I AMAZES me how there is no style deviation on Tumblr, like at all. I know I make this comment on the time both here and to friends but Tumblr's art scene is absolutely AWFUL. I can not tell one artist from another because they all look the same and it tells you a lot that the only artist who I can name by their handles as well as quickly identfy their work are fucking PORN ARTIST.

Yes, I have a better time looking up the porn artist on Tumblr because they at least work from their own styles (for the most part) rather than dick-riding (bad-dum-TISH) on Steven Universe and all the other shit shows on CN now. Another thing that sort of depresses me is the idea that this shit art is usually considered and seen as the 'proper' way to draw if you're female, a minority, or some other status that isn't 'CIS WHITE MALE' or whatever. THAT....is fucking disturbing but you can see it sort of encouraged around the site, like the idea of being a 'good' fill in the blank artist is to draw like this otherwise you won't get any sort of notice. Sorry, but I'd rather draw in problematic styles that causes Tumblr uses to trigger themselves into a fucking seizure than making everyone either look like boxes, turds or melting wax lumps with shitty color composition thrown about.

The art style of the Jem comic honestly doesn't bother me since some of it uses concepts the creator of the original show wanted to put in (Jetta being black and Techrat being androgynous based off Boy George.) Even Stormer's design, which gained quite some controversy, isn't too bad in my eyes. Not to mention Sophie Campbell is genuinely good and can pull off diverse designs very well.

That said Meredith was just downright awful. It had less to do with the designs and more of how sloppy and lazy her art was. Thank God they replaced her for the last arc and got someone good.

Sorry for diging this old bit up but it strikes a massive chord in a lot of issues I have with how a lot of publishers and animations are jumping TOO FAST in trying to employee 'diverse' artist. I've followed Campbell's works for YEARS and I was MASSIVLY excited when they got the Jem comics and yes, YES I do enjoy her work because Campbell can fucking draw. If you go back to a lot of their older post, podcast and blogs, she would often come down on herself HARD about not being able to draw but when you saw her work, especially her non-digital work, you'd just want to SLAP her for being so gloomy. Campbell can draw but a lot of the other people in the Jem comic?

I decided to pick up the TPBs because the shops around me were wonky on how they wanted to sell single issues so I could never get them in order. Book 1 is my favorite but when I saw the following books I really didn't know what I saw. I should have known better than to think Campbell would be given the WHOLE BOOK BY HERSELF (she has her own work at the moment so taking on all of this would be insane) but outside of her and one other artist whos name escapes me, the rest is just...well it goes from 'Cute' to 'WHY?!'

There are two artists that I dislike, one being someone who over-inks the line work to death with MASSIVELY thick lines that they're trying to pass off as brush-strokes and another who I can only describe as making the characters look like giant-headed aliens with bodies made of wax that are melting as they talk. Overall Campbell and otherartistwhosnameIwishIcouldrememberbutamtootiredtofindthebookorlookituprightnow ARE the perfect people for the comic but it would be wishful thinking to have them carry the whole thing on their own. I honestly cringe when I saw the melty alien art when I was at the shop because my brain could not figure out what was going on. It didn't help that the color choices for said issue were bad as well. It was....so orange and red and then they dropped in all those light tones for hair and coupled with the bad bodies it was the weirdest shit I had ever seen and not in a good way.

How can I really put it? The two artist know how to get the 'diversity' thing down as well as nailing their own style down perfectly because they made up their minds on what they wanted to do long ago. Like I said, Sophie has ALWAYS had that unique flare about her work and that's been going on for YEARS. This isn't something she just did for the Tumblr points. The shit work just looks like they're trying hard to appease that crowd and due to it it comes off looking very typical, bland, and the only memorable thing about it is how bad it looks and not in that 'so bad it's actually cool' way. It's just 'so bad, please stop trying to pander'

Also, what the fuck is this thing with massive chins? People can argue that Roxy got hit hard with square chin syndrome but I keep noticing this thing with 'diverse' artist drawing women with manly chins, something that actually doesn't happen as often as they screech about. In the end, they just create really campy looking dudes with thin bodies and it just looks laughable to AWFUL.

We can always count on Tumblr to exploit something, even if it's a joke or not. And I use the desktop as I don't feel like fucking up my phone with an app that my friends can't even get to work. HAHAHAH HOLY SHIT! This is another style I never really got and even when I tried to emulate it back when I first came on the Tumblz I couldn't nail it. I'm guessing it's some attempt at cross-hatching to create shading and texture but what it looks like is that this kid...adult....midget person is suffering from the worst case of smoker's skin I have ever seen. It doesn't create a texture more-so than WRINKLES and those lips. MY GOD THOSE LIPS.

One of the double-edge swords that have come from this sudden uprise of 'We have to draw these minority characters to love their features!' movement is that they're complete shit at drawing said features. Why the fuck do they always draw full lips the (|) way? Just line and then those two half circles? No one even attempts at drawing different LIP SHAPES because, ya know, those exist. All us darkies don't have the same God damn lip shapes nor do they all look like we got stung in the face by wasps.

Again, for people who claim so hard to be diverse they aren't too diverse when it comes to drawing. They all do the same shit.

At this point I don't even fucking care. Tumblr, SJWs, and others who wallow around in this shit have made the concept of 'representation' so convoluted and complicated I sigh in relief when I see media and shows who don't swallow this kool-aid and just make characters that are GOOD, not ones that are made just to show off to the LAST group of people you should be attempting to pander to ie, Tumblr.

Aside from that we all know they don't fucking care. The way they treat anyone who is actually gay, trans and so on is fucking disgusting.

Here's some story time so sit down.

