Saints Row thread

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I know there is no point in explaining it to you since you're a mindless consoomer that enjoys when corporations shit in your mouth, but basically everything is wrong with the GTA Trilogy. R* outsourced it to the same company that did the mobile versions and early console "remasters" which were infamous for being full of bugs. And what they did with the Trilogy is that they've done the most lazy way of redoing the game. They haphazardly slapped RenderWare functions onto Unreal, since with Unreal it's trivial to get pretty reflections for normies to drool over, but they fucked up everything. Bugs that were present in the 1.0 releases still persist, and so do bugs introduced by Grove Street Games (formerly War Drum Studios) in their attempts to remaster the trilogy for mobile devices and consoles, and they've introduced even more bugs on top of that. They were so lazy that they "improved" geometry by doing subdivision surface on everything, no matter what it was, which was evident by the fact that the hexagonal screw on one of the donut parlors became round. The textures were upscaled with some very shitty algorithms where a bunch of Brazillian modders did it better for the OG games, and various text got assumed by the AI leading to a lot of misspelled signs.

True fans of the series just get the original 1.0 versions of the trilogy and mod that to fix any bugs from the OG release, but nowadays you'll have to basically either get an old retail copy or pirate it, since R* pulled the original games from the stores in favor of the vastly inferior remakes, not to mention that R*'s old Steam versions were castrated by attempts to "fix" issues and removing songs because of the license expiration. Vadim M has very good videos explaining how shit Grove Street Games/War Drum Studios are at their job and why you should never buy their shit. But you definitely won't care since you're enjoying the GTA Trilogy and you're planning on buying this shitty reboot without a second thought of whether or not it's good. You're the reason the industry is so shit, because people like you don't think if a product is worth the money or not, people like you just have to buy the newest shiniest thing no matter what it is, leading to the entire industry releasing more and more garbage, because people like you accept it and people like you make profit for them.
> you just want the newest and shiniest thing

> spends about half of his gaming time playing used PS2 titles

The reason the industry is shit is because of the proliferation of online titles designed for normie social play bullshit. While design and quailty tanked because if this, a half-assed ps2 re-release isn't the cause of this, it's a symptom. The cause of it is the huge AAA releases that continue to be this way and continue to be bought up in large quantities, and then continue to be fed by battle passes, season passes, mtx etc etc.

Now I was not aware of some of the things you mentioned. At the same time I waited nearly a year to buy the Trilogy because I was aware there were issues, and I got it for $25.

I am most likely NOT buying the reboot anytime soon.

Congrats on coming off as an absolute redditor tho, really made me forget I was on kiwifarms.

You'll be the second person I ask here: what would you suggest i play then? My tastes are mostly Simulators. You wanna sum up my tastes in games in one game? SnowRunner.

So Shoot. With that info, Sell me on what you think is a proper game that I should be playing and I will buy it

Ah, Kiwifarms - where else can I easily find autistic slapfights without one side or the other (or the Jannies) DFE-ing everything.

@Glowie Hunter Art Bell - I recommend just saving your money. Sure, it’s PSN dosh you can’t exactly do anything with, but the SR Reboot isn’t exactly something you need to convince us is or isn’t worth buying - this game has reeked of dumpster fire since the reveal, and that’s only gotten stronger as they’ve shown more.

If you feel you absolutely have to buy it - for whatever reason I don’t fucking know - then wait for a sale. Methinks this game’ll fall in price fast…

It'll definitely drop in price pretty fast, it might even end up in bargain bins like Mass Effect Andromeda & Anthem.

Hell, Agents of Mayhem regularly goes on sale for $3, so you may just have $97 left over if the same happens here.

SnowRunner eh, well you can either try MudRunner and SpinTires which are both predecessors to SnowRunner (aka inferior in a lot of aspects) or wait for a miracle to happen and for some other company to make a new game in the absolute niche of "realistic off-road simulators", much like fans of The Sims are still waiting for a new game in the niche of "dollhouse simulator". If you want you could try BeamNG, it's a completely different car simulator where the focus is placed on the car physics itself, including the way the car functions and how it bends on crashes. Though BeamNG is a PC exclusive, so you won't find that on PSN.

Or he could always try some indies. However: see the aforementioned shut taste per buying the GTA Trilogy remaster.

