I just beat
Outlaws
For a game from 97 it's very technically impressive (since it's a 2.5D game with true room over room. And it runs on the same engine as Dark Forces). It also features really good voice acting and cutscenes (all of which gives the game an aesthetic of a Disney animated film).
However the map design for the singleplayer campaign was a bit annoying. Frequently I'd get lost and have to backtrack throughout the level until I discovered where I had to go. This was doubly annoying in that each level would only end upon defeating a boss. However the boss usually would be in a random room somewhere in the level and you'd frequently kill them without knowing and end the level without the game asking you to.
Not that a lot of this was unique for games at the time, but it was certainly flawed in my opinion. However the gunplay was really good (to my knowledge it's the first game to feature a sniper rifle scope, which it also incorporated really well), the soundtrack was excellent and I really liked the story and the aesthetic. I'd go as far as to say Outlaws is one of my favorite 2.5D first person shooters.
I feel the game is largely overlooked due to releasing after Quake and Duke Nukem 3D. After Duke the 2.5D market was pretty much dead and it's considered the reason
Strife isn't remembered either. It still is one of my favorite Old West games alongside stuff like Red Dead Redemption. Thankfully it has released on GoG so now more people can play it than possible when the game initially released.
It also had a few little details I liked. Like how the main character is left handed while all of the multiplayer characters are right handed. All of the multiplayer characters also have completely different first person sprites and different stats. I heard the multiplayer for Outlaws was reasonably popular back in the 90s (evidenced by how it has over 1500 custom multiplayer maps according to one archive I found) so I'll have to check more of it out.
