Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Someone on 4chan /co/ is already making bets it will be Harley Quinn 2.0 rather than a genuine action series.

Personally, I want this to be good. Diane desperately needs a standardization like BTAS and STAS brought to their heroes. Her series and even characterization fluctuates so rapidly that it is hard to even know what WW is. She has decent villains and side characters, but they just come and go.
I am worried that either this show will be a woke piece or some overly convoluted mess like Young Justice became, probably both.
It could end up surprising us all by being decent, but I feel James Gunn is just saying things that sound good to placate fans while they work on that currently iffy line-up of movies they've got scheduled.

It has been nearly 22 years since this was a possibility, and now we seem to be getting it. That’s right, WWTAS is seemingly in production.

So, how are they gonna fuck it up?
Well for starters, they'll probably emasculate Steve Trevor so that he's the figurative punching bag for Diana and a literal punching bag for the bad guys. The Amazon's prejudice towards Man's World is justified and Diana keeps that attitude rather than growing as a character. Oh, and expect lots of lesbian virtue signaling.

So, I just ran into something that makes me question people's general literacy and intelligence, and its something Animation-related.

It is also Garfield related, so get ready with the Quinton memes.

So recently I re-watched the movie Garfield: His 9 Lives (I used to own the comic book at one point but I don't know where it went, thankfully I found a cheap replacement on ebay). Oh, just to say this real quick.... anyone who criticizes the "Diana's Piano" segment of the film is wrong. We do not criticize acts of God here.

(But to provide a quick review of the movie as a whole, I feel like its strongest when it deviates from the comic. The parts adapted from the comic tended to work better in the comic for various artistic reasons, from jokes being delivered better to just the art giving it a different feel--the modern Garfield life and the one with the little girl and the kitten in particular worked way better in the comic. I'm also a little more partial to the comic's version of the Lab Animal story--the movie version is beautifully animated but it unfortunately delivers a less f*cked-up ending).

Aaaaaaaanyway........

Okay, to explain this without major spoilers, both the book and the movie have a scene revealing that God has cat-eyes, the intent clearly being "God is a cat and that's why the almighty is partial to them."

You would THINK this would be obvious. The very first thing in both versions of the story shows a door opening to reveal God and the narration specifically says "one day, God said..."

I mean, put two and two together: that means this being is God, right?

.... not to the internet, apparently.

I was on Youtube just now, saw a video about "Garfield Lore" by someone named Chuupo who... completely misunderstands this and instead thinks it means that the Garfield from the "Lab Animal" story evolved into a celestial being! And on further searching and reading his comments, this is apparently the standard interpretation!

No, dumbasses! The joke was that God is a cat! How do you miss that? Does Atheism make people so retarded that they can't even understand religious-based humor?

I think even Matpat would look at these people and say "I'm sorry the Educational System failed you."

Anyway, had to get that off my chest.

Diana keeps that attitude
I am genuinely concerned which characterization Diana will have. Even prior to woke, Diana was given an insufferable attitude problem in many of DC’s works, with even the JL version bordering.

I am hoping that if this show does come out, can we maybe get one of the more comedic takes. B&B, JLA, and DC Super Hero Girls (2019) are all fairly likable adaptations that I would much rather see again in comparison to JL, Young Justice, or god forbid Flashpoint and Injustice.

Disney also has an obsession for hiatuses, considering DTVA is trying to compete toe-to-toe against CN here. Still doesn't change the fact that Dana and Alex are complete cunts. Shit, at least Daron Nefcy was more chill after her show from Disney had ended, and she's currently working for Nick, for better or worse, as she still has a career.
I pretty sure Alex's career is dead now. He ruined his ties with Disney and his Netflix show was cancelled. He really is a one hit wonder and I'll bet Dana will be too.

James Gunn is involved. So it's probably going to suck.

Hirsch was more of an executive producer in Inside Job as he had little involvement, and his actual show that he greenlit to Fox had never gotten made. Terrance will never even have a career now that she left Disney TVA.

I remember Inside Job being hype up as a Alex Hirsch cartoon. So the fact that he had little involvement seems Ironic to me. Alex Hirsch had proven to be a lazy writer. Sucks since he created Gravity Falls but it seems to be true.

I do love how Dana tried too hard to be woke and will now be remmber as a blip in the animation industry.

That's only because his name was used for marketing purposes. The thing about Inside Job is that it's actually a good show and way better than Gravity Falls, and as far as adult animated shows go, it's way better than total bullshit like The Great North or Big Mouth.

Also, Dana is still a complete assbackwards twat no matter what. She'll be remembered as such in the animation industry, like how Alicia Vikander barely has an acting career since 2018 outside of The Green Knight.

I agree with the Hirsch bit but Gunn is good at making a misfit comedy flick since the Guardians of the Galaxy movies were pretty good. Despite my thoughts on him as a person (joked about fiddling kids and priests being molesters constantly. No way in hell he's clean) his work can't be denied.

HOWEVER. This is Wonder Woman, not Guardians of the Galaxy nor Harley Quinn. Her kinds of stories aren't like that at all. They're more like Thor's kinds of stories which is somewhat serious war tales drenched in mythology. Think the Thundercats cartoon back in the late 2010s or the He-Man cartoon in the late 2000s. Gunn making WW akin to Harley Quinn would be disastrous. We'll see. Or not see since DC keeps putting out stinkers.

I wasn't talking about him as a person (I don't like him as a person as you pointed above). I'm talking about his movies. Yes I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy and even the 2021 Suicide Squad movie. But see those work for their comedic themes. My point is Gunn doesn't seem to know how to make serious stories without comedic tone. Maybe I'm wrong. But I been disappointed too much in recent years to be optimistic.

I'm surprised we don't hear more about Cybersix given that the main character was a crossdresser. But I guess when America does something that's when it matters. Brazil or somewhere else doing it aren't important.

I think you're pretty spot on with a lot of the problems with modern cartoons. Everything is trying the same formula of establish rules and then have plot, and boy does everything want to have a fanbase right now.

I think what TV animation needs to take risks with weirder artists. A show like Invader Zim took the fuck off because it exposed a lot of young people to the style of the goth subculture at the time. Nothing else looked like it. A lot of these shows blend together style wise.
Even had a Nazi as a villain. I think part of it is it is fairly obscure and the whole crossdresser thing is actually not really a focus of the show, it's simply a fairly well thought out disguise. You can see why people who've met the character in both personas do not link the two together. You are also correct with the assessment that people shout louder about American shows doing that sort of thing than others though.

I understand that people are reluctant to take risks on new stuff too. For every Invader Zim there's loads that tank. As such companies are reluctant to take risks.

They don't have superpowers, you dingus
Sure they do! Their superpower is that they're somehow still alive despite having two uncles who both constantly drag them into life-threatening situations!

Also insanely accurate marble-flicking.
