SUV hits crowd at Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, BC​

An SUV has been driven into a crowd of people at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, B.C., according to witnesses, causing an unknown number of casualties.

The incident happened at around 8 p.m. on Saturday when the vehicle plowed into people attending the event, which is an annual celebration honoring the Philippines’ first national hero.

Footage from the scene showed multiple victims on the ground, some of whom appeared dead or seriously injured. The exact number of casualties was not immediately clear.

A large number of emergency services are at the scene. It’s unclear whether the crash was an accident or intentional. Police did not immediately respond to a request for information.

The Lapu Lapu festival was taking place in the area of E 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street.


About 30 police cars, fire trucks, ambulances have gone by on West 41st heading east in the last 10 minutes. Anyone know what’s going on? Seems big. They’re continuing to pass every 2 minutes or so.

My brother witnessed the scene unfold. He hasn't returned home yet, but called saying he phoned the police after witnessing people get run over, he said he saw people flying over top the car. I hope he is okay

Of course, when I responded to her with "well, I drove here in a car that I could use to run over a crowd of people", she couldn't even whip out the "well, guns are made to kill people" which, if she did, I could have replied to with "no, as the presence of a firearm is enough of a deterrent to avoid such violence" and "there are more deaths from cars than firearms". I should also mention she was a fucking jeet with a thick accent I could barely understand half the time, but that's another topic.

Anti-gun people have always really struggled with the car comparison. Cars are also extremely capable weapons which have practical utility, it's just the utility they actually care about (transportation, rather than hunting or self-defense). That's the main thing about it, anti-gun people just don't care about the actual utilities guns provide, all they see is risk. But they're blind to the same qualities in other objects.

More libs are starting to be "anti-car" though...

Kind of surprised no one else brought up that it might be an Islamist attack, especially as cars of peace are something of a favorite of theirs. For those that don't know, the Phillipines has a Muslim ethnic group in the South called the Moro, who have formed numerous militant Islamic jihadist groups in the county's South-West that have been fighting an on and off insurgency against the government in Manila since the 1960's.

However assuming the guy in the video did actually do it, while he definitely looks Filipino he doesn't strike me much as the jihadist type, as usually after they've bravely slain the 3 year old enemy of Allah they tend to start screaming Islamadamadingdong shit rather than cowering by a fence while apologising with a quivering lip.

Definitely doesn't look Moro. As some people have said before, the Moro are more likely to stay in Mindanao, and if they do migrate it's usually either Malaysia/Indonesia (both nearby countries with Muslim majorities), or the Middle East.
