This is going to ramble and go a bit

fftopic:. You've been warned.
I think that Chris's ever-deepening plummet into the arena of the unwell isn't necessarily a sign of worsening mental conditions. Consider the stuff that he's put up with the past few years - Bob's death, the fire at 14 BC, Sorbet's worsening condition, his being jailed...and of course, Snorlax moving inexorably closer to a sooner-rather-than-later demise. And I think that he has become more aware of what an unkind and unfriendly place the World can be.
Now, faced with such a situation, there are basically two routes one can take - with various shades of grey between, of course - but what it boils down to are these. One can either swallow hard and face reality, or one can retreat further into the safe space of one's fantasy.
Chris could still better himself in the real World. Try to save some money, even if it's only 20 dollars a month or whatever, and not touch any of it unless he genuinely
needs to. Get some more exercise, which can be as simple as going for a walk each day. Maybe try for further education. Take steps towards getting a job even if it's only a part-time/voluntary one. Talk with Barb about her concerns and worries for him while there's still time - maybe even get some half-decent life advice from her.
But that takes effort, however minimal. And some of it can
hurt emotionally to force oneself to face, which can be as painful as any material matter. Worrying how to pay for the house will be bad, but worrying about how one will cope in a World with no family and no real friends can be just as crushing.
However, CWCville and its denizens, not to mention their portals into Equestria and wherever this video-game faggotry takes place, will be there for as long as Chris is. They're not growing old, they're not getting sick, they're not dying - and they never have to worry about money. The imaginary friends who've become more important to Chris in many ways than real life.
Chris isn't getting mentally more ill, but he is less and less willing to face the real World when he can just have Magi-Chan teleport over and psychically examine his Dreamcast, and end up with a goddess living inside him and wearing Discord as a vest. His fantasies have ceased to be healthy and become a security blanket that he's too afraid to give up.
And in that regard, he is most definitely getting
worse.
