The Kaminoans have technically kept genetically deformed clones before but under the premise that they were specialized or useful in the field.
isn't that a post-legends creation so they can introduce the bad batch?
Master of Orion 2 (a 1996 "4X" game) has multiple clear references to Star Wars, and maybe more obscure ones.
Would you consider the Antarans a reference to the Vong? I know interdimensional freaks are practically a standard sci-fi trope themselves but its not more of a stretch than stuff like a "galactic republic" also there are plenty of star trek refernces too, tritanium being a big one, and you'll be seeing it more often than the doom star or stellar converter because its a mid-level tech vs those two being end game, same with Androids being near the end of the tech tree. phasers and a bunch of other sci-fi refernces pop up in Moo 2.
You might have also found one of the only other people that still remembers that game. Fun fact did you know a Russian scifi author has two books based on that universe? This was my first 4x game and i played it a lot instead of going to parties as a teenager. It was simple enough that my young mind could wrap my head around it and the game could be short enough that you could go from pre-warp to doom star in an hour, the game even penalized you for going over 500 turns right? IIRC it was easy to cheese the game in a lot of ways. and non-space combat was practically a meme too, it was practically an instant win if you made a custom race, especially if the custom race you make takes over the "spy" race.
Imagine if Disney actually had the balls to portray large battles in the New Republic era.
probably not, people already complained about the space battle in Rogue one being a mess and that was the smallest battle.
ll. The reference of things people know is the opposite of how Star Wars felt like a big lived-in universe.
ironically enough the RLM figured out why this is when complaining about it in Star Trek, because its not made by fans or even people familiar with the material they go with easy references any idiot (woman) would know, thats why everything revolves around Tattooine and a handful of characters. RLM proved this in one of their Picard videos by asking Jay random questions and not only did Jay get them wrong, he gave the same wrong answers that apparently the writers did when asked stuff like "who was data's best friend on TNG"
Its like how Ten Forward went from an obvious name to anyone that has any knowledge of military boats or sense of logic to requiring its own shitty explanation. if fans made decisions at Disney we'd be getting references to characters that show up for one mission in a star wars game 30 years ago, The same way Galaxy at war post-endor mod includes every planet in the EU at that point and every single fucking imperial admiral and all 10 super star destroyers. Along with a lot of other crazy shit.
The High Ground gets meme'd on a lot but it truly was a gift from the Force that allowed Obi-Wan to exploit Anakin's irrational hatred against himself.
not only that, the only reason Obi-wan knew it was a losing move is because he already did it before and therefore knew the strategy and how to counter it. a literal call-back rhyme.
The Mariachi Triology wasn't even all that good it was more for the first two installments impressive what he was able to make with the budget he was given. You remove that novelty and he's just making abstract shit.
he was always more of a meme, i guess the best way to put it is that Quintin Tarrentino had a posse of hanger ons around him like Joe Rogan did, only instead of shitty comedians it was shitty directors. That and them all coming up and being Weinstein's boys means they had reasons to hang out together. Eli Roth was basically the answer to the question "what if RoRo didn't get into kids films and green screen bullshit" and the answer is he would have been found out to be a shitty director a lot quicker.
Like you said people were more impressed at how good it was given the budget than them being good films. In another or even the modern era RoRo would have just been forced to do shitty indie films and keep knocking them out of the park forever instead of failing at big budget films.
but with leadership like this, I expect proper Star Wars quality.
i defend it by assuming there were a lot of constraints and notes. Obviously if this series came out in 2004 with Lucas still at the helm he would have let everyone get nuts. but instead its a disney product.
