What's funnier is the New Guy artist had a track record of doing comics where she try's to pain others as "bad" and herself as better. For example, one comic she overhears a person, a female, spending time with another female, so the purple haired dummy jumps in going "OMG!! ARE YA WUUVERS! HOW'S YOUR WUUUVEER!", so the person corrects them and says they are just friends to which purple one responds "Oh, so you're one of those boring people" or something along those lines.

I have less respect for the otherwise well-adjusted people, cowering in front of the mob in an eternally craven bid for acceptance, than I do the idiots who fight them in a dumb way. Scott Alexander from SlateStarCodex does the same mincing noncomittal horseshit as Shen, where he lets radicals 'on his side' bully him into submission over having a spine and telling people when it's no longer ok to treat you that way over partisan bullshit.
The same reason he pretends the MCU is some niche nerdy thing instead of the largest entertainment product of the last 15 or so years.

Last I'd heard of him, I thought Shen was finally showing some signs of growing a spine and making some comments that were pretty much trolling the type of leftists who jump down his throat. I'm not talking about his "Get along with people with different opinions" comment here. I recall him saying something that wasn't exactly "based and redpilled" but a bit more aggressive and sarcastic.
I’m a few years older than him and I, my brothers, and our friends were all athletes (and attractive ones— sorry, Bob) who played NES and Sega Genesis. Even the popular girls played. Hell, there was a time when our mom even got into it (mostly Tetris on Gameboy). This was in the early and mid-1990s. Bob is so invested in his geeks vs. shitlords headcanon that he’s trying to rewrite history.
Sports games have been popular forever. Tecmo Bowl and Blades of Steel on NES, Madden and NBA Jam took off on 16 bit, Ken Griffey Jr on SNES. I believe even Bob's beloved Nintendo put out black box Golf and Baseball games.
Madden. NBA Jam, and Tecmo Bowl were EVERYTHING in middle school. Just because those are the closest Bob ever got to playing a sport doesn’t mean actual athletes weren’t a primary market for them.

Yeah, what really made vidya game culture different back then wasn't that they were considered to be for nerds, but that many adults considered them to be toys for children. Sure, there were a few adult competitive gamers like that Donkey Kong speed run scam guy, but they were exceptions to the rule. Generally you were expected to be above video games (just like cartoons) if you wanted to be seen as a respectable adult, unless you played with your kids or maybe occasionally went to the arcade as a social activity.
The nerds vs jocks divide was really popular kids vs socially awkward motherfuckers. Hollywood took some stereotypes about both and exaggerated the fuck out of them, usually making nerds the "good guys" and jocks the "bad guys." Some of this was because various producers and directors were outsiders themselves growing up and bitter about it, but mainly because rooting for the underdog is usually more interesting and exciting than rooting for Chad. And since Robert's brain doesn't distinguish between TV fiction and real life in the same way a normal person does...
