandate. That's a quality as well as a flaw because it means its never been fucked around by "modern politics" but also means there's no real modern scientific basis in how it works - to put into context how old it is, AA almost predates the invention of Penicillin and mankind has learned a fucking awful lot about the brain and psychology in that timeframe.

Historically its still a pretty important organization/concept because it probably helped many people realize that alcoholism is a serious problem to begin with... my only issue is that when I see people mention parts of the 12 step program in relation to this thread or other modern things I think the approach is super outdated. It's probably still a useful stepping stone to some people who have severe self-control and personal problems but I think that's about it.

The shit is a very old system and I wrote most of that just so that people who might be reading this thread and struggling with this kind of stuff (or know someone who does) realize that AA isn't the be all and end all of things. I know at least a few people personally including one who was a total alcoholic who have changed their ways without AA being a part of it at all - I know the people who mention it or the steps involved with it probably come from a good place (even if they're shit talking the ralphamale) but people will hopefully start to see over time that there are better, newer ways to deal with alcoholism (and as you mention - taking personal responsibility and accountability is not only important and not really a part of AA but can go a long way in helping people in other parts of their lives.

If people want to improve themselves and stop drinking then they should do it, and if they want to be cognisant of the damage they've caused while they were an alcoholic they should either be doing that automatically because of self-awareness or because their friends/people tell them "hey you're a fucking dick when you're drunk" - not because its the magical "5th step" in some 100 year old program.

edit: Probably more important than the rehab place itself or any program they give Ralph will be when he leaves and making sure that he changes his habits/environment and does something productive with his time.

I'm just glad you got sober. Meetings helped me to learn a different way of life, while the physical dependence was tapered through drugs and counseling, and I have a ton of friends because of them. My problem wasn't not drinking. It was stopping once I started. In fact, my problems had very little do do with alcohol, at all. Only one of the twelve steps even mentions alcohol. Bingeing was just the way my obsession manifested. Some people shop way too much, or get another piercing, or eat to the point that they can't move, or have lots of non meaningful sex with random partners. But I think it all stems from the same place. Learning how to cope with trauma and depend on God is what gets me through my life, today, and I'm grateful to AA for that. It is part of the whole of my daily routine and continued sobriety. As for my life revolving around recovery, it kind of does. I feel like crap if I don't go to church on Sunday, or a meeting three times a week. But it's better than being dead, which is very much where I was headed. It was just a slower suicide method than most. I'm grateful for the people that can just stop drinking and never look back, to the ones that pull themselves up and are granted the grace of that obsession being lifted without having to turn to a Higher Power. I am not that person. I wouldn't wish addiction issues on my greatest enemy, and Ralph certainly isn't that.

While it's optimistic as hell to think Ralph would actually follow through I think he genuinely wants to get better*. He sounded on the verge of tears through the 2nd half of that speech to the point of if it was anyone other than Ralph I would actually feel bad for them.

Unfortunately for Ralph, it's clear to anyone paying attention he's only wants to get better as a "See I can do better!" move to try and get Faith/Amanda/Any of his other burnt bridges to come back. So even if he does get better, once he realizes they're still not coming back he'll most likely fall back into his old ways.

*Until he actually has to put in effort and realizes it'll be easier to just give up and relapse.

You will admit to every Xanax you take. Every Ambien. Every Drink. Everything. Until you stop taking them entirely, resetting your clock every time you take one.

You are always one choice from going back to zero. And you'll go back to zero many times.

You'll be told you can't do it, you'll fuck up and if you ever considered yourself a man, you will admit to your failing every time and reset the clock.

Until you don't have to reset the clock anymore.
