Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

I need help with PPSSPP. im soft locked from a game im playing beacuse the high FPS makes that part of the game impossible too clear. i read you need to change the ForceMaxEmulatedFPS in the ppsspp.ini. the problem is, i cant find the ForceMaxEmulatedFPS in the ppsspp.ini file. i ctrl-f and it dosent show up.

These specialized FPGA-Consoles are entirely for coomlectors.
I doubt that most people that buy it really use it beyond turning it on once and posting about it on social media.
Can confirm. Bought the SNES and Genesis ones at the height of the scamdemic, and only used them a couple times. I’ve since used my Steam Deck almost exclusively

i checked my PPSSPP folder and it doesn't have that entry in the ini file either. They might have gotten rid of that in the newer versions or someting, because I compared it to an older ini I found online on a github, and some other settings got renamed as well. For example, "FrameSkipUnthrottle = True" is now "UnthrottlingMode = CONTINUOUS"

But apparently "ForceMaxEmulatedFPS = 60" is in between that and "AnisotropyLevel = 4", so maybe just manually copy/paste that into the ini, save it, and then see what happens. Worst case scenario either PPSSPP will ignore the entry and maybe delete that entry at starup or it'll crash.

I suppose the questions here are,
1: What game are you trying to play? Is it a game that normally runs at 60, or one that runs at 30 but for some reason isn't capped? I'm thinking either a GoW, Assassins creed, or PSP 2i?
2:What's your hardware situation?
I'll assume you tried stuff like turning frameskip on (to 1, which will effectively halve the FPS while remaining fullspeed), or auto frameskip which will aid more if the game's got sections where it goes up to 60 and is otherwise 30 (some racing games, GT portable does this)?

For reference forcemaxfps/emulatedfps was removed from ppsspp circa 2019 (really, just moved where it was useful) . You can use an older version of ppsspp if you really need but frameskip is gonna probably do what you want. Set CPU speed (111mhz) will help otherwise.
Without more info that's really all I can offer for advice.

So now that PCSX2 is finally in 2.0 (took a long while!) how's it performing on lower end PCs?
It's effectively the same thing as the nightly versions so as long as you downloaded any of the nightly versions in the last couple of years, you have a general idea of how games run on your system. I can't say much for lower end PCs so you'd have to consult the wiki for examples of games as there are usually a handful per each game.

a game called Kurohyou 2 ashuras call. was japan only until recently got a fan patch.

got an Intel Core i7 10700K CPU and a GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card. frame skipping is on 1 and auto frameskip is on.

I'm guessing you're having the triad issue in chapter 5 where you have to outrun them.
Turn OFF frameskip, firstly, not needed for you.
When ingame, pause emulation>settings>System>"Change Emulated PSP's CPU Clock (unstable)" to 111mhz, or 222mhz, or, just fuck around with it a bit till you find something that works. It won't hurt to try. Lower will help more than higher for this application.
I'm hoping you're on a PPSSPP version newer than 2020, which would make sense if you don't have forcemax60fps, but possibility remains that you may be on one older than sept2021 when hrydgard added Kurohyou 2 to the baked-in forcemax60fps system. (Or, says he did, lol)
I tested using the savestate found here with the demo AND full game (translation included) on the most recent version of PPSSPP (1.17.1) and was able to get through without any issue at all using default settings. My emulation rig is similar enough to yours that it shouldn't be an issue, was mostly concerned if you were on a latitude or something. If clock speed adjustment doesn't work, there are two cheats in the second github link that increase movespeed (one for the demo, one for the full game, it works even on the patched iso), turn one on, speed past, turn it off, repeat when necessary.

Was at my moms house digging through the closet of my old room and found an old copy of resident evil 1 for Gamecube and I've been playing it on Wii and I'm in awe of how incredible this game looks for 2002. It's shockingly beautiful. This game looks fantastic even in 2024.

Graphics could've stopped advancing past gen 6 and I'd be satisfied tbh

After trying to like Dragon's Dogma 2 didn't work for me I pulled my PVM and consoles out of storage. I've been playing lots of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. It's a better game than Dragon's Dogma 2.

I had a similar reaction when I played Resident Evil 0 a few years ago. The gameplay is a bit jank but I remember thinking "damn, this still looks really good".

Once companies tried to bring realism to graphics, that's when everything went to shit.

I don't give two fucks about mocap facial tracing technology or whatever other new shit they like to hype up that makes the environment look like IRL landscapes. I play video games to ESCAPE all that shit.

Reject photorealism. Embrace retro realism.

I finally got around to digging out my USB type A to type Mini B cable and slightly broken DualShock 3. Even though the L2 button on it is a little janky I can confirm that by following the instructions here, under "Linux and Mac (experimental)," the pressure sensitive buttons work in PCSX2 2.0. This is mainly for that guy here who was concerned about Lilypad, I only just now found the stuff to test it.

The beauty of pre-rendered backgrounds and putting effort into framing and being able to max out the character polygons. It's the pinnacle of remakes because (although using better tech) the team firmly kept the original in their mind, and revered it. Although fully 3D backgrounds were the norm even then, they made a conscious decision to honor the past and took lessons learned to heart, building upon the original framework. At the same time sticking to the original design doc instead of pulling a Square Enix FF7 "remake" retard play, where everything is changed and the original atmosphere is no where to be found.
