It wasn't like Bethesda-tier buggy. Performance was better too.
Yeah it was Bethesda-tier buggy. Definitely. SoC was incredibly buggy with shit performance, CS was pretty much unplayable with even worse performance.
And GSC never bothered fixing their singleplayer performance, kept releasing patches for the multiplayer nobody cared about.
 
Instead fans did all the patching, but GSC later took all the credit for it. We sure their team wasnt made of gypsies as well?

I followed STALKER's development from the early days, played the multiplayer beta, and was super hyped. The game upon release was good, but lackluster. GSC then promised strong community interactions and the 1.1 patch that would add free play after the game's ending and so on.
They kept the community interaction up for like two months, never did the 1.1 patch, and instead did the turd that was Clear Sky. I remember when they were like "But look at our advanced next gen graphics and our cool depth of field effect!" Yaaaay, it has a built in "I forgot my glasses outside the Zone" setting.
It ran like shit, ALife was still broken, and the factory wars and emissions made the game near unplayable at launch, and even with that fixed it has abysmal pacing and sucked ass all around.
Not even a single underground section, which were the highlights of SoC. Ignored CoP for years after release because of that. It fixed some issues, but really, it only existed to enable some good mods. And now with Anomaly you don't need any of that shit anymore because modders actually fixed it.

Wonder when the Call of Chernobyl mod has to rebrand as Call of Chornobyl because Ukie sensitivity.
 
Are any significant features locked behind campaign progress? I enjoy wandering around and pissing about far more than the story.

call of chernobyl stopped development in like 2016 man, the unreleased remnants of 1.5 was ultimately the foundation for anomaly, and unfortunately the developers of anomaly were very good at making cool new lua guis and porting new models in but basically had no intention of ever fixing any of the core engine or structural organizational issues that CoC had from being a hastily developed hackjob. Call of the Zone was basically a proper re-design of CoC as a properly engineered project but it never got the attention it needed because the developer fucking died

i haven't touched xray shit in years but if i recall anomaly still has the janky ass half baked CoC squad system where instead of every squad being spawned and then given tasks by the AI director so its all controlled by scripting, there's a mish mash of hard coded ai behaviors on maps, hard coded named squads, and dynamic stalker squads that make any abstract development goal really difficult because there's three different ways the game does things and they didn't decide to stick with one
 
People are angry that A-life 2 isn't real and the game just spawns enemies around you. I'm more annoyed by the combat AI just forgetting about the player in the middle of a firefight and walking away. It completely ruins my immersion every time, it's just so blatant that the game is broken.
 
I found a place underground near the poppy field and I sort of softlocked myself inside since the enemy ambush outside respawns endlessly and faster than I can fight them.

I'd love to play this game if it didn't turn into a complete stutter-fest five minutes after I open a save. anyone else getting this problem?
I was getting some stuttering and an overall floaty feeling. I used the mod on nexusmods Optimized Tweaks S.2 and I set my vsync to fast in the Nvidia global settings. It runs alot better now. The game seems to feel alot better to play now.
