Weight loss support thread

Due to some health issues I won't disclose, I started dieting. Low carb diet. I started seeing a Dietitian and they suggested adding more carbs into my diet. I'm under 150 a day, give or take.

When I last went to the doctor's last month, I was 280. I'm now around 276-274. My scale is a bit old and not accurate. Will give me different weights between back to back immediate usage.

Not to make it overly religious, but over lent I decided to change up how I ate. I've been doing 48 hour fasts every week. Tonight I become catholic and I've lost 35 pounds within these 40 days. It's kinda shocking how simple yet difficult it's been. I've been a listener of MATI for years and I can now say Jersh was right, calorie counting works.

"Tonight [you] became catholic?" Is there something about Lent I don't understand as a recovering fedora wearing atheist dipshit?

But yeah 48 hour fasts are nice. Try and extend it to 72 once in a while if you can -- the Autophagy that kicks in around really did a number on how I felt, reset my lower back pain and allergies.

He means he got received into the Catholic Church (either by baptism or christmation(though I dont know if the Caths do christmations))

Use some of the money you’re not spending on troughs of food to buy a new scale, fatso

Very interesting video.
My understanding is that "starvation mode" is a myth, but there are compounding factors in these two stories.
The distinction between losing weight and fat is real, and one of the more important points from the video.
Good sleep and other lifestyle changes can definitely have a massive impact on fat loss over time.
Strength training & high protein intake are very important when trying to lose fat, and fiber absolutely helps with satiety.
I'm sure an expert could tear some of the specific claims apart, but I think the video does a great job drawing the distinction between body recomposition and weight loss in an accessible way.

If you're trying to lose fat to live a healthier life, it's often a good idea to zoom out on a wide variety of changes needed to live a healthy lifestyle.
Speaking from experience, it's highly likely that you have other problems or lifestyle issues that impede your ability to live healthily.
Sleep, stress management, sunlight, food quality (& quantity), activity, social interaction, are all things that make a huge difference.

Anyone else do zero carb carnivore? I've been on it for a year. Never going back myself. Was thinking of starting a thread, as I have been looking for somewhere to chat about it that isn't Reddit. Just seeing if anyone else was interested.

The numbers that are asserted with a lot of confidence are obviously not real. Maybe some are correct on "average", based on some random study. I doubt even that is true. Just translate things into general terms of "a lot", "a little", "more than", or "less than" and then a lot of the things said are mostly correct

One issue of the "eat more to burn more" can also be true because if you are constantly fatigued, you will exercise with less intensity, move less during the day, etc.. thus burning less. This equals to losing less weight or none at all (or even gaining)

It has been a while since I read how bodies tend to get calories from, so don't remember all the details. But you don't first burn 100% fat, then go to muscle, etc.. so , while afaik there isn't really a thing such as "starvation mode", it is possible that bodies protect some of the remaining fat storage.
Another important thing is that the girl in the video was just on the higher side of healthy BMI and losing weight at that stage is a lot harder than when you are over 300lbs.

I just posted on the how do you fight depression thread with more details on my experience with the carnivore diet as it encompasses both fat loss and curing my depression and anxiety. if anyone is interested it is there.

Yep, going strict Lion is very healthy.
It really gets your body healing, from many modern auto-immune conditions you have always assumed are genetic, or age related.
It's hard to do, especially if you are not a moderator, and like eating tasty food.

248. Twice in a row it's taken two weeks to lose a pound. Sadly time to cut more calories.

And good sleep is my demon. I have horrible insomnia which means a good night of sleep for me is 6 hours, the norm being 4-5. God id kill to be able to pass out for a solid 7-8 hours every night.

1700 calories isn't insane. ~1-2 pounds a week (.45-.9kg) is a sane amount to lose. Across 12 weeks (3 months) dropping 22 pounds is possible. All told it makes sense.

You CAN lose more, faster, but you won't keep it off. For example, do 5-7 days of a water fast, nothing but water with a little healthy salt mix (sodium/potassium/magneium/etc) -- often called "Snake Juice." You'll drop like a stone... but it's all water weight. The second you go back to eating food you'll bounce right back. What IS useful about this is it triggers autophagy something HARD, which does have tangible long term benefits, like resetting your allergies. (Pollen in the area no longer gets me, for example.)

No matter how bad shit gets, I look at my weight (which is still high, but has been trending downwards for months now) and remember: I was heavier than fucking Boogie2988 at my worst.

I'm still probably heavier than him and probably heavier than Ralph.

And I put down the second cheeseburger, wrap it in foil, and save it for another day.

Doc says 20 lbs down since last visit! Still I refuse to know the number but hey, it's trending down. 1 st 6 lb, 9 kilos in 3 months. Only 3 stone, 42 lbs or 19 kg to go. One lb a week seems so slow but but keeping it off long term is more important.

Small steps bro. Little wins should be celebrated. You're making conscious decisions to improve. Good on you bro.

Alright. Time to update on a tool I think might help some people with weight loss, as it's currently helping me. This would be red light therapy.

Red light therapy and weight loss seem to not have a huge direct correlation, as in just using the red light will not burn fat off your body. However, it does seem to aid in weight loss. I'll explain my quick trial run and how I believe its helping me:

I've now owned a very simple, cheap RLT device off Amazon for 5 days and have been using it daily. I use it on my face/neck, stomach, and uterus/ovarian area for pcos, plus additional areas like lower back or top of head irregularly. Initially purchased for hair growth (which has alot of research behind it), it's effect on weight loss is less clear. I do believe it is helping me in that regard because not only am I losing weight without effort, it feels easier to lose and I am more motivated to do so. I think this is from a combination of effects the RLT has, like:

1. Stress relief/cortisol levels. I feel slightly more joy while using RLT.

2. Red light on neck- this is specifically intended to help my thyroid

3. Red light on stomach- this might help my fat cells work better and be more efficiently burned, but less sure on this one.

So as a result of these, I have had a bit of a more normal appetite, less snacking and feel satiety easier. I have skipped a meal or had a smaller meal where normally I'd want a full size meal. My cravings are still here, but feel a bit easier to avoid. I've made no significant dietary changes and am definitely losing weight. I also find myself craving more water, vegetables and real food like eggs over bread. I'll continue to use this red light as I'm completely sold but I'll try to update how my weight goes. I think I also feel a little less bloated in general.
