I've only played Saint's Row 2. It was fun, nothing amazing except for the customization. I had more fun making characters in that game than actually playing through the game itself. I did end up beating it with my character looking like Hank Hill.

Bumping this thread to ask this question:

What do you guys think about how they finally found the source code for Saint's Row 2? Because we're supposed to get this big patch and the DLC for free if you got the PC port like I did.
Not many companies give a F about their games after release. Still shows that Volition cares about their franchises.

I don't know how ports work, would this also be a possible re-release on Nintendo Switch a la SR3 or SR4? Since they have the source code.

Debateable.

Should I remind you what they did with dex, and how disappointing it was in gat out of hell.

How in three they fuck over gat with a shitty death, and later retcon it with "No guys johnny wasn't killed, he was abducted by ALIENS" in four.

I think it's less that they care, and more trying to get good will by doing something the fan base wants, so the next game wont flop as hard as AoM.

They did want to do more with Dex, but they went bust at one point, around the time when they were working on a game where you eventually kill him. It was this weird assassin game where you can curve or move bullets as an Ultor Assassin.

Having played Saints Row 1-4, I have to say the series felt like it had an identity crisis moving forward.

Saints Row aged better than the 3D era GTAs. It wasn't a crime drama, it was a rise to power like storyline with funny moments. There are three gangs with different attributes, with the Saints being on the bottom. So, you take over the city by sabotaging rival gang operations and conquering strongholds. The story wasn't too serious or too outrageous, it had a great middle ground that left me entertained and wanting more. For a "GTA ripoff", Saints Row held its own.

Saints Row 2 I felt was darker in tone than SR1. The boss could speak, but he was more of an insensitive asshole. The story and setting I felt took itself too seriously (i.e. Stilwater being "expanded by some high corporation) and the earlier gangs were missing. The new gangs in 2 felt barebones compared to 1. However, SR2 is more accessible than 1. The activities you could do, while memorable, distracted from the bleaker tone of the story line. Septic Tank and Insurance Fraud were my favorite.

Saints Row: The Third. Interesting direction to say the least. I guess they were trying to differentiate themselves from GTA, so they went for a campy, arcadey tone. I can respect that, it does feel more consistent. It was more fluid than GTA IV; the zaniness reminds me of the fun from 3D GTA. I liked the new characters and the Boss being less angry. It was easier than 2 and 3. Having played SR3 before 1 and 2, the tone change was disorienting at first. I didn't hate it compared to other SR fans.

Saints Row IV, imo, is the best SR game yet. It cranked up the obscureness to 11, while being intelligent and thought provoking with its humor and story. It did add a recap of how all the SR games come together in continuity. It brings it all together in one universe. The superpower aspect made it different from other open world games. The humor and self referential content was the highlight of my experience. Enter the Domatrix was short, but the gaming tropes it added was a blast.

I'm interested with how and where the next Saints Row game will go. It could go either way, but one key thing it needs to do is continue to be different from GTA.

I'm surprised Saints Row 2 is actually getting some support after all this time. Good on Volition for giving it a bit more care after all this time. Gonna have to load it up later and see how it plays.
Didn’t they kill the online servers in 2 a little while after IV came out? At that point I was pretty much certain that Volition was done with 2 for good. What a pleasant surprise.

I'm not sure actually. Never did touch the online for that game. Hell it's amazing they bothered keeping the servers alive after IV was out at all. But speaking of IV, I have a love/hate relationship with it. The powers you get are fun to mess around with and made exploring the city a blast, but it made vehicles worthless and it felt less like I was playing a Saints Row game and more of a Crackdown game. I also missed the enemy variety you saw in the other games.

I personally prefer 3 out of all the ones I've played, but I see why people would be annoyed by the departure from 2.

Saints Row: The Third is getting a remaster:

The article doesn't say, but it'll be an Epic Games Store exclusive and is now open for preorders at $39.99.
That’s gotta go down as the laziest remaster ever, since the same engine was used for 4 and Gat out of Hell, and 4 was really just DLC for 3 that got separated and sold as a full game. All they have to do is port over the missions to the Re-Elected version of the engine.

And the capped frame rate on console. Honestly, if you have an Xbox One, you could buy the 360 version and the Season Pass for a fraction of the cost.

And SR3 was ported to the Switch. What's the point of this "remaster?" It's more like a port at this point.

Why the fuck didn’t they just make it DLC for the Re-Elected collection?

I've been playing more and more of Agents of Mayhem, and while it took me a bit of time to get used to how its open world works compared to most, I gotta say, Volition did it again.

And now that their first venture into the PS4 hardware is complete, I am even more optimistic about what the next (and announced) Saint's Row can be. I too hope they go back at least to more grounded gameplay. After IV and Gat out of Hell, it almost felt like they had hit the ceiling in terms of gameplay; like it could never go back to normal.
Agents of Mayhem was a nice mixture of grounded and challenging and still a bit over-the-top and fun. Way more polished than IV, for sure.
