I like to pretend that I'd be well qualified to be a video game journalist because it somewhat justifies in my head the concept that I wasted so much time learning and obsessing over video games. So in the vein of a Larry Bundy style video here's FIVE VIDEO GAME FRANCHISES THAT HAVE GONE DORMANT AND SHOULD COME BACK!
Now I know what you're thinking, this is just another dork who wants to whine that Rockstar never made Bully 2. Well I want Bully 2 but the purpose of this is to point out that there are some lovely franchises that are rotting away and could spawn popular sequels. I'm certain that assuming they were well made any of these games would sell well.
5. Virtua Fighter - This is last on the list because sadly Fighting Games are a finicky genre in terms of commercial reception. Even the biggest name like Street Fighter can greatly under perform if the studio can't make the game very enjoyable. With that said Sega should respect their legacy as an Arcade giant by at least making a small scale sequel to Virtua Fighter. It was the first fighting game to have 3D Graphics and it was truly unique that the characters moved in a 3D Plane. Yu Suzuki designed an elegant system as Virtua Fighter only uses a D-Pad/Arcade Stick and Three Buttons making it very accessible to newbies but underneath it players had many attack moves at their disposal. The reason I feel Virtua Fighter didn't sustain popularity like Tekken or Street Fighter is that the series always rather lacked personality. If they make a new game they could add a fun story mode and they should use the Yakuza games as inspiration.
4, Advance Wars - Fire Emblem is super successful and that's what Intelligent Systems focuses their time on besides Paper Mario. Yet they have a fantastic sister series that hasn't seen a sequel in more than a decade. Intelligent Systems should just make another Advance Wars game, insert waifus into it like Fire Emblem and you'll make money. Also what would be cool is that Advance Wars has multiplayer, since it's turnbased you could develop an online mode where players can take their time and play multiple matches while they wait for their opponents to make their move. It would fill a nice strategic niche.
3. Mega Man X - Everyone loves Mega Man, people even buy poorly emulated collections of Mega Man. The mainline Mega Man series has been given 3 solid sequels that everyone liked. But you know what people like more than Mega Man? Mega Man X! It had better graphics, cool 90s designs, and great soundtracks. Yet the last Mega Man X game proper was released 15 years ago. There's little reason not to produce a Mega Man X9 game especially when 90s nostalgia is so high.
2. Wario - Mario is great, Mario deserves constant new sequels because it's more or less the one franchise that everyone should try once. But Nintendo has seemingly put Wario on the backburner only appearing in Party games now and that's a shame. The Gameboy Wario titles were some of the best original games on that platform. What appeals to me about Wario is that he's not the good guy like Mario, he's a fat, stupid, greedy, piece of shit. And with that creative freedom I think Nintendo could make a wickedly enjoyable sequel to the franchise.
1. Twisted Metal - What do all the little kids love now? Large Battle Royale Games where it's last man standing. What do kids also really love? Cars and car themed games like Rocket League is insanely popular. I'm baffled that Sony isn't making a new Twisted Metal where you could have 50+ Player Deathmatchs. Just don't let David Jaffe have total control or else he'll be edgy and make it Rated M. Maybe call it something else if you make it too kid friendly ala Fortnite my point is I know there's billions sitting there waiting for a Battle Royale Car Destruction game.
