One of the main reasons why this is such a big issue is because people across the Sahel still practice bride price next to polygamy. This basically means you have to pay for the woman to marry her. Inequality naturally makes this worse, as rich people are able to afford multiple wives while poor men are left with no woman. Historically, this wasn't a huge problem, as you had wars regularly and slavery to control the male population. Now we have slavery abolished and millions of free men who live in poverty and are unmarried. This surplus of men with nothing to fear or lose will naturally join any militant group in hopes of a better life, resulting in civil wars that last decades.

Polyamory is generally when someone is able to sustain multiple simultaneous relationships at the same time (ex - a girl with two boyfriends, or a husband and a boyfriend) whereas Ethical Non-Monogamy is generally a relationship where there is a core relationship but the people in it are allowed to have sex with other partners.
