The Sims

I used to play all sorts of terrible psychological games with them in Sims 2. I used to make a 'Big Brother' house with the maximum number of sims all with ridiculously exaggerated personalities and seal it off from outside. I'd use the money cheat to make sure they A) Were fed and B) Had EVERYTHING they could possibly want. Then I minimally interacted with them and just watched them tear themselves apart and lose their little simulated minds being stuck in a house with a bunch of people they were either fucking, hating or hate fucking. Once my house was too harmonious so I made a stupidly desirable male and female sim, had them individually seduce every sim in the house THEN marry one another with all the housemates present. Shit was chaos. Oh yeah I also once made a Josef Fritzl style dungeon and lured a non household teen girl into it, locked the door and tried to keep her alive as long as possible.

I should not be allowed to play this game.

Oh, please. I've made full-blown death camps before, just because I could.

It's something every Sims player goes through at some stage: they get that destructive itch and start discovering all the different ways Sims can suffer and die. Then they film it and post it on YouTube:

Does anyone miss The Sims: Pets ? the last installment was almost 12 years ago. I kind of miss that subseries. I liked how a sense of responsibility was added to the gameplay with those titles other than the typical making sure your character goes to work, eats, and showers etc.

Sims 2 is the last great Sims game. It started getting more kiddify after that.
i liked 3 for how ambitious it was trying to make an open world sims game but it's realistic graphics have aged badly. 4 as a result of its stylization made it age slightly better, though it really should increase the texture resolution and poly count on some items.

I wouldn’t consider 3 kiddy. You could send and receive nude/woo hoo texts to other sims and bachelor parties were a thing.
There’s also this trailer that basically parodies all those viagra commercials.

The thing that kills 3 for me is the lack of optimization, bugginess, and inability to manage multiple households. There are some things I like about it, like the trait-based personality system and better CAS features, but everything else about it makes me want to just stick to 1 and 2.

The first Sims game will always be my favorite in the series, despite how limited the gameplay might be compared to the others. You really need a good number of the expansion packs to get the most out of it, but there's just something about the style of the first game that sets it apart from the others. It's like a jarring world that oscillates between idyllic and horrifying, and the calming soundtrack (by far the best in the series) somehow harmonizes with the chaos beautifully.

the sims 4 is truly a tragic tale, the target audience completely shifted its now targeted exclusively at women (there were always women sims players but still, everything about 4 is fucking cringey)

EA also went all-in on targeting the rainbow crowd, with very blatant additions such as pronouns, gender customization, and even including the "chestfeeding" trend with the added lactation option. I'm not sure if other games, or modern media, added or considered adding "chestfeeding" as a thing.

This has that eerie sims 1 vibe of being entirely empty and the gameplay immensely simple. Which also underlines how just.. devoid of purpose the genre is. Sims has that stylized charm, all the competitors and "sims killers" look like glorified tech demos. Or that one korean one where everyone, even townies, look like a kpop main character.

Ive never really considered Sims competitors before, honestly surprising no one has tried until very recently, I know Paradox were developing one but those fucking faggots cancelled it, theres also another indie studio making one but they seem to be very leftist, it seems like most of these copy-cats go in with no plan despite the formula being easy.

There’s Inzoi, but:
1.) it has a couple pozzed elements already

2.) it might be horribly optimized to where if you don’t have a NASA computer from 3035, it doesn’t run well.

Lack of competition has really let them run wild.

Kinda wack how the impozzening of Sims has taken what was an all-white all-tumblr esque demographic; the girl third from left, and reduced and swapped it entirely with xe/xyms of color and other social grifters. Like even Sims isn't safe from having to appeal to a different audience from those who play the games, despite having the tightest fucking life-defining grip of "white western women who kinda game but not really". Even the general 'cozy' genre of indies with romance and farming is more or less diversified past the somewhat normalcy of Stardew.

yeah its fucking insane how bad its gotten, apparently they are re-releasing 1 and 2 on steam this week so at least theres solace there, EA has a cash-cow but for women now so dont expect anything good with any future content

I played a game of Sims 3 maybe 6 months ago and it occurred to me how much the game series is crippled by appealing primarily to women. Any other game series that has a bunch of one-game Andys playing it for 20+ years straight and you have so many reinventions and alternatives. Sims franchise you have the main game + cosmetics and sex mods. There's no serious, mature attempts to make open source Sims engines, or total conversion mods, or non-terrible Sims-likes. Compare this to something like TES and you have tons of options if you want to play a better looking and running Morrowind on a potato with new lands mods and major reworks to every in game system.

The Smooth Patch by LazyDuchess makes 3 bearable and so does NRASS mods.
