SUV hits crowd at Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, BC​

An SUV has been driven into a crowd of people at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, B.C., according to witnesses, causing an unknown number of casualties.

The incident happened at around 8 p.m. on Saturday when the vehicle plowed into people attending the event, which is an annual celebration honoring the Philippines’ first national hero.

Footage from the scene showed multiple victims on the ground, some of whom appeared dead or seriously injured. The exact number of casualties was not immediately clear.

A large number of emergency services are at the scene. It’s unclear whether the crash was an accident or intentional. Police did not immediately respond to a request for information.

The Lapu Lapu festival was taking place in the area of E 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street.

My brother witnessed the scene unfold. He hasn't returned home yet, but called saying he phoned the police after witnessing people get run over, he said he saw people flying over top the car. I hope he is okay

My question is why there was no currently known Police presence at the entrances/exit. Pretty much always have some sort of police security detail for these events as they direct traffic and sus out the crowd of people going in to said event. There might have been some patrols on the inside but the entrances to the event are the most effective way to scan the crowd for stuff as everyone is going through those points unless they sneak in. Also I head they normally use dump trucks or large vehicles for roadblocks but apparently they didn't have them from what I heard from news reports. Kinda weird they don't use portable concrete blocks/proper barricades and just park a fucking truck instead.

“The driver of the SUV was taken into custody and was telling bystanders he was “sorry.” Sources say he appears to have been suffering from mental-health issues.”

Fire at the SUV as it plows into the crowd? This wasn't a armed attack just a SUV of peace. Once it gets going there really isn't much to be done till it stops.

I mean just from the videos the earlier police reports were just completely off. Way more than 8 injured just from the amount of people in the videos. The question now will be whether the Canadian justice system works or will they let a guy that has potentially killed/injured 30+ people free from consequences because "muh mental health". If it does happen I would hope the public would rain hell on the everyone involved in the whole trial and punish the people who have fucked so many peoples live up by withholding justice on thousands of other cases.

Charles Whitman also had mental problems which drove him to do his shooting.

Death toll is now up to 11, likely to rise as many are in critical condition. "Dozens" more injured at 9 hospitals.
Still not disclosing name or motive as they need to file charges before it can be revealed, but he has a "significant" history with police related to mental health issues.

Not sure why police said this, it is not true that most of the festival was on school grounds. The concert, basketball tournament, and vintage clothing market were, but there were tents set up in the alley behind Fraser St. from 43rd Ave all the way to 48th or 49th Ave. Maybe the city didn't expect such a large crowd. It would have been hard to estimate since this is only the second year this festival has happened.
