I just really can't get over this, we have a series known for edgy humor, they go out of their way to tone it down and somehow thought the fans were going to like that?
To make matters worse, we're not talking humor that was ever THAT edgy, just goofy Adult Swim style stuff and you're telling me even that is too much for modern culture to handle? Give me a break.
I think this is so especially baffling because, like, after all this time, after all these woke releases, after just the endless onslaught of total garbage being forced down our throats, after hijacking so many beloved franchises, they're just continuing to do the exact same shit straight out of the playbook, and they continue to act so surprised and sheepish when called out, showing once again that they couldn't be more out-of-touch with their target audience. Every single bit of what we've seen and heard about Saints Row just comes off like it was all planned out by a marketing department that advertises itself as In Touch™ with the Hashtag Youth of Today™. It's not just woke nonsense, it's outright trite. You can't even hope for a good shitshow out of this thing, it's just nothing but a retread of the same boring woke nonsense we've seen for over half a decade now.
When a game is terrible but not trite, you can still enjoy laughing at it and using it as a prompt for jokes, which makes games like Ride to Hell Retribution a good pick for YouTubers to riff on. It's gaudy and stupid, but makes for an entertaining show for the audience - just like, well, just like lolcows do, actually. But when a game is just a boring, middling, incompetent retread of so much shit we've been sick of for years, it won't be remembered as anything of value. That's why there are so many average games out there that are palatable, but not particularly memorable, and don't get the same kind of attention something like Ride to Hell does. Even the logos for every older entry in the series have more life than the boring-ass flat-style reboot logo with a boring straight-laced font and a white/light blue color scheme. It just looks so corporate and sanitized for a series known for fighting corporate fucks with dildo bats and driving around a septic truck spraying sewage all over their buildings as a side mission.
Even the imagery on display reeks of corporate:
Yeah, nothing says Fight the Power™ more than a smug black girl with zero sex appeal holding a big rifle, sitting on top of a defaced statue depicting a cowboy. That image alone tells the whole story about what this game is: an unimaginative by-the-numbers product that is going to be safe and inoffensive to the loudest people on the internet that don't even play video games. It's just gonna be another one of those games that gets a lot of awards, sells very poorly, and has an entertaining Metacritic page with high critic scores and dismal user scores.
But, that's also coming from a series with a reputation for being very fun and imaginative, and a respite for those unhappy with Grand Theft Auto,
eight years after the release of GTA5, with no GTA6 yet announced, and a full decade since the last Saints Row game that still felt like a GTA clone. This is going to easily be the worst game in 2022, I'm calling it right now.
