Though it does highlight a core contradiction. He's nostalgic to a fault, yet he keeps chasing the "superior future!". It's like he's saying the world must change except for him.
The reason Bob is like this is due to just how purely miserable he is as a person. He may have a huge ego, but Bob is clearly unhappy with his life and it shows. He's nostalgic for the past because his childhood was the last time he was truly happy. Or at the very least, the closest he's ever been to being happy. He didn't have any responsibilities that come with being an adult and he hadn't yet failed at being an "adult" yet.
He yearns for the future however because even he understands that his childhood is over and isn't coming back. All he can hope for is that one day his life will change for the better.
