Then how do I keep doing it?
I should clarify...at least with the Samsung Galaxy series, the American versions of the phones have bootloaders that are not unlockable as the ones sold in most shops use the Snapdragon chipset, which is why I look for the international or Japanese version of the same phone which is virtually identical in all aspects except the chipset being Exynos instead of Snapdragon, as nobody has cracked the Snapdragon chipset, yet.

Alright, give me some food for thought here.

I've been using a Galaxy S8+ for years now and it's definitely starting to show its age. I'm also caveman retarded when it comes to these newer phones, so much so that the S8+ is probably the fanciest phone I've ever used in my life, and I only got that because the battery started bulging on my previous phone before that and my cell phone provider insisted that there was nothing they could do to fix it/replace the battery (even though the gimmick with that former phone was that it was supposed to have an easily swappable battery), I needed a phone, and they basically pushed the S8+ back when it was a wallet-buster on me.

I do not wish to make that same mistake again, and I've been wanting to get into a far cheaper, third party alternative that gives me similar, if not slightly better, performance than my S8+, which I use as a daily driver + for the small number of mobile games I bother playing.

Shill me on some phone options.

So me and my wife decided it's time to get new phones. I've went with Realme 9+ Pro, and for her we've got Samsung S21 FE.

And I really don't understand why hers costs twice as much. Even in photos, it's 50/50 - yeah, some of them are better, but in most cases they aren't - and the camera was the main reason to buy a Samsung's sub-flagship!

Also, no fast charge - Samsung, really? My phone charges within 30-40 minutes, while hers takes around 1.5 hours and its battery holds up much worse. And S22 has even a smaller battery (3700 mAh vs 4500 mAh) - that's why it wasn't even a option!

What's going on here? Am I missing something? Has it always been this way?

Just upgraded from my S10+ that's getting long in the tooth with a Pixel 7 Pro. I've been in the Samsung ecosystem starting with the S8+ and I figured I'd give the Pixel line a shot. I got tired of having Samsung bloatware (Who the hell wants to use Bixby?) and wanted a more stock Android experience. I like my Pixel but I'm kind of pissed I'm having bluetooth connectivity issues with my car that I think may be inherent to Android 13. Every time I restart my phone it forgets the connection with my car's infotainment system and I have to repair them. It doesn't effect my other bt devices thankfully but a bit annyoing since I'm big on switching SIM's with other phones I own.

I have a Motorola G Power I bought in 2020 as an "action" phone I use while I snowboard or run/hike outside and it's a beast. It's designed with maximizing battery life in mind at the expense of cutting out features such as NFC, no HDMI out, a slower processor, etc but it's pretty awesome how much abuse it can take.

I've been using an LG G8 ThinQ for the last few years, and my wife has been using an iPhone 12 XR. Our local cell service is running a good sale so we are both upgrading. We've been eyeing up the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The main reason I got the LG in the first place was the price/gb of storage. It's 128gb, expandable to 256gb with an additional microSD card. I used to spend quite a bit of time out of range of any kind of service so it was nice to be able to download all of my music and media straight to my device. Nowadays I don't really travel to those places, and I have a portable SSD with me anyway.

We mostly want it for the camera, and I think I still have an iCloud account with a couple of old app purchases from an iPad I used to have.

I'm going to take the LG and turn it into a glorified iPod touch to keep in the truck.

Unfortunately I also have a locked-up Samsung phone. I got it before I learned about all the better options available. It's fine, yes very bloated with a fresh reset but works very well otherwise.

Like a lot if posters here, my next phone will be a Google Pixel that I can install GrapheneOS on.

How does GrapheneOS compare to LineageOS?

Taking a break from my abusive relationship with the Pinephone; I have run back to the comforting arms of my ex, the Moto Z4, and the childlike joy I get out of the snap on module hardware that goes with it.

Decided to refresh the Z4 with a new battery- The old one hasn't gone complete dogshit but is noticably worse than when I first had it three years ago. So why not, when I have the tools and the OEM battery is only $22 from reliable sources. The display is still good with no burn in or cracks so hey! Should be good as new.

I originally bought the Z4 back when because I am an unironic fan of the Snapdragon 675. Hear me out: It is energy efficient, extremely well optimized, and still capable of virtually any task short of high end gaming (which I have zero interest in lol).

I think sometimes we pursue faster chips for their own sake and forget that you just don't really NEED speeds that fast for 90% of use cases. For a lot of people slightly older phones and lower spec, energy saving chips are a solid decision.

Currently using a LitePhone 2
It's been rather fun actually, and not having a ton of apps I don't use anyway has been nice. Work, however, has determined that I have to have a "real" smartphone. Promotions bring problems, I guess.
Next phone: One+ Nord 20 5G
A friend told me they're kinda hit or miss, but it's a good price point and my old Note 10 is stuck with the Verizon os and giving me some issues with battery life and some apps just not working right since I can't update the os anymore.

Got a Pixel 7 Pro to replace my Galaxy S8+ because I could install GrapheneOS on it. It's pretty ironic that the best phone to "de-Google" is the one made by Google. Everything works fine, I just wish I could use some of the fancy features in Google's official camera app, but I'm not willing to install Google Play Services to do it. Camera quality is identical to stock, so I guess I can just edit on a PC if I feel the need to doctor up my pictures.

Currently I have three phones. Well 5 including my home phone and a phone I'm reusing that I've had for a while. First gen iPhone SE, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and a homephone.

A couple of years ago I finally bought a smartphone. Before that I had a simple flip phone, basically a burner, with no internet just text and calling. Now I have an iPhone 7 which has ruined my life and I’m planning to upgrade to the 11 in a few weeks.
Why did it ruin your life?

It's been mentioned in this thread a couple times but I'll ask again, does anyone have any experience with Fairphones? Are they stable and reliable in the long run?

Lol Obvious sarcasm is obvious. 😝🤣 Basically smartphones are the best thing to ever happen to this world. Aside from maybe digital cameras, PC's, and entertainment as a whole, plus being able to make really good food.
