Yeah, that's a thing. It's such a big thing, even if your style has a single thing in common with anime, your teachers and more snob peers will start looking down on you.
With this in mind, their style sorta make sense. Small eyes with big nose and giant mouth? Sounds like the anti-anime, if I do say so myself.
This is true. The art school I'm in is very anti-anime, though it pushes students towards contemporary abstraction instead of Calarts puke. Even students who draw a diverse amount of things are still shoved into the little box of the art school ideals.
Art schools despise thinking outside of the box. You make art like the school or you get ridiculed by your teachers and peers.
