Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Satanic demonology and futuristic dystopians too. But I say let them stay busy running them further into the ground. Keeps them away from new fertile grounds like Steampunk and Westerns long enough for somebody (or some group) competent enough to come along and flourish.
I agree, it’s time for new blood.

The problem with the sci-fi, fantasy and adventure genres is that they keep using superheroes, witches/wizards, aliens and horror movie monsters.

Not to mention, they keep using tropes like: heroes versus villains. I love action but I don’t want to see the same old super-powered slugfest.

I love sci-fi, adventure and fantasy but there’s a reason why those genres have sub-genres like Steampunk.

No, Harley’s insane, and a follower.

No, Selina’s a kleptomaniac and Bruce is too obsessed with his ‘mission’.
No, Ivy’s a misanthrope and an eco-terrorist. She prefers plants over humans and just because Ivy loves Harley doesn’t change that.

Victor should be reformed but not helping Batman. He should go back to his research.
I agree, but don't? The problem with Batman now is how far removed he is from BTAS. Probably because of comics being on-going, and probably also due to Brave & The Bold as that series holds a surprising amount of influence on DC currently. Batman is currently heading down the opposite direction of BTAS. We are moving towards more traditional Bright Knight than Dark Knight, which leaves some weird affects.

I say Catwoman and Batman should be together as Bat-media has basically designated Catwoman as just a Batman ally for years now. She is rarely a villain anymore. Batman is also just a lot healthier as he keeps gaining allies on a regular basis. Neither really suffers from their issues, which makes the lack of progress feel like a cop-out. They keep pushing to go down this route, but unlike B&B they don't commit.

Harley and Ivy are another modern comics wanting to take the characters in a new direction. I don't think a Harley redemption is that much of a stretch. Other than Victor, Batman always seemed the kindest towards her in BTAS and they played around with her going straight twice. The obvious end to her story was leaving the Joker, the problem is that no one figured out the after to that. The only answers are either 'be gay do crimes', become a hero, or become a wagie cuck with porn offers. The most realistic one is the last, but given comics still need her to appear, I would rather the middle if I am being honest. (The continuing nature of comics is also why Victor should just work with Batman, rather than the logical Arkham Knight ending) At least then she actually grows from her narrative. As for Ivy, if they want a redemption, then do it. I agree that she is the one who makes the least sense, but since stories are hellbent on her changing and growing with Harley, then they just need to write it out rather then playing the will she won't she for eternity.

Really, I think modern Batman is like a weird mix of all the eras. It has the 70s-2000s runs as a starting point, but is now morphing the universe into a more colorful period like the 60s era. Batman and Gotham don't become more damaged over time, they become better. Some interesting story possibilities could come from that, but not many are.

Dude, you need tone down on the capeshit.

You are overthinking things.

If this really is a quote, then this is just proof as to how they subtly treat supposed “people of color” as just sidekicks that have no redeeming qualities.

They really did not have to do Shaggy like this. I’m not calling him Norville because this version of him is just being used to treat him as just as unlikeable as Velma.

It is. From what I can tell from the trailer, Velma has another hallucination, but Shaggy isn’t there to dump for her so she can laugh at him, so now she’s decided to break him up with his new girlfriend so he’s available whenever she needs him.

🤷‍♂️

For all this talk about women being strong, independent and progressive, they always make it a goal to make women dislike other women for no reason at all except for just being a nuisance for being around them.

To be fair, progressives were sick of Mindy's "not like other girls" shtick a few shows ago. She doesn't seem able to write female friendships without it revolving around men, and The Mindy Project was just a harem of attractive men constantly going back and forth with her. However much impact she has on Velma, there are a lot of similarities to her old shows and the criticism could easily apply here. That's one thing I will say with people thinking Velma is a psyo-op, is that Mindy has always been seen as slightly behind the progressive cutting edge. So I get how people who are genuinely progressive are like "This is not IT." But the show genuinely wants to be woke, it's just not coming through because it's also trying to be edgy and can't thread the needle.

