I was cautiously optimistic before all of this. I was even prepared to give the benefit of the doubt regarding Angela, considering the model really only looks bad in that one frame. After seeing Maria, though, I’m firmly pessimistic. I don’t really understand the whole Stellar Blade thing, but regardless, this is beyond “y women characters in games no sexy”. Maria’s physical depiction is heavily symbolic, and contrasted with Mary’s, and even the town itself. From the moment she is first presented on screen, it is a nonverbal communication of the character. She is sexy and alluring with an exposed midriff and miniskirt. She is also a bit strange and out of place, wearing such a revealing outfit when all of the other characters are wearing long sleeves and in fog, and in monochromatic bright pink in the otherwise muted town. Maria stands out and her design lends more to the unconscious, odd feeling that SH is known for. Contrast this with the new Maria redesign that has her in a black ensemble- black mini dress, black stockings, black boots, black choker- with a pink jacket cinched at the waist (her midriff is no longer exposed). Her coloring blends in with the town, she is dressed appropriately for the weather. She isn’t the sex-laden manifestation of James’ unconscious desires. There is no more foreboding sense of uncanniness in her appearance. Idk maybe I’m too media literate.
Also, I can’t quite put my finger on what exactly it is, but the graphics as a whole look too “clean”. It kind of reminds me of Bloober’s other work. Im one of those people who enjoyed Layers of Fear for what it was, and parts of the remake gameplay trailer remind me of the same graphics style that LoF had.
