Having given it some more thought, I think I know why "turning to crime to pay off their student loans" bothers me.
Aside from it being a lame attempt to cater to millennials (speaking of which, the oldest have turned 40, how's that more "fresh" than gangster culture?), why would someone becoming a criminal give a shit about obeying the law? If they're willing to sell drugs, become a pimp (although I doubt Volition would allow that, given their apparent shame for the older entries), or murder people to gain wealth, I doubt they'd care about paying their college off.
I know Saints Row veers to the sillier side of things, but this is such a bizarre premise to "validate" these characters.
