I finished Rise of The Tomb Raider the other day.

Yes I know the Kaiser isn't an up to date gamer at all.

Absolutely loved it, vast improvement over the first one, no stupid/time waster character devices, the plot was strong and the story was compelling. It's a shame that there wasn't a bit more involved with the Undying Army and Jacob's backstory/motivations but it was a a solid 10/10 game for me. And I actually hated the original Tomb Raiders.

What it made me also remember was just how much fun Tomb Raider was aside from the dopey side characters and some poor plot points/writing and the never ending quick time events.

So why was the film adaptation so terrible? I'd really like to hear peoples thoughts on this, or was it just me being picky, but I though the film adaptation ultimately was underwhelming compared to the original IP?

I tend to go with the belief that film adaptions to videos games are largely shit and usually deviate from the original content the point where it's so far removed from what they wanted to adapt that they might as well have just made it a stand alone movie rather than a live action adaption. Don't get me started on the Silent Hill movies.

I agree they don't seem able to ever do any properties justice, and it's not like the film style can't support this genre of AAA games. The games themselves have brought in more cinematic elements in an attempt to improve narrative and story telling elements, so it's not like they shouldn't be able to use their own techniques in order to make a film that is passable.

The other thing I suppose, is that the IP really needs to put the foot down in terms of the adaptations being made. In the case of Tomb Raider, the supporting characters were shit and could be truncated down.

That said the film really only needed to follow the lead of the game to work well. Inexperienced Lara wants to live up to her dead fathers expectations, has to survive on a dangerous island and rescue her friend from being killed by the Solarii. (Trinity, etc.)

The exclusion of the Oni, and the undead Empress Himiko (Instead of botulism in a coffin) and the supernatural element, really didn't do the film any favors or justice. People don't mind supernatural elements making it into the story, Indiana Jones the prototypical character is based expressly on his coming into contact with other worldly items.

I've never seen the Silent Hill films, but I can imagine. Resident Evil films were always terrible, so it put me off watching most movie adaptations.

The Silent Hill series of games were amazing and the storytelling was very good in most of them. It was important because psychological horror games need to have really good writing and atmosphere to feel scary as opposed to other forms of horror that rely on shock value or grotesque/gory imagery to stimulate us (which tbh I'm not a fan of since gory more or less disgusts me physically than scare me). That being said, translating it into a movie wasn't exactly a well thought out idea. I could see the films being something akin to like a spiritual successor or being based on the games and not direct adaptions of the games, but treating them as loyal adaptions is kind of a stretch in my opinion.
They had some cameos, some of the monsters were there and objectively looking at the movie, if it was treated on it's own could potentially be decent movies. However, the Silent Hill fan in me couldn't help but nitpick certain things. That's probably my own problem but I feel like if something is going to be adapted that they should stay as close to the original source material as they can. I think the very last Silent Hill adaption was truly awful. If I remember correctly it was based on Silent Hill 3, the characters felt incredibly flat and I couldn't feel a thing for them, they introduced some dude there who somehow and mysteriously pops out of nowhere and suddenly he's a love interest despite him knowing the heroine for no more than 10 minutes and they slapped on some music from other Silent Hill games and said "Oh look how Silent Hill this Silent Hill movie is ooooo."

I don't know. I feel like you don't need to make a film adaption to popular games. It waters down how great the game/original content is, and comes off as some quick money making scheme to capitalize on a popular product to make quick money while producing a cheap sub par film, slapping the title of the series on it and calling it an "adaption".

ResetEra are upset at the developers of Ion Fury because they said some mean things

All the more reason to buy it

"I don't want potential scumbags to be supported and decided to dig further into their discord. Here I found that some of the devs appear to be transphobic "

Sums it up.

I decided to watch Until Dawn like a movie where everyone lived. Took 6 hours and I realized it didn't work well as a movie because of the episodic "LAST TIME ON UNTIL DAWN".
So there goes 6 hours of my life.
But it was still a nice watch while I did other things like cook and clean.

I thought that the visual aesthetics for the 1st movie (I only saw that one) were done by people who cared about the atmosphere for the most part. It was generally a competent movie, but the lack of original songs, as well as stupider story decisions hurt it. I don't understand why the movie people tell the creators to do stupid shit for mass audiences when it's not going to gross that much anyway.

Has anyone played "Observer", the "cyberpunk Horror" game starring Rutger Hauer? I need a break from cartoon-y games.
@Even Odder
Wow, every character in Horizon Zero Dawn is either boring or annoying. This is amazing.
I went in to that game really hoping for the best but its characters irritated me like a paper cut. I felt bad about stopping in the middle of it, but the Mary Sue bullshit was too strong with this one. I'm probably gonna force my way through the rest of it because I love apocalypse stories but damn, there's hardly anything loveable about 90% of the characters, protagonist included. Everyone is either smug or completely incompetent.

I've played it yeah. If you go to my profile I had a conversation with @Get Fisted about it. One of the last comments on my profile

Edit: if you haven't played Deus ex that's the first I'd recommend
