Weight loss support thread

I've been going through a vicious cycle lately, of binging on very unhealthy foods, and fasting on every other occasion. At the moment, I stand at about 50-53 kg (112-117 lbs), but I feel like my weight doesn't really reflect the way I look. I'm not trying to lose weight so much as slim down physically. And despite what is commonly said (your body loses weight proportionately across your entire body), that doesn't seem to be the case.

24 hour fast and quitting soda again. Harass me if I fuck up.
Succeeded in a Monday 9am to Tuesday 9am 24 hour 0 calorie period. I haven't drank a carbonated beverage since that time. I will again be fasting after 9am tomorrow morning.

Giving up soda is a very good idea, fasting might not be, though. The body slows down its metabolism if there is a lack of fuel.

A piece of fruit or two might help out. I personally like grapefruits, and, since I live on my own, don't have to fight my dad over them.

By the way, diet soda doesn't help. Water would probably be a better, and cheaper option, too.

Metabolic processes are one of the most widely misunderstood phenomenon in the entire human body.

When I went from 210lb to 185lb, I ate 0.6kcal every other day and 2kcal on "off" days. The result is a healthy feeling of emptiness (a distinct lack of bloating you feel when you eat whatever you want) and no lack of energy.

Starvation is bad. Fasting is so in line with what we can handle as a human being, it's even a religious facet in Islam.

True, everyone is different in that respect. I feel sluggish and tend to go crazy if I don't at least have something in my system. Also, since I lift regularly, I can't afford not to eat.

I mean, I can understand going on a 24 hour fast once in a while, maybe, but it should not be a regular thing for anyone. It's just not healthy. You got anything going on for exercise/physical activity?

Just thought I'd post this here as it's been super helpful for me to keep track of what I eat and how much I work out. www.myfitnesspal.com It doesn't cost anything to use it on your pc and I have no need to add it to a smart phone. Most foods have already been inputted by other users so it's very easy to add exactly what you've been eating. I was overlooking calories in some of the drinks I had and other places so keeping it logged made a massive difference. You can also track your exercise as well which is working well for me.

At the moment I'm managing to maintain a steady weight loss of about 1.5lbs a week. It's probably going to slow down soon as I need to put on more muscle so my weight might be a bit off. Hope the link helps. :heart-full:

I find that app pretty annoying to use, at least in my experience. I don't know how to access the foods other people have already inputted, so that may be my problem. The barcode reader is super wonky, and in the case of eating at restaurants/homecooked foods, fairly useless. I do still use it on occasion, especially to roughly ratio how much I've eaten/how much I've burnt off.

Also, methinks I've lost a kilo, or so! Not really what I'm looking for (visible results), but it'll do.

I'm in the UK so maybe there are more British foodies on there. I haven't tried the scanning or appness of it. When I add a food I just use the search engine or input it myself if it's not on there. It's been pretty good for me using just the basic food and exercise diary and I lost another 1lb so far this week.

Well, I gained back most of what I lost. Without the summer heat, there's little to curb my appetite. I'm switching my diet around so that I eat more chicken, that way I can get protein without as much fat as other meats. I don't eat fish, so that's not an option for me.

I've had great success with the Paleo Diet.

Went from 225ish to 175ish in 8 months but it's haaaaaaaaard at first. But once you get used to it it becomes pretty easy. It's the first 12 days when you cut your carbs/sugars down and your body goes apeshit that really sucks. Once your past that it becomes pretty smooth.

No cheat days so no reasons to relapse just lots of solid food on a regular schedule. Some if my bros still fast once or twice month but I've never seen the need for it so YMMV.

if anyone's interested check out this site.

I had to visit my gp today so they weighed me and I'm down another 2lbs. I'm swimming a lot faster and it's definitely improved my mood.

I've been managing to maintain my weight loss by running regularly (I'm down to 160 lbs as opposed to my 280 lbs this time last year). I eat a 200-calorie 14g protein breakfast bar and take a multivitamin every morning, then I eat a chicken salad wrap and some chips or a veggie burger and an apple or avocado for lunch between 11 and 1. For dinner between 4 and 7, I have whatever sounds good, which is usually an italian sub or chicken fajitas. I always use the rule of thumb that if I'm going to eat something, choose whatever yields the most protein and the least fat for the calories , including with dessert, in which I would favour a cup of chocolate frozen yogurt or a fudge pop over a slice of blueberry pie or a single chocolate chip cookie.

Then I go to the gym at least 3 times a week and run 3 miles on a flat incline and then work on my back, legs and arms. I don't worry about reps, I just do as many as I can until I can't, rest for a minute, and then do another set until I can't anymore. I mostly use the back extension and the leg press, and then I use a pull-up bar with various hand positions and an assist pad for my arms, shoulders and chest. For the back extension, I always keep it at 15 lbs above my body weight so that I'm at least pressing my weight plus a little extra. I usually do 3 sets of chin-ups with 55 lbs assist (15 to 20 the first set, 6 to 12 the second set, 5 the third set), and then I do 1 set of 3 to 5 pull-ups.

I've been wanting to start up on running and working out again, but either college gets in the way or I get lazy and forget about it.

Any advice?

First off, college getting in the way is not an excuse. I have full-time courses, work 32 hours a week, and have a GF who is extremely demanding of my time, and I still find time to do a half-marathon training program. You're talking maybe an hour a day three or four days a week, including time to change clothes and shower, so it's only an excuse because you're letting it be one.

Second, depending on your current running ability, find something like a couch-to-5k training schedule (here's one: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml). Do it. It's only 3 days a week to get you up to 3 miles.

Third, my personal suggestion is not to do it on a treadmill, because treadmills are fucking boring. If your roads or weather are shit, you may not have much choice, but I definitely would not have been able to stick to my program on a treadmill. Also, for road running, I suggest trying to do it without music. I used to think music helped me run, but I tried without for safety (so I could hear cars coming) and found I actually wanted to go longer without.

Fourth, it may be easier if you find a race you want to do so you have an exact goal to start working towards while you build up the habit. Doesn't have to be (and really shouldn't be) a marathon, maybe a 5k fun run or something.

Wow, looks like I have been making too big of a deal out of college then. As for my running ability, I'm able to run a 5K without slowing down to walking speed, and I usually warm up and stretch before and after doing so. Most of my running has always been during the Summer mornings ever since graduating high school.

And I agree, I cannot stand treadmills. Walking on them is fine, but I always feel restricted running on one IMO. Running through my neighborhood is just much more fun.

To join the Army I need to be at most 200lbs, be able to to a 16 minute 2 mile run, 35 push ups in 2 minutes, and 47 sit ups in 2 minutes. As of today I am 260lbs and have no idea how many push ups/sit ups I can do in 2 minutes and can't run 2 miles period.

I have plotted out a 2 mile run near my house and to start off I will just be walking that 2 miles every other day and doing push ups and sit ups every day. I will slowly add on the running until I can at least jog the whole 2 miles, then from then on out try to get it down to 16 minutes for 2 miles. I'm giving myself a year until I try to enlist in Basic Training so hopefully in a year I will be able to accomplish these goals and bring my weight down to 200lbs.

Is there any advice for getting rid of abdominal fat and love handles? Like any exercises based around the abdominal region?

Just wanted to check in and see how you're doing and the progress you've made. I was in the Navy until my contract was up in February and my niece is in DEP for the Navy. She's also doing some training to be in regs for boot. Are you in DEP too?
