I must say that I'm loving Ruby and Sapphire's relationship. I'll admit that the cynical part of me was worried that having a same sex couple on a kids show might end up being gimmicky as if the show was trying to appear progressive instead of developing an actual relationship (I thought the same thing of Legend of Korra's same sex couple). Road Trip challenged my thoughts. And this episode completely destroyed them. Ruby and Sapphire's backstory was incredible, as well as their character development.
The art in this episode was completely gorgeous too. I love how they kept all the homeworld gems mysterious. And Rubies are the cutest thing ever.
Another thing I realized while watching this episode is that all the main gems are misfits from their own species. Amethyst is way smaller than she's supposed to be. Pearl pretty much belongs to the slave class. Garnet is considered an abomination because she's a fusion. And Steven most likely counts because I don't think homeworld gems would think very highly of a hybrid.
Well, after the latest episode aired, I feel that it was a bit lacking. Like, it had a lot to say, but too short a time period to say it in. It generally felt kind of rushed in my opinion.
Especially concerning Ruby and Sapphire's relationship. Like, unless I missed something, they just kind of abruptly decided that they liked one another. And since fusion is arguably gem sex, it kinda comes across as "we fucked once, let's stay together forever!"
Though, they could be planning on revealing more throughout the week, so I guess we'll see.
I really liked this episode, specifically with the art direction of the backgrounds and the little song. I enjoy the demo version more simply because of Sugar's motherly voice, though
I've liked how they're doing the Ruby and Sapphire relationship. It doesn't seem really forced at all, and we'll probably see them having more arguments like in Keystone Motel to flesh out their characters, but the one thing I noticed is that in Love Letters, Garnet says "Love at first sight doesn't exist. Love takes time, and love takes work.", and yet that's sorta what it seemed like here. Ruby bumps into Sapphire, speaks to her a bit and finds out that Sapphire's physical form will break, and afterwards when the fuse and escape, she sees Sapphire's eye and falls in love with a fireboner.
Also was half expecting Rose to punch Garnet in the face and say "Welcome to earth!" Will Smith style

I feel like that might be a theme of future episodes then. Like by the voice acting it sounded like Ruby and Sapphire are pretty young, so maybe it's portrayed as like a puppy love sort of thing but then over the course of the time on Earth Garnet (or Ruby and Sapphire) has to deal with "how does this shit actually work"... I get the feeling this episode wasn't all there was to it.

Like others here, I enjoyed the latest episode a lot, but I don't have much to say other than re-hashing what others have said. However...
I think you may have missed some visual clues to what was going on with Garnet this episode. A fusion isn't "gem sex", it's the embodiment of the relationship of the gems involved. Garnet's first fusion was stable, but it wasn't exactly "all there". There were still blotches of Ruby's red and Sapphire's blue everywhere, bits of Sapphires dress and bits of Ruby's biketard still visible in her outfit. She wasn't deformed, but you can tell right away that they haven't gotten their relationship fully together quite yet.
These past two episodes have been nothing but fluff. The first one was basically just a visualization of a story we already knew (padded with a few new details in the beginning, I guess), and nothing fucking happened in the second one. This show brought me joy for years, I don't want to give up on it now!

Well, the promo for the week shows her lunging at the other gems in the robot she built a few episodes ago, and them escaping and talking about going to a temple, so that's more or less confirmed already.
