I've been playing more and more of Agents of Mayhem, and while it took me a bit of time to get used to how its open world works compared to most, I gotta say, Volition did it again.

And now that their first venture into the PS4 hardware is complete, I am even more optimistic about what the next (and announced) Saint's Row can be. I too hope they go back at least to more grounded gameplay. After IV and Gat out of Hell, it almost felt like they had hit the ceiling in terms of gameplay; like it could never go back to normal.
Agents of Mayhem was a nice mixture of grounded and challenging and still a bit over-the-top and fun. Way more polished than IV, for sure.
I picked up AoM on a PSN flash sale for $8, and the final, fully patched game was fun, if a bit light on content. Reading forums and reddit to get answers to some questions as I played, I found out it was a mess at launch, and stayed messed up for months. Makes the game flopping easier to understand.

I just hope Volition is given enough time on their next game to release it in a stable form and with just a bit more to do. What turned out to be the end of the game seemed like it should have been the 33% mark, especially with all the talk about what was going on in other cities and all the villains you hear about, yet never encounter.

Yeah, it's not really an open world game, so much as an action one. The 12 agents and combat is really the focus. The world is just the playground to do that in, not so much to explore or really impact too much.

My first time playing, I was disappointed in how small Seoul actually was; but I was also in a car specifically to gauge it. Once I got out and just stayed on foot, collecting, doing, and fighting, it felt as big as it needed to be. (Remember too, that unlike most other cities, this game is just as vertical too; there's lots of things to climb)

I’d have traded the boring, samey lairs for a bit more city to work with. Getting all the agents maxed out becomes incredibly laborious, especially the ones that don’t get useful until they hit high levels. The package I got on PS4 came with Gat and Kinzie as bonus DLC, and Gat was practically the only agent who was good without grinding. Every one of the regular lineup ranged from weak to awkward, if they weren’t given a crippling handicap like Daisy’s warmup time for her chaingun.

Is it 14 including Gat and Kinzie?

Gotta admit, I'd rather not have them. I'd rather try out new people.

I don't mind grinding. Grinding is an addiction of mine, haha.

I think the total is 15 with Gat and Kinzie. Gat is actually the most fun to use, as he’s not quite the Johnny Gat we all know from SR, he’s basically a John Woo-movie cop with a hilariously foul mouth and an inexplicable Jersey accent. “Anyong fuckin’ haseo!” His special attack is basically the wraparound dolly shot from Hard Boiled, complete with doves.

So many of the characters were either useless until you get them to level 10 and they get their passive powers, and some still suck past that point. Even the better ones felt like they were given one excessive drawback, like the German football hooligan’s shotgun having a 6-inch range while enemies can pick you off from across the map.

I usually don’t mind a bit of grind, hell, I finished Act III of Dragon Quest XI, but when you are grinding with characters that feel like they weren’t actually designed for the game they are in, it sucks. And when the grinding has to be done in three level layouts with only small differences in starting point, it just gets boring. The strongholds fallling back to the enemy would have been a better mechanic if there were more of them and either on a longer timer, or random.

The whole game screamed that it needed another 6 months to really come together and it’s a shame. There was a fun foundation there, but because of the sales disaster, it never got the other cities planned for DLC and won’t get a sequel. I’d still say it’s one of the best games I got for under $10, and considering the company that puts it in from other flash sales, that’s high praise.

What about Kinzie? What's she like? She was always my favorite from SR, haha.

Kinzie is a very limited use character until she hits her max level, which sucks, because she’s as fun as she was in the Saints Row games. Her main uses are that she’s got maximum hacking and triple-jump abilities. The animation for her triple jump is hilarious. She does a little Tinker Bell-style kick of her feet on the third jump.

Sadly, her attack is weak and has a really short range, and she can’t take a hit until she’s leveled up a lot. Character-wise, she’s pretty much unchanged from SR, she’s a former FBI agent who hacked Mayhem just to find out if the mysterious agency really existed, and they hired her for being skilled enough to do so. Her kinky side is a little more subdued than in SR, which makes the moments it comes out funnier, especially things like when the genius gadget-maker girl is freaked out by Kinzie’s codename, which is Safeword.

So they went full meta, in just making it actually Kinzie, haha.

