I could easily slot my own experiences with yours as a woman but I'm sure there's still nuanced gendered experiences as well since men and women are just behaviorally different. All in all, I think social media technology has made people stupider, more anti-social and self-serving and less relationship material. I can only really see this with girls, but I do believe it's a universal trend.
But since there is so much commonality, I feel pretty confident in my belief that it's a combination of the environment and an abundance of stupid people. As we build up negative experiences, it's hard not to put up a guard or treat the next man/woman with more caution or build an opinion that man/woman are like this in general. In past eras we had much more mutual respect going into most dates - you showed respect to a man who may be paying for dinner (as was common back then) and you showed respect to the woman who spent 2 hours meeting societal standards of beauty and was gracious and interesting company. I realize one could blame the feminists etc but I don't think they're entirely to blame since they existed for many decades before social media and dating apps and it was still pretty normal.
I do think some men are stupid, rude, ugly people I don't like talking to. I've been ghosted, I've been mistreated, disrespected.
I also know some women are stupid, rude, ugly people I don't like talking to. I've watched females lie to their partners without pause in front of me knowing I know the truth. I've watched mothers treat children like shit.
So I think maybe overall, just a lot of really shitty people out there right now and being single is not necessarily in this era a "you" problem. It could be - you could be gross, ugly and stupid but if you're just average, it's probably not because you're inherently broken or unlovable.
