Cool, now how bad is the input lag?

I say this because anytime these games get a graphical upgrade or new hardware, the sync/timing goes to shit (not to mention added bugs). See: DDR SuperNova and DDRX
I can't find documentation on it, but my guess is that it runs just like every current Konami arcade game, at least 60. They're Japanese so forget about significant "modern improvements" like 120 fps or by god descent music that doesn't just cater to gross weeaboos.

Still hoping that this game and Rythm Heaven get sequals on the Switch someday (or at the very least an HD port).
Rhythm Heaven Megamix on the 3DS technically was an HD collection of the previous games. The bottom screen wasn't even used all that much other than to let you know when you'd get a gold star by hitting the button at the right time, so they probably could stick it on the switch with more games if they wanted to.

I've looked at rhythm controllers and most of them are a bit more than I'd want to spend unless I really get into the game. I've seen some cheap-ish Project Diva ones though and may get one of those at some point since Megamix is on Steam now.

FYI those cheapish diva controllers are arse the buttons stick like crazy and its a known issue, i was considering dropping dollars on one and the consensus was to look at a Gamo2 controllers.
Although looking at the US version i can see why you'd consider the cheapo version, unfortunately all the gooks are price gouging the cheapo ones so the price difference is small for me.

Is anyone playing MAIMAI regularly i picked up a AIMO card today and of course Sega ID requirement is in Jap.

since it fits the topic and was kinda interesting, for anyone who wants more story in his rythm game:

Started playing a bit of the first Patapon. It's imcredibly charming though I'm habing trouble keeping the rythm. Like how it isn't simon says but requires different actions while still keeping the beat. May not be anything revolutionary but it's my first rythm game that plays like this.

best weeb dj porter robinson finally fulfills his childhood dream of getting his songs (officially) into DDR 🥲

Also in between the downtimes, Chris made a half-assed apology about the whole cab drama a few weeks ago and restricted his account, but his respect is pretty much dead to everyone at this point.

Fuckin' A. I would trade every new song with a Japanese name for a single Captain Jack song. Even a rehash from an older mix.

I didn't appreciate Centerfold when I had it, and now it's gone. My blood runs cold, my machines have since been sold

I find it funny (and annoying) that in the US since DDRMAX2 they tried to heavily promote him including music videos to his songs (the first DDRMAX only gave "My Generation" like ONE sentence in the informtation section, so IMO it doesn't count), and then just stopped after SuperNova, right around the time he died (may he rest in peace)

Konami cut off the licensing deal with Toshiba EMI (since absorbed by Universal Music Japan in 2013), who was the one licensing Captain Jack and the other famous euro artists/songs through its Dancemania label, shortly after SuperNOVA's release.

I'd like the old songs back too, but frankly "licensing" is the keyword as to why they probably won't be back any time soon, bar a major popularity revival surpassing the golden days or maybe for its 30th anniversary or something. (Konami did bring back some licenses from X to X3, including Captain Jack, which lasted around 5 years, and also commissioned some 20th anniversary Dancemania "remix" covers for A20, but they're on gold cabs only.) Trying to reacquire the rights scattered across various countries/companies/labels for each region including Japan would be a major pain in the ass (also fuck you JASRAC), and I wouldn't be shocked if its budgets are probably nowhere near as it was before cause arcades are dying worldwide. At the end of the day, weebs in Japan are the ones mostly throwing money at Konami, so they're gonna cater to them more than nostalgic gaijins. As shitty as they are though, they're not as bad as SEGA; at least Konami found a way to bring their games over to America while still maintaining online functionality, SEGA has not bothered with CHUNITHM and maimai bar a sorely out of date Project Diva.

Just like, don't license expensive big songs like these and then put the money towards Captain Jack's library and bob's your uncle, because who else on the entire planet is licensing Captain Jack songs right now? Shit nigga we could have Take Me Out to the Ball Game

The thing is different companies own the rights to Captain Jack depending on where you are in the planet and they could all have differing amounts as to how much they want Konami to cough up (or maybe even refuse to license it), even if no one is licensing it right now.

Japan in particular has different copyright laws and tends to be a lot more anal about rights and royalties all that. More specifically JASRAC, the dominate copyright org in Japan, does/has tried to do some really stupid overreaching shit to squeeze as much compensation $$$ as possible, like trying to make private music schools pay royalties for music played in private lessons. In that same article:

In a commencement address this year, the president of Kyoto University quoted Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." When Jasrac spotted a transcript of the speech on the university's website, it asked for compensation.

It eventually retracted the request, but its reputation took yet another hit.

For example, the original "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" song itself is public domain in America but I believe still under copyright in Japan until 2026 if I'm interpreting it correctly because it doesn't enter public domain until 70 years after the writer or last co-writer's death (the original writer died in 1956)...unless it only applies to Japanese works.

https://www.cric.or.jp/english/clj/cl2.html (article 51)

Konami still puts "credits" for remixes of traditional/classical songs like La Bamba, V, Kakumei, Sakura, etc. on the attract screen, even though they've long since entered public domain. Songs from certain Konami artists on other games can be played in the arcades, but not on their official online PC equivalent service, even those that are Konami originals and not licensed songs, because of dumb JASRAC copyright rules.

Apart from licensing, Konami probably finds more value from those licenses in baiting normie passerbys to put in credits and "play". I put play in quotations because 99% of the time its kids or zoomers that run off after one song (or even the tutorial) or pick the same normie songs every time, or always fail out the first song they pick.

even those that are Konami originals and not licensed songs, because of dumb JASRAC copyright rules.
Is that why Naoki re-did his classic songs? I remember that causing a MASSIVE shitstorm when that happened and it never made sense to me in the first place.

For DYNAMITE RAVE, it was due to one of the original vocalists' contracts expiring iirc, though I'm not sure if it was ever confirmed to be specifically JASRAC-related. I wouldn't be surprised if it was, though. For the other ones, considering the classic songs on the current arcade version still have their original vocalists and not the redone versions, I don't think it was contract related (though certainly sounded like it at the time). Maybe Naoki trying to "update" it to the times and failing miserably.

Going back to the Captain Jack thing, despite my long sperging on contracts and all that, I'm sure Konami does have plenty of money to just say fuck it and throw money to get their library even with contractual bullshit, but in all likelihood I don't see it happening given the previous normie/weeb bating reasons + Konami in general being stingy as hell. Plus the nostalgic casuals still go to the other familiar Konami originals without a problem. ngl I don't think I've ever seen anyone IRL be like "eyyo fuck this daikenkai and candy bullshit, where's my captain jack and waka laka????"

Is it weird to think that DJ hero is a better game than Beatmania in concept and execution? I mean, DJ Hero takes the concept of being a dj in a better direction than just pressing buttons like Beatmania does.

DJ Hero is criminally underrated. It is the best plastic instrument game.
