Well, some would argue that the studio system never really went away. Yeah, the crop of movies everybody remember from the late 60's and 70 was the whole New Hollywood wave, the stuff from the Coppola, Sam Peckinpah and the other auteur artists, and the studios were indeed putting a lot of money on these guys hands, which proved to be a disaster when "artists" egos got out of control, and we got stuff likeHeaven's Gate.

But if you look at the wiki for the output of movies from the studios at the same time frame, you will see a lot production line cheap flicks, with the same lowest common denominator you mentioned, and while these didn't get the oscars nor the top grossing places, considering how cheap they were made, you could argue that they were the money makers for the studios, thus the studio system kinda kept hollywood alive.

I mean, they call it an industry, the function is to pump out product, not so much exercise artistic expression. if someone can do that and still make money, great, but if we can make the same money with just a streamlined aproach, even better.

And for these Marvel monsters, they need to find a way to streamline production, because for FX alone it requires a fucking army for the ever increasing set pieces the have been doing..

Not to say anything about the story, because the directors have next to zero input, and considering that most of the scenes, more so the set pieces, are already storyboarded and in pre-production before the director even sign the contract, then there isn't much point for a director already, except news buzz, which seems to be part of the production line as well.

And I don't think this system will go away either. I dunno about capeshit, it might be here for yet another decade, fuck if I know,but I don't see these big blockbusters getting any sort of authorship personality. But if that is what you are looking for, there are plenty of movies and places to watch more interesting movies, capeshit is very easy to ignore with so many alternatives.

No middle budget films can be made and entire generations worth of directors, like David Lynch and John Waters, can't fucking get a project greenlit because you either have to do a microbudget film paid out of pocket or via investors or whore yourself out to do a big budget film and pray it makes the profit projections or you are fucked.

I mean, when you have previs artists coming up with the shots for your movie, and those shots are then fed into automated cameras that replicate that shot perfectly every time, what's the fucking point of having a director at all? Yeah, Asian audiences don’t really care about random Asians from North America. If they wanted people from that part of the world to pay attention, they should have cast a major Korean star.