However, if he’s willing to give it a shot:

It depends on what you have. Do you have a PS4, PS5, PS3? If both and you absolutely can ONLY have third person sim games like GTA then your options are limited to triple-A pseudo-sandboxes, but if you’re willing to stretch your definition of sim:

- Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
- Any of the mainline Yakuza games
- Just Causes 3 and 4
- Watch Dogs Legion
- AC Valhalla (good open-world game, bad AC game)
- Prey (first person immersive sim but a really good one)
- The Hunter: Call of the Wild (really in-depth mechanics customization and world for what’s supposed to be a hunting game)
- Sunset Overdrive
- Mad Max
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Mercenaries 2
- ACIV: Black Flag/Rogue (pirate sim, limited though it may be)
- The later Deus Ex entries should be on there

I’m sure there’s others I’m forgetting.

Last resorts:
- Cyberpunk 2077 (not nearly as buggy, not as in-depth as Witcher and I’m gonna guess you’ve already played this too, but is what you’re looking for if you want massive customization options)
- Stray (Walking sim with cat up until the half-way point, but I don’t know if that’s the kind of sim you mean)

You could also try the reworked PlayStation Plus program if that’s out and try some games you missed out on. He’ll get the lowest tier and get free games with Plus, I dunno it’s hard to give suggestions just based off “simulator games”. If you’re literally JUST looking for GTA clones when you mean sims and you won’t play anything else, then you’re frankly SOL on the indie and I’ll just say to broaden your horizons a bit and try branching to immersive sandbox games.

Then I can give you a massive list of indies and AAA.

I've played mudrunner, physics are overall more realistic but beyond that snowrunner is far better in every aspect. Most of the bitching I've seen besides physics seems to come from ruskieboos bitching that the entire game isn't RUSSIA AT ALL TIMES like the first one was. The community for that game sucks anyway, it's good to play with friends tho.

Saber has a Dakar game coming out, based off snowrunner. No set date yet.

I have auto + beam on my pc. Never been into Sims besides castaways

- Sleeping Dogs: have it, almost done with it. Very good.

- Yakuza. Tried it. Good but not my thing.

- Just Cause 3/4; I have 100%d every just cause game and plan on getting a Scorpio tattoo

- WDL: WD went to shit after the first game. Ubisoft trash

- AC: not a fan of any ac games but black flag

- Prey: watched some gameplay, unsure

- HunterCOW: on my list but I need the time to sink into it

- sunset overdrive: will look into this.

- madmax: I'm on my 3rd playthrough

- rdr2: I fucking hate Rockstar but this one is a masterpiece. Shows what current gen games could be

- mercenaries 2: have 100%d both games, tattoo planned. One of my favorites of all time

- dues ex; not my thing

- cp2077: dryyyyyy pretty lights simulator

Regarding the ps stuff (I have a ps5) I'm waiting for more games to he added to the catalog.

You've misread me here. I don't want a "GTA sim". I like open world games and I like simulators and racing sims/simcades.

I like quality sims tho, not jankware. Only ones I'm really into rn are FS and Snowrunner.

I only like open world games where I can interact with the world and its assets outside of scripted missions, and where gameplay is still fun after missions are over. Just cause, mercenaries, nms, fallout/es are great examples of games that do this for me.

Oh yeah my bad. Don't know how I missed that. In that case:
You've probably already played most of these but just for posterity:
- Ghosts of Tsushima
- InFamous (any of them, they're all available on PS4/PS5)
- Elden Ring obviously, unless you hate Soulslikes
- Insomniac's Spider-Man (or just wait less than a year for 2)
- MGSV:TPP/Ground Zeroes but y'know: Konami.
- Dying Light 1 & 2
- FFXV isn't a great FF game but a really good road trip game around the open world, and its hack-and-slashing is satisfying and the replayable side-content is fun.
- You could wait for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf it's that's your thing.
- Need For Speed 2021 will be out soon, but y'know...EA.
- I know you got BeamNG.drive but the Project Cars series is also pretty good.
- Car Mechanic Simulator 2021
- Euro Truck Simulator 2, obviously
- Wreckfest, a spiritual successor to FlatOut (though dunno if you'll enjoy demolition derby racing)
- Ride 4 is really nice on PS4 for two reasons: it actually uses the new DualSense's features to its fullest and it is bar none the most gorgeous game on the system. Driving can be difficult to master, but once you get a handle on it it's REALLY good.
- GRIP: Combat Racing is a really fun arcade-style racer but might be too arcade-y for your tastes, so YMMV
- GRID Legends
- Gear.Club Unlimited 2
- SRX: The Game
This is lacking regular simulators and other smaller AA titles, but I'll add and edit to this later as I keep digging. This is just what I was able to remember off the top of my head and I'd rather not keep derailing the thread with more recommendation posts.

I just want to point out that if you really want to spend your money on a game that you still think looks mediocre and boring, then why don’t you spend your money on a game like this instead?

A game like this with a main character as famous as he is today would never lecture me about student loans and “mugmosas”.

I either know or own everything listed here

The handful of PS3 release racing games that I'd like to go back and play require me to buy a PS3 again (not readily available on PC) which is on my list. Besides that, I've exhausted my options. I wasn't saying that lightly lol

SSRX has a WoO version coming out soon, there's also an NHRA game that looks positively awful

Then either wait for new stuff or try other games, man, I don't know what to tell you. Or use this website and find something from the literal hundreds of games out there. You're bound to find something better than a worse version of SR3, another game that you've probably already played.

Where did I ever say non of these were proper? I enjoy many of the games you've listed. I just have or know about them and don't want you to waste your time. I appreciate the listings and the effort on your part.

I'd like the reboot to succeed, as a fan of the series, and I hope the woke shit is overblown and it's a decent game. But I'm not buying it day one

What I look for in a game is kinda rare, I've accepted that. But I also play the games that do have the bulk of it for a long time.

Alright, so since I've derailed this thread I'll put it back on track. I got around to watching rhe ~30 min of leaked footage. Here are my thoughts

Pros:
- Visually more appealing than SR3/4 etc which looked almost cartoonish
- environment does look nice. Lighting and coloring, scale of the buildings etc all looks good. The setting looks well done and it's nice to see a US setting that's not based off of LA or some random mix of midwest cities and NY.
- enemy gangs seem to be immigrants and redditors. I enjoy shooting both of those things
- particles/destruction etc looks good, things seem to crumble and fall apart when shot/hit. Explosions look nice
- a dumb one but I enjoy stuff like this: vehicles even of the same type have variation. When they pick up rhe developer from city hall there's 2 jeeps, one is clean and the other is dirty with a canoe on the roof. I've always like details like this and I feel it adds a bit more life to a game.
- overall gameplay looks to be at least decently fun, nothing shown seemed tedious

Cons:
- fire looks like absolute shit. When the monster truck hits the rocks the flames come thru said rock like it's not even there.
- sound is awful, cars at max speed have a droning sound, guns just sound like someone clapping, some impacts had no sound at all when there should have been a bang or something.
- the crazy amount of sparks, lights and effects from guns is fucking annoying. In the church it looks like a fucking fireworks show because of the different colored bullshit Going on.
- there were over a dozen instances where various scripted scenes and jump/grab mechanics just looked absolutely janky as fuck.
- female Hispanic/latina whatever mechanic/gearhead trope for the millionth game in a row.
- characters make no fucking sense, what is this dorky black kid even doing here? Twitter guy is fucking annoying as well.
- looks like hordes of enemies showing up from the beginning of the game onward, if the video is in order, which means difficulty is probably pretty non-existent.
- re used assets/mechanics/menu bits from SR3/4 are clearly visible, which is worrying.
- SR1/2 had fantastic soundtracks. SR3 had a hit or miss one, but they made a huge deal of marketing it because of Kanye. Whereas I've seen no real info regarding the soundtrack of this game (although I haven't looked very hard) making me think it may not have anything but NCS type stuff. Also, no licensed music is present in that gameplay at all, and the only radio I heard sounded like a talk station.

I'm on the fence. I really am. Going to dig a bit more. I love SR and I want the reboot to succeed but this is very questionable

Here’s a video that shows some of the songs that are on the radio.
Someone also collected the names of the tracks shown and listed them.

I’m afraid there will not be an Ultor FM or any standout radio station here. The tracks in this video were kind of bland.

Ultor FM was one of my favorite stations of the game. Most of the music in this game is modern trash. The one thing I loved about the older Saints Row games is how the soundtracks had both modern and old music from all genres. Hell, they had a music station that played nothing but 80s music in SR2

No rock station either from the looks of things.

Fuck Volition.
