So, I got to see Taylor Tomlinson live. In general, I find her pretty funny, but if there's a reference to Trump in her set (pretty rare), to white men (rare) or queerness in her life (more frequently), it just lands with a thud, at least to me. Tomlinson is bisexual, and apparently all of her siblings are queer. She is also from California, so do the math on that.
Her latest tour incorporates people texting in responses to a predetermined set of questions. Two of them are simple, stupid shit like, "when did you come out" and "what was your queer awakening". It comes across more as "shout what cartoon character or fictional character gives you the warm and fuzzies in your pants", because that's apparently what determines that you're queer. None of it was funny. It was more "let's just talk about being queer" and in the service of clapter.
She revealed her own "queer awakening", recorded when she was 4 years old. Apparently the fawn from Bambi makes her feel like (I swear I'm not making this up) "a hot dog in a pan". As if a fucking four year old understands sexual arousal and isn't saying stupid shit because that's what four year olds do.
Like I said, I find her funny, but it's when she's clearly playing into some leftist talking points, it just rolls right into cringe territory for me.
I have a feeling she's going to go downhill, honestly, and that makes me sad. She was doing banter with her opening act and there was a riff the guy did about how she and her father will never reconcile, and it was a very "brotherly" joke for him to make. I kind of figured she was making jokes about her father in her routine because they mostly got over shit, but more and more it looks like she's dragging her daddy issues into her 30's, and coupled with all the kids being queer, it almost seems exploitative, like now she's just roasting him and he has no space to defend himself.
