As I noted before, it probably is a carry-over from blogs or forums specifically for survivors or sexual assault. As these people migrated to Tumblr, which has a much broader scope of people it attracts, these people started up blogs doing the same thing and probably asked people who they followed to tag things. From there on out, it spread like a virus.
Yeah, I understand that was the way it came about. Here's an interesting article on the subject which also highlights the fact that this shit is becoming a problem at universities. TL;DR version: by putting trigger warnings on course materials, which a number of students demand, you effectively dictate to people what they should be offended by and so affect their analysis.

They should put the trigger warning right in the syllabus. If you don't like it, stay out of the class. If it's a required course, tough shit.

Thank you for showing me this article.

It's perfect and it's why I prefer not to put specific warnings for my own writing aside from "some fucked up shit happens."

#tw: pineapple cult initiation

Let's file that under "shit that totally happened, really, I swear".

EDIT: Oh god I've got a birthday hat what sorcery is this

Man I actually hope that happened, because it is the most wonderfully surreal image I've ever had put in my head. Plus that kid probably deserved to have pineapples thrown at them.

I recently took a course called "A History of Violence" in university. There was a trigger warning on the course pack that said that the course will have descriptions of violent events. Ya don't say.

I don't like to pull out my disabled card, because I know that there are people who have it so much worse than me, but I'm going to right here, because I think it will contribute to the discussion. All of these fucking morons are tagging these things that either nobody could be triggered by, or that only a vanishingly small part of the population could be affected by. Meanwhile, epileptics don't expect society at large to give us any special considerations beyond a few basic things like making sure that fire alarm strobes don't set off seizures. It's an actual condition that I have, and I wouldn't expect the media at large to make any special concessions to me, because it's my disability and I have to manage it. (I will make an exception for shows aimed at children, which are often tested to make sure that there's no danger to them, but that's because they CAN'T manage their disability, and a parent might not be around to deal with a problem.)
I've seen a few Tumblr blogs with things like repeating contrasting stripes as their background. In (admittedly extreme) cases, that could be all it takes to send someone into a potentially lethal seizure. But unless you're aiming your content at kids, you'll never see some epileptic bitching about it or demanding trigger warnings for things like that (although I have seen people claiming that people should post warnings above strobing .gifs that could affect people with higher seizure thresholds.) People with an actual life threatening condition don't whine, but all of these idiots whine about their bullshit and it just kind of pisses me off.

Triggered by pomegranates? That's a shame, pomegranates are delicious.

No really, I saw this once.

This character can't seem to get a break from the SJW side of Tumblr. It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad, and it didn't clog his tag.

People in particular are upset because his song in Dancing All Night references one of his murder victims (Konishi Mix).

I've also seen "tw: bananas." I kinda wanna know the story behind that one.
