Plagued /r/TNOmod and the Reddit HOI4 modding community - When a subreddit for a video game mod turns to utter insanity

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I wish I remember the forum where Panzer basically stole the TNO setting from. Remember it being linked in 4chan, and the forum thread basically confirmed that most of the TNO setting had already been created by others as a Nazi RP thing. For a aspiring writer PinkPanzer has constantly relied on other people to write for him
Iirc it was Facepunch, it was mentioned in previous posts.

Yes I recall that too. I would have included it if I had the sources, but welcome to fringe politics/game development, everything gets nuked eventually.

I predict it will continue to devolve and spread lolcows now that a troon has replaced Polish Hitler/Vaush groupie as supreme leader. The fact that near weekly announcements on the Reddit fail to amend any of the community's absolutely autistic behavior speaks truth to this.
What do you know about Pacifica? I'd love to know more, just assumed they were bad news because they were chosen by Pinkpanzer. Also, have you see this interview Panzer did for website that's either far-left CCP apologists and massively anti-West. Or just flat out propaganda for them. Either way they go over how in the 70s the TNO canon story will be that the 3rd Reich will collapse, America will come out on top and the mod will transition to American political commentary. Which there are already examples of what that's a bad idea and they can't do it justice in this thread. And according to Panzer themselves about their involvement; they will still retain creative control and final say on the mod's content. The lulz are just beginning, there will be content to sustain this thread for quite some time.

Remember when they kicked a Japanese developer out of the team because he wasn't being 100% anti-Japan?

Yeah it comes from Facepunch.

So I was checking out the subreddit and found out that not only is Lysenko in the mod, he's a fucking cartoon-like mad scientist who is trying to create super soldiers through torture. Which has to be the stupidest "alt-history" shit I have ever heard.
He's a "trap path" (a path that seems like it will do one thing, but just fucks you over and gives you something else), his plans all fail and he gets destroyed by the Ural league.

Comparatively little other than the fact they're more communistic than neo-liberal and a troon. The Minecraft streams with him and Panzer have him using an obviously hammed up fake feminine voice.

The sub had an EXTREMELY anti German, edging on pro German genocide slant before Panzer banned that to his credit. You legit had tankies and anarchists romanticizing about how they'd purge Germans from the Baltic and East Germany when the mod came out, this was around 2019. I really do think there's more potential than people think to documenting and mocking this entire community.

Slightly off topic, but from what I've seen, EaW is probably the most fleshed out HoI4 mod.

Every nation has a tree and it has a lot of in jokes and memes from other mods.

Though, I will say, I don't like Huey Long's historical villain upgrade in Kaiserreich. Even by today's standards he was very progressive.

Game devs see vaguely right wing people like something, reflexive action is to make it bad.

It is unironically an extremely high quality mod with loads of content. But I do think TNO is the higher quality mod, just because it has much higher prose in its writing and much more of it. However TNO kind of creates a niche for itself as a far more narrative driven experience. While EAW creates a niche because it's MLP. But it is probably my guess for 2nd highest quality mod on the workshop. Even if people don't like to admit that.

Lysenko was absolutely batshit insane though and was probably the closest thing to an IRL "mad scientist," I'd argue that while it's unrealistic that Lysenko would have the opportunity to try his super-soldier autism, from what I remember it does follow his "theories." He thought putting wheat seeds in a freezer made them grow better in cold climates because stimulus to ancestor populations led to adaptions in their descendants. It was Lysenkoism that led to massive stagnation in Soviet agriculture post-Holodomor and even slowed down Soviet biological research because under him the theory of evolution was labeled fascist propaganda.

You're right about the community being worth documenting, it's just that nobody really wants to take the deep dive in. And on their Reddit the autism is same old same old. Even from the mods since it's a usually "stop being a shitty community" A little while ago it was "stop editing Wikipedia to include references to TNO in the trivia section of historical figures" A few days ago it was "Stop going to Youtube videos that include historical content used in TNO and posting TNO memes." Their Discord has some decent content though, somebody stating that Hunnig looking good would go against the mod's message of Nazism being evil.

Something else that was very interesting I found was that Panzer (ahedgeknight on Reddit) gave an interview for website. One that apparently pushes real realism and race theory shit. As well as dubiously fact-checked reactionary content. The Reddit thread (Archive) linking to it was made by Panzer. Panzer claimed they had no idea what the website stood for, just happy about the attention. So as it was with the their interview for the Canadian Files, they just like the attention and put little thought into the fact they and their mod are used as pawns to push narratives. I'll admit I think this is pretty fucking funny, Since I had actually mentioned to a discord mod who then warned Panzer about giving interviews to ideology motivated sites the day that interview was posted.

The Interview (Archive) itself starts with a rundown of Panzer's (Jakob Zaborowski) life. It mentions that he's 23, no longer head dev, currently installs robots in hospitals and consults for video game companies, But it also notes he went homeless twice during TNO and that he has multiple doxes on the internent to be found from various points in his life during development. It's not much of an interview past that point though. It's almost exclusively an extensive summary of the mod's basic story, premise, and possible options for major nations. As well as basic background on HOI and modding. It's clearly intended to ease in and be read by an audience that doesn't play video games.

The few things Panzer himself says are that the mod's primary motivation is to oppose wehraboos. That he sees Nazism as a flawed system that would have no long term future if the Nazis had won. But that the mod challenges a simple "good versus evil dynamic" with its content. That in fact the mod is designed to subvert the expectations of people who go into it saying "I'll pick a democratic good guy and fix everything." Panzer also notes he believes good endings must be earned in games like TNO. The interview caps off by contrasting TNO to figures like Extra Credits who oppose depictions of Fascism in video games. Far more subtle at pushing its narrative than the Chinamen at the Canadafiles are. But a far lesser interview.

Did he really say that? Really makes me think, considering that one of the hardest endings to get in the mod is playing Albert Speer through a reformist Nazi path that by the end makes Germany look really similar to the CCP.

According to the devs that is the only ending where they are not doomed to slowly fall apart if they refuse to become a Democracy.
