These days, the CWC phenomenon is more about Chris himself and how crazy he is etc. But, from what I gather the thing that brought people's attention to OPL is Sonichu and how amazingly awful it is.
Apparently, when people looked at the toddler-like art-style, and the plot composed of of 90s cartoon clichés, sexual fetishes, whiny self-insert ego trips, etc. and the cast of stolen characters, they said "whoever drew this must be a looney" and were proven right beyond their wildest dreams.
Now imagine an alternate history. In this timeline Chris actually knows how to write and draw. He's still the same old Chris, spoiled, gullible, insane, etc. But, when he creates Sonichu he leaves those problems out of it and instead crafts a very compelling fan-comic.
The plot is a coherent, unique adventure story full of clever twists that keep you reading. No weird hedgehog sex, no revenge fantasies. The characters he borrows are used in a way that respects the source material, but expands on them and gives them depth. Chris himself only appears occasionally, and only as a supporting character. And, it's all rendered in beautiful, richly detailed, professional-quality artwork!
Would things be any different for Chris in the long run?
