Pokémon (Not-So) Griefing Thread - Scarlet and Violet Released with 10 Million Copies in First 3 Days in Buggy States

Oh God, Takeshi Shudo. He was truly crazy, and if he hadn’t died he’d probably have a lolcow thread.
Yeah he most likely would, but he was a crazy sunovabitch who made Pokémon and Minky Momo memorable, and Mewtwo is as popular and remembered as he is because of how dark and depressing the character was for the series. Dude just had it rough which ended up killing him, but honestly, I'm still glad he wrote what he wrote. Our childhoods being secretly fueled by alcohol and crazy pills doesn't sound too out of place for the timeperiod.

Better than Flash and Whirlpool.

At least the Dive sections were cool, and Rock Climb could confuse [for some reason].
Yeah whirlpool was a discount surf in terms of combat effectiveness.
Flash didn't do much and was Temporary inside of caves if I remember so no one used it. As it would slowly fade over time.

Surprised no one mentions the secret doubles partner lost in the cave under the bicycle road.

wait you had to use flash, cut, and have rock smash for that. So no one bothered to backtrack down under the bicycle road.

Dive was great with the underwater sections and thought that was pretty wierd there was a 1-5% chance Rock climb could confuse a target. I think I only got that once and it was patched out of Platinum and HG/SS.

Funnily enough, Defog is a regularly used move in competitive to get rid of field hazards like (Toxic) Spikes and Stealth Rock. Serves as a good alternative to Rapid Spin since it's available to more Pokémon.

To be fair, Defog only worked on your opponent's side of the field(So while it deletes any Screens your opponent has it also got rid of all of the hazards you set up) until Gen VI when it was buffed to work on both sides. And until Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the best users had to be taught the Defog HM in a Sinnoh game, traded to a Johto game to transfer to Gen V because you have to delete any HM moves found within the transmitting game to send to Gen V (So Whirlpool could be transferred in DPP and Defog could be transferred in HGSS). Within Gen IV and V the move was useless, so it pretty much meant that after XY when Bank came out, people would have to go back to Gen IV and train usable Defog Pokemon, and need a second DS/3DS for both trading to HGSS and transferring to Gen V.

Rock Climb still confuses, or rather it would if it were in Gen 8.

Alola's challenges were more based off Hawaii and Hawaiian culture.

The Orange Islands and most of the island arcs of that era, were more like Okinawa and the other various islands and territories near Japanese Waters. Since Kanto is the name of an actual Prefecture in Japan.

We did eventually get straight surfing time races in Gen 7 but they were pretty dogshit, time consuming as in 5-10+ minute long sequences and it was just far easier to use fly to get from place to place. I missed having to have a party pokemon know an HM to get around.
The pocket machamp and taurus made no sense.

At least Omega latios and latias made sense having a homing beacon for them to pick you up with. Like bitch, you're telling me I can ONLY use 6 pokemon at once, but I have at least 10 of these mothafuckas in my bag just waiting to do various HM shit, one per move with accompanying tard tier safety equipment that ORAS didn't have.
The premise of pokeride was supposed to be that these were, like, services you could call in from the PC network, like the Corvinight taxi in SwSh. Of course, the game kinda broke that a few times (stating that the numbers they were giving you belonged to super specific Pokemon, like Hapu's Mudsdale, not to mention summoning them to get through some of the Ultra Worlds.

With that said, I like that they opened up teambuilding options by removing HMs.

Until gen six Defog only removed hazards on the opponent's side of the field on top of lowering evasion.

Also just learned that it actually did that. Despite being less useful than a fart in Gen 4 PVE, as trainers and wild pokemon either never use those moves or the lightscreen is so ineffective at mitigating damage that its useless against whatever Im using. It did improve drastically in future titles apparently.
Yep. Reflect and light screen now half physical and special attacks' damage respectively.

I remember someone discussing the sluggish nature of the video games' combat and how they lack any streamlined features and generally seem pretty old. Looking at the games, I think the combat system programming is the biggest hindrance for me in terms of enjoying the games anymore.

To me I think the overall slowness of attacks and the way the game tells the player impacts of attacks and status effects is super clunky. Feels like a lot of that could be condensed.

How would you suggest fixing/streamlining/modernizing the combat in Pokemon games?

Adapt newer ideas from other RPGs, look at Bravely Default 2 combat you can change the battle speed to suit your pace in gameplay.
The Bravely Default series should not be a model for anything. BD1 let you speed the game up so you could skip a shitty game.

On a more serious note, I don't know how I feel about speeding up jrpg combat in that fashion. To some degree, I like it and it makes sense to help with level grinding if that's a thing you want to do. However part of me thinks speeding the game up suggests that the game itself is not engaging or designed well enough in the first place; otherwise why would you need to speed things up to skip through them?

I like your suggestion though. Streamlining the game's notifications would go a long way in achieving that goal as well.

Literally just combine some of the messages (fucking Stadium did this) and add a way to skip animations during multiplayer. Maybe a turbo button as well.

Stadium was built by Nintendo, correct?

Maybe GF needs to let Nintendo have more of a role in the development phase.
Yeah but, as it was stated before, it's not a fair comparison with the mainline because that game was purely focused on the combat and didn't need to worry about having a story or visuals outside of the battles.

Given how big of a roster that pokemon has now, doing a visual overhaul to the scale stadium or colosseum is too monumental of a task regardless of the developers.

But I thought GF had high resolution models of all the Pokemon already complete.

The only reasons I remember Dive are that it was a HM move that wasn’t complete shit, and it combo’d well with Surf for Pokémon Contests - hell, it’s how I got my Milotic back in Emerald.

Something like how the Final Fantasy 7 Remake pulled it off would be interesting. A mashup of real time and turn based so it's not just mindless grinding. I get the feeling that's where the open world Arceus game is heading.

looks like an indirect sequel to Pokemon conquest to me so far.
They did apparently try to do a "Nobunga's ambition arc" during gen 5 that no one bought.