It kind of annoys me they gave him Jughead's beanie.
That’s his hair, unfortunately.

Though if it was Jughead’s beanie, I’m sure there’d would be a minute long joke stating “you are wearing Jughead’s beanie”, followed by “yes, but I don’t like to gorge on food like Jughead. I don’t overindulge.” and then he’d wink at the camera for 15 seconds while nothing else happens to allow time for “the laughing” at the Shaggy stand-in not liking food, because it’s just so subversive!

And I hate that that’s probably not an exaggeration.

Velma is a prime example of how rotten our society currently is. It has homosexuality, nudity, wokeism, it's edgy, unfunny... it probably even has trannies too, but I don't want to look more into it.

The only silver lining is that it's not marketed as a kids show. But children's cartoons these days are full of fags and shitty stuff too.

Digital animation was a mistake. I don't care what any of you says, it ruined the medium. Now we have cookie-cutter shows that require zero skill to produce. The classics are still classics because those men were masters of their craft. Modern cartoons are souless and cause brainrot.
Now I'll gladly curbstomp Velma for hours, but cookie-cutter hack artistry is hardly something ushered in by digital animation. If you separate your nostalgia from it, The Flinstones is absolute dogshit sitcom writing barely held together with about 20 unique (if I'm being generous) animations that were re-used constantly. That was an abuse of limited animation that became commonplace and practically defined Hanna Barbara's entire line of cartoons. If you want its peak form you'd check out stuff like the original Mr. Magoo, which pioneered the practice, most of Genndy Tartakovsky's work, or Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.

If you need some good digital animation, just poke around Newgrounds, that entire website is dedicated to Flash animation. Egoraptor put out some good work before he became a joyless Let's Player. Carbot does great visual gags on Flash CS6 (which I think was the last physical version of Flash ever made). You've got Into the Spiderverse for good 3D-modeling animation, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is super impressive in its own right and way better than a sequel to a fucking Shrek spin off deserves. Then there's Arc System Works latest fighting game Guilty Gear Strive, which uses 3D models but animates them with 2D animation principles. If you ever thought Street Fighter has looked awful since it got 3D, give Guilty Gear a look because those guys know how to make it look gorgeous.

It's what we all want, but has it ever happened? I remember BTAS Mr. Freeze's story just got more and more tragic the point where he was gladly welcoming death. He and Harley became victims of their own animated series' success where any time they show up they're just going to hammer the one note everyone remembers them for.
More than a little disappointed on this one. I never really looked into it but I always imagined Dan Harmon to be the creepy sex-pest because he comes off as such a joyless asshole. When I heard he had metoo bullshit going on I figured it was typical LA whores allowing themselves to be used and deciding later that the benefits weren't quite good enough for what they did for it, but yeah, this seems pretty open-shut, what a creep. Oh well, I haven't really been into Rick and Morty since I barely got through season 3 on account of that was when the fanbase hit critical retard levels.

There's a huge difference between dumb but enjoyable hackwork (like much of Hanna Barbera's back catalog) and absolutely insufferable wokeshit that makes you want to shoot the television.

It's why I can watch the old shit with a smile on my face and a cold drink. Never mind that there was this malignantly retarded take fairly recently on twitter that "nostalgia" was inherently right wing. Thankfully, the tweet was ratio'd to hell and back.

By that logic:

Having fun is right wing.
Feeling good about yourself is right wing.
Not having problems is right wing.
Being a normal, well-balanced, well-adjusted human being is right wing.
Going about your business is right wing.
Not caring about some hoodrat who is forced to jack Hondas to fill his drug quota because I don't want to GIBS him is right wing.
And on, and on, and on, and on, and on.

It's a deliberate social current by corporations that tries to frame nostalgia as bad so you wouldn't watch anything old (which brings less investors) and don't begin to wonder if various social steps were a mistake, all while using the double think of marketing their entire appeal on your memories of the times they were soulless.
