Mentally retarded people in the 40s were treated substantially better (unless it was a mentally disabled black man and the Ku Klux Klan, but that's for a different reason). Retardeds like Chris were put into lunatic asylums.Unlike normal people, he can't simply put something down, say he didn't like it, and find something better. I miss the 40s when it was morally responsible to smash retards like Chris upside the head with a full can of paint.
Now, he's treated like an endangered species of water fowl valued for its high pitch squaking and offensive smell
The mentally disabled, society, and their parents were forced to acknowledge they were different. This is part (but not the only) of the reason why Bob and Barb were pretty terrible parents: they refused to let Chris be treated for autism at school because they feared he would be institutionalized for autism as an adult.
This obviously was a huge mistake, as Chris was lead to believe that every shortcoming in his life is due to other people and not his own actions, moral failings and mental disability. Additionally, it is pretty obvious his life has been substantially worse than had he been institutionalized with other retards.
