Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

That's really close to 100%, you may as well push through just to say you did lol. But yeah, not all of it's fun. I quit it back in the day because of the mandatory Chuckster stage, that had to be improperly tested.
I might go back and finish it sometime soon.

oh and fuck the chuckster stage that was an absolute chore to get through.
I almost got the hang of it by talking to him at the right places but its still a bitch.

$500 aluminum version of the Analogue Pocket looks like the Game Boy’s final form (archive)

Poor Boys may avert their eyes now.

If you’re willing to put in a bit more time+effort+money, you could also go for a mini PC. Install Batocera to a flash drive (or if it comes with an SSD, you could install Linux to a flash drive then use that to install Batocera to the main drive) and FTP your games over, and you have a device that can breeze through at least N64/DS/PSP depending on what you get. You can also enable Kid Mode to block off settings.

Of course, that all defeats the purpose of a cheap plug-and-play device. I wish someone like Anbernic would just make “[popular emulation handheld] but as an HDMI stick”; people would eat it up! I tried to recreate that experience with one of those Windows PC sticks and flashing Lakka but I got mine used off eBay and it barely worked.
To add to it: I had an Acer Aspire One with LAKKA in it. It ran up to the PS1 and N64 without many hiccups, while most other Distros wouldn't even start. Netbook's best function: being an emulation box.
So, if you manage to snag an EEEPc and you're willing to sacrifice it, it's a good going that prevents it from becoming complete e-waste in my opinion.

How is the overall emulation scene now? To what generation of each major console are we at now in terms of good emulation? Last I checked the scene was starting to be able to reliably emulate Gamecube and PS3. Have the recent takedowns by Nintendo set things back?

A quick rundown:

Gamecube and Wii are basically perfect, and you can even use real controllers if you want. DS is easier and more streamlined than ever with the recent MelonDS DS (yes, there are two DS’s in the name) core in RetroArch. Wii U is in a good spot but anything that uses the GamePad will obviously be tedious to emulate. Switch is good overall but constantly evolving, though the takedowns slowed Yuzu progress; there are multiple forks in development and we still don’t know which one will reign supreme. Ryujinx has always been shit, don’t believe /v/‘s lies. Citra, the only major 3DS emulator, was collateral damage in the Yuzu takedown, but it lives on through multiple forks, the two most popular being Lime3DS and PabloMK7’s fork.

PS2 is supposedly not great but it’s been fine in my limited experience. Xbox is even worse off than PS2. PS3 was better than 360 for a while but now they’re about even; which is to say, both might be okay/good depending on the game. I haven’t heard much about Vita emulation, but it exists and is usable. PS4 is finally getting off the ground, with ShadPS4 being able to kinda sorta run Bloodborne as of a few days ago. PS5/Xbox One/Series will probably never ever be emulated due to a lack of both knowledge and interest. Finally, every system I didn’t mention is effectively perfect.

Yeah. PS2 is basically perfect for me too. Pretty much every game I've thrown at it works perfect with software rendering, and works well with minor issues when upscaled. The one exception being Ratchet Gladiator which chugs on certain scenes when there's a lot going on. (5600x and RX 6600)

For the PS3, I was playing it recently and would say it's way overrated if you just want to play games. It crashes a lot, there's minor graphical errors all over the place. Despite claims otherwise, I'd rate GT5 unplayable, and Captain Amerca as playable but far from good.

Dreamcast with ReDream is basically perfect and performant. I'm not sure why people insist Flycast is the default. Maybe it supports upscaling without a paywall?

Which brings me to GameCube (and Wii). It's ...interesting. Heard it's basically perfect, and it is. Way more performant than PS2 for the same games. Though the errors that do exist are really weird. I tried Luigi's Mansion and it has minor graphics issues like the hose for the vaccum flickering in and out during the intro. Enabling anti-aliasing breaks shadows in the same game.

In the fighting game scene, FlyCast Dojo is the emulator used for all the Naomi/Dreamcast fighters, and they tend to keep up with the updates on those to get them near 1:1, and from what I've experienced, the netplay is stable, even if you maximized the screen and keep the native resolution to 640x480.

Only thing i don't like about it is that you can't save multiple controller configurations. You can only change the port, which just changes 1p/2p/3p/4p side, and with online matches, it only recognizes the 1p settings.

It really is impressive how much Stenzek and the team managed to fix and change in just 4-5 years when beforehand this emulator was a buggy POS that could barely run anything and had a hyper-specific fix for literally every problem. There are still problems, but when it comes to plug-and-play, I'd say it's become just as hassle-free as Dolphin if not more (seriously the difference between setting up controllers for multiple players between the two is night and day, Dolphin blows asscheeks on this).

Implying that's a bad thing

At $220, I think it has its place catering to extremely autistic byuu types who want perfect FPGA emulation and haven't killed themselves yet. At $500 it's a flex for YouTubers.

The idea that you still need to buy a flash cart for an expensive fake Game Boy is fuckin' gay.

Oh no, we wouldn't want you pirating games from 30 years ago! Support the original developers by buying old cartridges from fat assholes who scooped them all up in garage sales a decade ago!

It is so goddamn easy, a literal retard could do it
They always says so untill they got the card in hand XD Don't know about 3DS but whenever i gotten one of those R4 cards and handed them to friends that claims it is retardedly stupid to fix, they suddenly get a stutter, and need to be somewhere else in an instant. Atleast one gave me a proper answer; "Firmware is a bitch to fix".

I have no problem calling out my own ineptitude towards modern emulation.
