Technically MK 1995 had a trio of leads with Johnny Cage effectively sharing the co-lead role and beating Goro (the second to last boss of the game and in lore, the "champion" of Mortal Kombat. Sonya was a damsel in distress/Cage's love interest and even written out of the second game/only appearing in bondage in the background of one of the stages.

While hardcore fans prefer the ninjas, Cage is arguably one if not THE most popular characters in the game to normies and this is reflected in how MK projects without Cage (in particular MK2 and the USA Cartoon) tend to fail miserably. Which doesn't bode well for the reboot, which notoriously cut Cage and replaced him with an Asian Donut Steele character for the simple crime that Johnny was white and white males can't be leads in films anymore.

Robert only jumps on moving wagons, and when it's safe to do so. He can be surprisingly restrained when it comes to these topics, when we all know he can't help himself when talking like a insane person when it comes to stuff like "thinkers vs belivers" and so on.

Of course most of it is basic common sense, just finger to the wind and say the correct opinion already say by the people that "matter", but even so, he only does when there isn't that much of a backlash.

And in the case of this girl in Columbus, yeah, people aren't all that gung-ho about doing this "systemic racism" all over again, even Lebron James had to quietly sit back and pipe down, others like Robert's beloved AOC also got a clap back because she had to insist that the conviction of the George Floyd case wasn't good enough.

At one point people get tired of this, there is a difference between activism and bullying. The line may be thin, but it is felt, and when the sentiment is "either agree with us, or get shouted", then, even if slowly, people will fight back.