I would've thought her and "Friday" would be hard to keep apart; they sound and act a lot like; to the point I considered her that game's Kinzie.

Eh, you talked me into it. I'll check them both out. If I can.

There’s actually some funny flirting between the two, with Kenzie scaring Friday a bit.

I’d say Gat is worth a couple of bucks, but Kenzie is only worth about a buck. Considering the digital deluxe goes for $8 on flash sales every few months, it’s worthwhile to grab that, as I think one of them, or maybe both, can’t be purchased separately. You also get bonus costumes, some of which are great, like Daisy’s succubus costume.

So I went ahead and bought both Kenzie and Gat, but I also found a character you didn't tell me about called Lazuras. I bought all three because more agents is the point of the game.
I'm a one-at-a-time gamer so I'm only still on Rama (first story agent outside the first three) and leveling her up after I've already done it for Hollywood, Hardtack, and Fortune. I hate getting overwhelmed, so I was in no hurry to get to them after they were downloaded.
I'm a grinder and in open world games, I take my time, so I'm still at the start leveling up agents for the main game. But I wanted to know how each one would be added so I went to the open world and wound up adding Lazuras faster than I expected.

What's your opinion on her? Honestly, playing her is weird as hell. I'm still not really sure I understand what she does. I guess she's sort of a passive damage nuisance kind of thing?
Makes it rather difficult to play her since I've always been an attack-oriented player. Just wondering your thoughts on her, since you mentioned the other two.

Lazarus is basically a Warcraft warlock. Load up the enemy with Dots then slap them with a nuke that uses it all up.

I'm glad people came around to AoM. It was a guilty pleasure of mine and I was quite sad it got such a bad reception.

Fuck the crystal trophy though.

I found Lazarus to be totally useless. Weird and awkward to use, and her mobility wasn’t worth the hassles. You basically have to infect enemies and play keep away until they die, which takes way too long to be useful.

Yeah, I feel the same way, so it's probably a mutual feeling across most opinions.

I don't get that tactic. Play keep away and hope they die from passive damage.... in a balls-to-the-wall action game? This isn't a slow cover shooter, nor is this a game to play defensively in any scenario. What a weird choice.... Oh well, already paid, might as well experiment, I guess.
Maybe she'll be good with more upgrades and in some particular scenarios. :optimistic:

[RON HOWARD NARRATION] She won’t be.

Think this is worth a bump, but call me a fag if not: https://steamcommunity.com/app/9480/discussions/0/3149682775496734153/

IdolNinja's cancer has returned in a bad way and he's going to spend the rest of his life working on the Saints Row 2 patch for PC. And Volition is committed to finishing it after he passes, even hiring new programmers for it. He also teases Saints Row V a bit.

I've been trying to come up with a good way to say this, but there really is not one. I'm stepping down as Volition's Community Developer.

The reason why is a simple one; the cancer that I fought so hard with last year was only a temporary victory. It has come back with a vengeance, and I only have a short time left here on this earth.

You are probably wondering what will happen with the Saints Row 2 patch project. While I will no longer be managing Community, I will continue to work on this for as long as I am able. Please understand that it is 100% my choice to spend my last days contributing to it. Both Volition and Deep Silver have been incredibly supportive and have always given me the opportunity to leave the project with a solemn vow to make sure it gets finished without me. We have also been planning for this eventual moment, and brought on additional programming help some time ago to make sure it happens. While I am hesitant to give any kind of timeline, I can say that there have been huge strides made. I am confident that it will meet everyone's high expectations and standards (including mine.)

Anyone that knows me, understands that I have the deepest love for both the people at Volition and our community. I hope I was able to shine a light on how we make games and who we are as both developers and people, and maybe make everyone's day just a little bit brighter in some small way. Oh, and one last thing... while I probably won't be here to see the launch, our new Saints Row game is absolutely going to blow the roof off. I am beyond proud to have been a part of bringing it to life.

I kinda thought it got abandoned tbh, since I heard jack shit about this until now.

Imagine knowing you have little time on this Earth. AND spending your last days on a passion project. That's dedication.

Man it's a shame how every game on PC,sr3 remastered and gat out of hell are mostly competent, is a total mess. Awful performance and instability for sr2,poor performance for sr3, and awful performance and instability for sr4. Man do I hope that the sr2 re-release is good.