Spoiler: This is a long ass post about being stuck in the Tumblr/SJW art deluge

Around the turn of the decade (2010) is when I got onto Tumblr and I mostly got on based on finding out it was the source of finding some screen shots of shows I like and all that. It was also the first real introduction I had to SJWs but being new to the concept and all to my mind these were 'mah people' ie, the writers and artist who were Black and so on who had a platform to share our work and not 'suffer' as they always throw that around. As someone who works on my own shit, my work has always been 'global'/adventure oriented meaning I like to have characters from a variety of places so the idea of 'inserting' characters was never new to me because I had always done it. Getting back on point though, the SJW art scene on Tumblr had really pulled me in and my naive mind at the time thought this was 'sharing', mostly attempts to show people that your leads didn't have to be White to be cool (Well, golly fucking gee. Not like there were already shows that made this point clear and better, RIGHT?) Around the same time, a CERTAIN massivly popular show based on a property from the 80s came out and everyone got into it, myself included. People on Tumblr were drawing the humanizations for it and then-

The shit started to happen.

Wanna make this clear right now; while doing this shit I did legit run into a lot of racist and creepy people trying to shut a lot of of artist down and if anything that was the shit that got me made, mostly the implications of race=personality types and so on but that's not the meat to this. What got crazy was how long I was spending debating how 'better' these characters would be if they were certain races and what not and yes, I was propped up and enabled by SJWs who would parade and shout from their accounts how they were anti-White/CiS/whatever they claimed to be the default. It would continue and continue and more art would be pumped out but the point where I realized how stupid this was happened when a certain episode of the show came out that sent so many in a fury over how 'abelist' it was. What resulted was a lot of fall out from people I had followed and thought were my friends because they went on a massive warpath and suddenly the things we were doing, 'sharing' art, stopped being fun and the whole thing revealed to it how much of a massive pile of ego-building white knighting all of this was. Eventually I just dropped out of the scene and went back to doing things simply because I like to because building Tumblr fans is the worst thing you can do for yourself. Some might ask 'But isn't it building a base?'

No, it's not because this is the reason why. The mere moment an event pops up and your reaction towards it isn't shown in an obsessive manner, your fans can turn into enemies and fucking eat you alive. It's not so much a manner of former fans thinking shit is lame but rather they will try to find any means of ruining your life over the most dumbest shit possible and I saw that happen with the show I mentioned as in they were sending DEATH THREATS to the voice actress over this dumb event.

Tumblr or SJWs as a whole don't understand how diversity works, neither with redraws or their own characters because they want two things out of it. They want the worship and popularity that comes from drawing a character that isn't White and they want the feeling in knowing that somehow because of that they're suddenly a groundbreaking creator because NO ONE has ever made a non-White, non-CIS character EVER BEFORE. As so many people have said in this thread, they don't embrace people but fetishize over them. Its a fetish because they can not see past the persons' outward appearance and comments like 'I fixed them' after adding on a ton of shit only shows it further. You are (and your characters) are not 'pure' or 'real' enough unless they are able to tack on whatever pet issues and things they can, in the end resulting in an amalgamation of physical traits and not much of a person within it to do anything else. It's visually pleasing to them because they can get off on the fact that they believe they have created something worth being praised over and that the poor underrepresented POCs/Minorities will be singing their name in praise. Why do you think SJWs get pissed off when their target audience rejects them? Because it shows to them that they have been denied that dick-sucking/pussy fingering reward they desire. They aren't in it for the true representation (if you can call it that); it starts and ends with THEM, no one else.

And I am not going to lie; the Black artists I have met who are deep in the SJW well are some of the biggest assholes I have ever fucking met. They're dismissive as fuck, rude as hell and they gleefully talk down do you if you're not Black or a 'passing' minority. One person I used to follow made salty ass comics about dealing with White people and it was the most stereotypical shit ever and a lot of 'Things that never happened for 1000 Alex shit' Angry looking Black chicks telling badly drawn White chicks to check their privilege, the 'Don't touch my hair' thing that doesn't happen as often as they cry about and just your basics over-glorified Tumblr art. They come to the site because they know they're protected no matter how awful they are and when I hear they DON'T have work in the industry I suddenly realize why and not just due to competition. They link their Tumblrs on their resumes and post ALL THIS SHIT about hating people, their potential co-workers, and so on so they advertise RIGHT THERE why they shouldn't be hired. And these are places that aren't Marvel or CN. These are places who know the risk of hiring people like this and don't want to take the chance of creating an ACTUAL toxic environment.

THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T USE A TUMBLR AS AN ART GALLERY ON YOUR RESUME and din't fucking believe anyone who says you HAVE to have one in order to set up an online portfolio. That's bullshit and there are better free sites that you can use to build up your portfolio.

Seriously, I can go on about how shit SJWs are at understanding cultures, their strange obsession with the hijab and how they can't color pick for dark skin characters worth a shit. It says something when my Black ass wants to slap the shit out of some kid who makes all these based assumptions on personalities based on the skin color of characters. I hate that. I fucking HATE that but this 'spoiler' has gone on too long but you know my story now. SJWism kills creativity because the end goal isn't to be creative. It's all about getting your ego stroked. Once you hit that peak where you have people following you, you get the idea that you don't have to improve or you don't have to experiment. Someone said it best further back in the thread but Tumblr is a form of uniformity in of itself despite the arguments against it. They're terrified of change and differences in art hence why nearly all of the art shared in this thread LOOKS EXACTLY THE FUCKING SAME despite being done by different people. There is such a thing as a 'style', a movement you can say that happens in time but the best artists were able to work in this and still have their work easily told a part. You can't with Tumblr art because everyone forces each other to stay within a realm or face the threat of being labeled horrible or not have your work noticed.
