Saints Row thread

The biker wearing nothing on his chest but his washboard abs and his tattoos and hiding his face with a piece of tech far too expensive to see in this poor neighborhood wielding a gun doesn't intimidate you? The butch bitch with a rocket launcher doesn't intimidate you? The down to business woman in a leather jacket who doesn't even flinch at seeing a dealer get murdered doesn't intimidate you?
No.

Student loans are just "one of the reasons they turn to crime?" What are the other reasons? Did someone call them the wrong gender pronoun?
Cynical theory is they'll toss in:

1. Got fucked over by the white man in some way or form
2. Police framed them for something so now they have a record that will keep them from getting their dream "do nothing" job with their degree and as such, have to turn to crime or get a blue collar job
3. Something rape related that make them turn to crime in the name of "punishing rapists" and them embracing being evil when everyone points out that there was no actual PROOF that person they are calling a rapist was a rapist and destroyed an innocent man's life off of gossip and inuendo.
4. Breaking Bad syndrome: they need money for cancer treatment or insulin.
5. The Randian strawman of "they are depraved because they are deprived" excuse where the SJW kids in SR '21 do crimes and horrible acts of violence because they can't get the new Iphone or have to shop for clothing at Wal-Mart or can only afford to eat off the Dollar Menu at McDonalds rather than the expensive hipster restaurants they want to eat out at.

To be fair, the BDSM gang in BS3 has snipers that dress like one Maximillian Strauss (and you can even buy their snazzy red leather trenchcoat at some point), so adding more vampire shit to SR isn't exactly out of line with some of the aesthetics.

But it's not like there's anything that could look out of place in SR4.

Look up the idiots making the game that look like the characters and see what they cry about. It'll probably be the main reasons.

Played every game in the series except Saints Row IV (I thought it had gotten too silly at this point) and love the series but good God, does the trailer for the remake leave me cold. Looks like they've gone back to the first game where it was a GTA clone except not good.

I just really can't get over this, we have a series known for edgy humor, they go out of their way to tone it down and somehow thought the fans were going to like that?

To make matters worse, we're not talking humor that was ever THAT edgy, just goofy Adult Swim style stuff and you're telling me even that is too much for modern culture to handle? Give me a break.

I think this is so especially baffling because, like, after all this time, after all these woke releases, after just the endless onslaught of total garbage being forced down our throats, after hijacking so many beloved franchises, they're just continuing to do the exact same shit straight out of the playbook, and they continue to act so surprised and sheepish when called out, showing once again that they couldn't be more out-of-touch with their target audience. Every single bit of what we've seen and heard about Saints Row just comes off like it was all planned out by a marketing department that advertises itself as In Touch™ with the Hashtag Youth of Today™. It's not just woke nonsense, it's outright trite. You can't even hope for a good shitshow out of this thing, it's just nothing but a retread of the same boring woke nonsense we've seen for over half a decade now.

When a game is terrible but not trite, you can still enjoy laughing at it and using it as a prompt for jokes, which makes games like Ride to Hell Retribution a good pick for YouTubers to riff on. It's gaudy and stupid, but makes for an entertaining show for the audience - just like, well, just like lolcows do, actually. But when a game is just a boring, middling, incompetent retread of so much shit we've been sick of for years, it won't be remembered as anything of value. That's why there are so many average games out there that are palatable, but not particularly memorable, and don't get the same kind of attention something like Ride to Hell does. Even the logos for every older entry in the series have more life than the boring-ass flat-style reboot logo with a boring straight-laced font and a white/light blue color scheme. It just looks so corporate and sanitized for a series known for fighting corporate fucks with dildo bats and driving around a septic truck spraying sewage all over their buildings as a side mission.

Even the imagery on display reeks of corporate:

Yeah, nothing says Fight the Power™ more than a smug black girl with zero sex appeal holding a big rifle, sitting on top of a defaced statue depicting a cowboy. That image alone tells the whole story about what this game is: an unimaginative by-the-numbers product that is going to be safe and inoffensive to the loudest people on the internet that don't even play video games. It's just gonna be another one of those games that gets a lot of awards, sells very poorly, and has an entertaining Metacritic page with high critic scores and dismal user scores.

But, that's also coming from a series with a reputation for being very fun and imaginative, and a respite for those unhappy with Grand Theft Auto, eight years after the release of GTA5, with no GTA6 yet announced, and a full decade since the last Saints Row game that still felt like a GTA clone. This is going to easily be the worst game in 2022, I'm calling it right now.

You know, the Boss was always a snarker, and in the later games make a goofy quip or two because s/he didn’t find the attackers much of a threat. In the trailer, she just stands there looking like “typical female main character” like it was no challenge at all.

And the company doesn’t seem to understand that there’s a difference between the two.

I would say this zeitgeist started in a big way in 2016 with the Ghostbusters reboot, over half a decade we've had to endure shitty garbage insulting it's own audience and losers defending said shitty garbage out of spite, I feel so robbed.

That's also not natural, that shit should have played itself out by now, compare 2011, which gave us SR3, to 2006, which gave us SR1, a lot had changed from 2006 to 2011, but here we are in 2021 and 2016 might as well have been yesterday, the only actual difference is in 2016 you could at least leave your house without worry.

This is what's honestly so creepy about it, people used to understand how creepily powerful corporations were getting and understood why that was a bad thing, now corporations have only gotten so much more powerful in recent years that any satire or criticism of them is shunned.

It's crazy that Saints Row would provide a perfect example of that.

"Instead of calling the auto shop Rim Jobs, we're going to call it Jim Robs!"

Woke Humor at its finest.
Such a perfect example of how fucking stupid this new game is, I thought sex acts like rimming was supposed to be stunning and brave?

Nobody's saying the game has to have /pol/ tier edgy humor, but the fact that we can't even have the Adult Swim style goofy humor the games used to have is just mind boggling.

You can tell they were really wanting to wow the world when all the explosions go off, and they focus in on her face and she looks right at the camera all deadpan with her generic ass lesbian haircut. As if to be like "oh yeah, gamers. we went *there*."

Even though everyone has been going *there* for 5 years or more now.

It's the most nauseating, cringe inducing shit I've seen in a while. How did they ever think this was going to go over well?

I want to take a moment to personally apologize to TLOU2 people. I've often wondered why the fuck you guys still care a year later, but I think I get it now.

We care so much about GTA VI not being a disaster that we talk about that more than we talk about a Saints Row game in 2022 that doesn’t look or even act like a Saints Row game.

Someone already said it on this thread, but I think this looks like a former game that was replaced with the SAINTS ROW brand because the original one failed to get any excitement or interest.

after scanning through my steam library, i found out i bought saints row the third at some point. turns out i only have 30 minutes game time on it.

should i give it another try?
Saint's Row 2's general aesthetic, world, and story (with the gentlemen of the row patch) is better, but 3 runs better, has tighter controls, and is a fun time.
