Chapelle got big because "killin' them softly" was legit funny and that let to chappelle show. but i remember people complaining that Dave would get up on stage and be too high to do shit in 2004,2005. I cant remember if it was chappelle or mitch hedberg that did a show laying on the ground rambling. chappelle was definitely a specials only comedian, comparef to patrice whos live shit was good.

on a side note, Comedy clubs are rip offs with the overprice drinks and shitty bar food. paying for the privilege to get fleeced by the 2 drink mininums and be a canned laughter machine. I've been to some that'll kick you out for booing or heckling a shitty comic.

Bill Hicks was a 90's liberal: nothing more. Yes, he was a "le heckin edgy boi" back in an era when being edgy meant bashing the religious right and muh fundies. Hicks' entire shtick was bashing religion and American culture. He was essentially a Redditor before Reddit. I know so many people IRL who took this guy's routines as gospel and always quoted his takes on Christianity to makes themselves sound smart.

Personal anecdote here: when I was old enough to drink in the 2000's, I went to some pretentious nightclub that had TVs near the seats. The main bartender was some hipster douche who would play Michael Moore movies and Bill Hicks routines on the TV screens. One time at the bar I ended up watching an entire Bill Hicks biographical documentary in its entirety. It was some comedy special narrated by likewise edgy 90's liberal comedians like Janine Garafalo, where they talked about his career and tragic death by highlighting his clips and giving commentary on his comedy style. The main focus of the theme of the video was how Bill Hicks had a hateboner for Christianity and American culture -- which back then, made him a vanguard for free speech and anti-establishmentism. This caused him to get heckled and booed off stage in American comedy shows, thus he would move to Europe where he found a new audience and became a superstar by using the same shtick that drew the ire of American audiences. The video essentially said, "In America, Bill Hicks was an outcast for his outspoken criticism of religion and dumb Americans -- but in Europe, people were smarter and enlightened enough to understand him better."

Then during the credits of the biography, the video played Rage Against the fucking Machine as a means to frame Bill as being a true counterculture rebel who raged against the machine by making fun of Jesus whilst taking drags of cigarettes.

I've only ever seen a handful of his routines, thought they were mundane and pseudo-intellectual at best, and definitely raised an eyebrow on his remarks about sex with underage girls. One of his comedy bits in the 80's openly advocates for murdering teen popstar Tiffany and then makes references to watching her have sex with other teen pop icons. Again, the guy was Reddit before Reddit. If he were still alive today, he would have 100% been a White Dude for Harris.

EDIT: I fucking forgot that Bill Hicks condoned gay and trans soldiers in the armed forces before that was even a thing! I remember watching one of his bits where he said something along the lines of, "I don't care if you're gay, straight, or trans: anyone who's dumb enough to enlist the Army deserves to get killed in combat equally."

its not even that, all it took was people questioning the material, no one questioned that "white middle class bankers" stuff from Carlin when it came out and its only through 4channers mocking their liberal bullshit have people turned Hicks/Carlin/Stanhope into persona non grata online.

It also has to do with culture as well, it was way easier to get away with never making jokes or points about non-whites or trans people because they were under everyones radar in pop culture before the 2010s.

Doug Stanhope was in his 50s before he met his first black person. thats how lucky liberals got to be in life. Hicks never really saying a non-liberal opinion probably made sense in the Reagan south, but there's also a reason Hicks never moved to bigger markets like LA or NYC, he wouldn't be able to get away with never pointing out the absurdity of blacks, Hicks' best friend in the texas comedy scene Sam Kinison went off on blacks and hip hop and that combined with his persona is why he's not given the praise Hicks gets despite a lot of similar material with a different persona attached to it. Hicks was too much of a coward to try his comedy in any major city which is why he was a road comic and then fucked off to europe. even Boston would have knocked his viewers right out of him

I'll give him credit he's good at telling a story and can occasionally throw in an okay quip. But his material seems to just be telling these long stories with some talking down to white people peppered in, as well as some "wypipo amirite"s thrown in there.
