The NBA Thread

Wew lad!

I don't really like this guy because he is a "current NBA is the most talented it's ever been"-fag but this video is good because it confirms my biases:
It kind of busts the myth that basketball is soft now and the 90s players were so much tougher, but it's just gone in reverse. Back in those days, you really had to work for your two points. Now the defender is really handicapped in what they can do with the offensive player. It has a crazy amount of vision of blatant offensive fouls (and travels but that's old news) going uncalled. Puts the modern scoring boom into an interesting context.

It's interesting how OKC has been 2-3 since going 24-1, with two of those losses to San Antonio.

The one hole in their game seems to be really big centers. It seemed they matched up poorly against Denver last year in the playoffs because Jokic is like a hundred pounds heavier than Chet. Their best lineups play Chet at center, they can't reasonably play him at center against Jokic or Wemby for extended stretches of time. SA then can prey on the double bigs lineup being worse offensively, while being able to put pressure on whatever OKC defender they want with their movement and anomalous center.

If they are smart they will worry less about breaking the win/loss record and more about conserving their energy for the playoffs. They got pushed pretty hard last year.

2-4 now since SGA decided to open his mouth lol

Nikola Jokic got hurt against the Heat for what seems like the first time ever, went out with a hyperextended knee at halftime. The scores were tied at that point, the Heat ended up winning by 24 points and Jokic still led the Nuggets in scoring. Surely this is the definition of MVP? Shai is great but he routinely sits out 4th quarters and the Thunder are fine, the Nuggets would drop about 10 positions in the standings if Jokic went out.

Shai sits those quarters out because they're ahead by so much it doesn't matter. He's kinda their entire offensive system, though. When you're already up by 30 you can just bet on the god tier defense holding it down, but they do have real problems creating without him that became apparent against the Spurs. It's something I forgot to mention about Wemby: He can deny Shai's ability to get to the rim, and between that and the Spurs guards being really athletic and really confident the team's prepared to harass Shai all game while forcing OKC to beat them with shooting, which they can't do.

Shai's team overall is certainly better than Jokic's, but the "Jokic no help" thing isn't true this year. These Nuggets are good. Jamal Murray should probably be an all-star, Aaron Gordon is in the running for best non-star in the league and if he was healthier probably could have made an all-defense team or two. He can also shoot 3s now for some reason. Christian Braun and Cam Johnson are solid starters, the Nuggets have an actual bench now, and Val as their backup big has been doing well. What is true is that all the other starters are hurt lol. After tonight it's just Jamal Murray who's healthy of the starters. They've got a 2 way G-Leaguer (who tbf has actually been playing really well) starting because of all the injuries. No team is going to be any good with 4 of their 5 starters gone. Nuggets without Jokic would usually be a lottery team, but I think this year if he was their only one missing they'd "only" be mid.

I don't think there's a clear front runner for MVP among either of them at the moment. The Thunder aren't gonna break the all time win record and have that boost, and Jokic is actually somehow hurt for once. I'd go Jokic myself and Giannis Wemby Luka aren't gonna play enough games to make it not a 2 man race, but I think it's feasible that as the season progresses a case becomes clearer for either one of them.

Still have Jokic and Giannis as being the better players than Shai though.

This is a Youtuber that makes critiques of NBA coaching by rolling game tape and screaming his head off at all the mistakes and poor strategy he sees, and gives his videos outrageous titles like 'JASON KIDD BELONGS IN NORTH KOREAN PRISON FOR THIS COACHING JOB VS THE LAKERS'. I always assumed it was at least part satire.

Out of nowhere he goes live with a face reveal last night - which I don't think he ever does - and goes on a 90 minute rant about how generally clueless the NBA is and how nobody associated with it deserves their job, all NBA-related shows and podcasts are garbage, and he (or "we"; his viewership?) could win the title with the worst team in the league, interspersed with random stuff like giving out his real name, history, experiences, high school crushes he still thinks about, at around 39 minutes randomly brings up how he's lost interest in women and prefers porn, etc. Funny as hell, I can now add "pigeon-brained idiot" and "goblin terrorist" to my insult bank, but also really strange and manic.

More satire, or actual psychotic break? You tell me. I've only watched half of it so far, I gotta go do shit.

Do you watch the sport? The Nuggets, a team that is allegedly good, just gave up 147 points to the HEAT last night. The refs no longer call any offensive fouls, and because they don't? Nobody on the floor knows how to play ball anymore. its just dudes standing around the basket while the offensive players can charge right in to defenders blatantly and get their and 1. It's worse than Dwyane Wade drop kicking Mavericks in the NBA finals. Traveling is at its worst, carrying is at its worst, fucking 6 step gathers, offensive players are turning in to the defender and getting fouls even though that is and always has been an offensive foul. It's shit right now.

Players want to win and they'll just play to whatever the refs are giving them.

This isn't anything new. Back in the 90s Wizards and Jazz used to play zone even though it was illegal defense. Hand checking was also illegal but was never called. Illegal screens were called so you never saw those, and so on.

Now we're entering the era of offense never getting called for anything because Silver wants high scoring games, likely due to their ratings problem.

Using the Nuggets giving up a lot of points to the Heat when they now have no starters except for Jamal Murray is a bit odd. Their defense with their starters in is actually pretty decent this year, of course when all their best players are hurt they play worse.

I only picked them because I know a Nuggets fan and saw the score this morning. It could be any team all year. I saw a stat yesterday where 41 year old Jordan had a better defensive rating than last year's DPOY. There's no defense anymore, not because players don't want to play defense, but because David Stern's rectal polyp thinks teams scoring 150 points outside of high school is something fans want to watch. I don't, but maybe people really enjoy Luka looking like a bullfighter as someone runs by him to the rim. Ole!

Younger viewers engage with the NBA primarily through watching highlights on social media. Silver even acknowledged this. More scores and more possessions mean more chances of highlights you can post.

Then eventually maybe you can hook them on sports gambling and at that point they're a captive audience and the on-court product doesn't matter.

I do believe we have officially reached that point last season, and the ratings showed it. Instead of creating environments where younger audiences have to pay attention, they choose to instead continue the fucking mindrot. Lawyers and Jews fucking up every aspect of entertainment because of fucking TIKTOK.

Trae Young just got traded to the Washington Wizards for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert
