This is true. The art school I'm in is very anti-anime, though it pushes students towards contemporary abstraction instead of Calarts puke. Even students who draw a diverse amount of things are still shoved into the little box of the art school ideals.

Art schools despise thinking outside of the box. You make art like the school or you get ridiculed by your teachers and peers.

Honestly, it seems like she's trying so hard to have a unique "style" that she's prioritized that over having art that actually looks good. Yeah, everyone recognizes rory art as rory art, and no one would call it generic, but she's missing the part where that's not always a good thing.

Another decent reason why I kinda just gave up on my art college dream honestly. Like you either to EXACTLY what they say or its literally shit in their eyes. It hardly lets people branch off with their creativity and all that good shit.

It's even worse when you realize what a farce it all is. I remember when I was a class at a regular University, we got the writer/head animator for Oliver and Company in for questions and lecturing. As a bunch of poorfucks who couldn't afford art school we had a lot of people asking 'is that going to be a deterrent on my job applications?' and he pretty much replied saying that the companies tend to look at your portfolio before they look at anything else, much less what school you went to. Calarts just gets a lot of animation students who go into Disney because Disney quite literally STARTED Calarts and has job expos far more often with them than anyone else.

So, I guess to loop back to the topic, that's going to be Rory's real problem. Spending a ton of mommy and daddy's money on Calarts is not going to pay off for her in the end because I can't imagine her portfolio will be anything short of a disgrace. Any animation company that takes a look at it is immediately going to throw it in the garbage, no matter HOW often they come to the school to do job expos.

I rated you ''disagree'' because if I had to guess, CalArts should be a last place to diss ''anime style'', because it's first and foremost animation college and then art school. I figure it's one of the most open minded schools there's out there.

Like @Rayemond46 pondered earlier, CalArts is not destroying her per se, but her own ego inflated by online followers is whats causing these abominations. Same shit happened with Dobson and handful of similar artist, and all of them they just double down on the issuse. It simple matter of egotism and doubling down in her mind that this is the right way to do ''art''.

I'm not kind of person that has issue with styles because I'm artist myself, but holy fuck, I can say for sure CalArts is not to blame for this one. It's just Rory trying tooooooo fucking hard to prove herself, to academy and online following.

Fair enough, thanks for the explanation then. I suppose I was trying to put a bit more optimistic spin on the cause but I definitely won't deny that Rory's biggest issue is her disproportionate ego. She clearly thinks she shits rainbows and pisses sunshine. It's just that I doubt her atmosphere is helping because the reputation of Calarts being THE art school of art schools probably is inflating her ego even more than it already was despite her basically buying her way in, and she showed a marked downfall in quality around the time she began attending if my math is right (a lot of her better stuff is from 2015, started downfalling around 2016, and she's been at Calarts for about a year and half to two years now).

It's not necessarily the fault of the school, rather that its the fault of a bad egg. She's Veruca Salt in the Chocolate Factory--it's a very good school (and I was not meaning to imply otherwise) but she's too self centered to think of anything but what fuels her ego. What SHE wants.

It's interesting, though, considering that her online followers egging her on is what caused this but now everyone's turning on her and yet she seems to be getting even worse. I guess she's probably reached the point of no return.

I had known about this artist a while ago.. Back when she did some SU art and it was pretty damn decent (this was before she started really drawing in her current "style") and I did enjoy her work. But now? Holy hell, what a fucking mess!

You know, an experienced artist should not be focusing on a style as it just comes naturally and is based upon what or who inspires them. This bitch is so hyper-focused on style that she's regressing and it's hilarious.

I have followed/kept up with many artists in my time on the internet and I'm OK with someone being egotistical if they actually are good but she is not good enough for it to be forgivable. Not to mention, how openly racist and transphobic she is through her work. She has no filter and continues to act like there's nothing wrong with the way she draws trannies or POC despite being called out on it literally every time she posts art online.

I'm loving the recent hate on her on Tumblr. It's like they all finally opened their eyes long enough to realize it isn't just her "style" but that she's drawing disgusting stereotypes. Why it took so long for them to see this, I have no idea. And even still, there are people actually defending her, somehow not aware of just how much of a shitty person she is.

I think it is quite telling of just how horrible she is if she doesn't even have friends in college. People in college are fucking Desperate to make friends.

Some pages back there were links to some of Rory’s CalArts assignments and they were compared to some of her classmates’ work. I recall the majority of her classmates produced much higher quality work, and Rory’s laziness practically radiated from her animations.

Earlier in the thread, someone posted a few of the short animations from her classmates...and they were a lot better than what Rory has been shitting out.
