Diseased Open Source Software Community - it's about ethics in Code of Conducts

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
The main beef with Linux they had is that it ate a bit of Windows' market share.
Did it? 99% of Windows license sales are either OEMs (in which case money is already paid, no one bothers with refunds) or corporate (who aren't gonna switch ecosystems for reasons short of geopolitics). A bunch of nerds installing Ubuntu or buying a Steam Deck barely make a dent.

Just because they are not actively fucking Linux desktop end users directly, that does not mean they are being "friendly" to open source. They acquired GitHub, started contributing to a bunch of open source projects, spun a few out with CLAs, probably contributed to "CLAs" being a thing... I think they want to *own* open source.
The reason these large companies participate in open source development is because it's a form of risk reduction where a large project is developed together with other large vendors so they all keep each other in check. This has an effect where in many cases the general public wins, because they benefit from free labor these companies donate. There's always a danger that one of those actors becomes too dominant and nobody has the power to control them (example: E3C and Google). CLAs are probably not even a part of corporate strategy but required by their lawyers and to meet risk reduction goals (nobody can sue them at some random point in the future regarding copyright).

The entire git history is changing godot to redot and re-syncing to godot master

Did these niggers write a SINGLE line of code? :stress:

It seems a new "report" has been published (archive) on Richard Stallman of Free Software Foundation fame, reminiscing of the open letter (archive) from a few years ago, but far lengthier and much more loaded, clearly the result of some organized effort between people; the authors did not disclose themselves yet. The last time many people jumped onto the drama, both against and in support of him, I'm not sure if there's going to be a repeat of that also given his health issues lately, but it's already being pushed around and the usual suspects won't skip the opportunity to chime in, too.

A personal favorite quote of mine from it, I believe it encapsulates its.. questionable disposition very well:
We are of the unfortunate opinion that the scope and extent of your misconduct disqualifies you from formal positions of power within our community indefinitely

Stallman just seems like a mega-autist who has no idea how to express himself in a way that doesn't sound weird, and no one going after him seems to be doing it in good faith. Everyone seems to either be power hungry or politically invested in his removal. He made & kept the FSF together, and no one else in it is at all trustworthy enough to run it well.

One thing I will give the trannies is they actually get shit done. It's so fucking annoying that everyone who shares my politics seems to be a lazy grifting piece of shit.
Trannies are effectively SSRI zombies that go into hyper-autistic programming states. They have no semblance of work/life balance. Their only hobby, gooning, can be done in the 15 minute breaks afforded by Pomodoro time-management systems.

For a long time, programming was a very niche field where auteur personalities thrived, but nowadays the top- and middle-man pressures on developers is to write very, very modular and well-documented source code following specific design patterns that all have names. In the 2000s, a single guy would write a game like Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 entirely in Assembly so that it would run properly on basically every computer. These days, everyone writes in the same handful of languages.

This is why Indians have taken over the industry. They can be trained in a few weeks to write the same kind of code that the rest of the industry does. And because it's this super modular code, even if it's complete shit, there's a thought that it can be replaced later. So you hire a bunch of Indians at almost no cost for a minimum viable product, then you source $10 million dollars from angel investing, then you hire a bunch of SSRI zombie trannies to return indian MVP into a real enterprise platform, then you sell it to somebody else for $350 million dollars, retire at 50, and go take up golf.

Developers are effectively a form of product and idealistic weirdos like Stallman represent an old, tired remnant from the days of industry past.

Taxpayer funded things need to be open source if created by a government agency (not a contractor) and if it's unclassified.
I wondered if you could FOIA request the source code for government software. Wouldn't that force the disclosure of information, in this case source code, even if it's held by a private contractor? I'm not very familiar with the FOIA process, but that's my understanding of it.

The worst thing about these reports is that, because they are long, use big words, and cite "sources", readers assume the authors are saying something important and in a logical manner. For example, at the "rebuttal on Stallman's sexual relations between adults and minors" paragraph almost exactly 15% of the way through the archived article, these cowards write:

Older men often manipulate minors into unsafe sexual practices, leading to undesirable outcomes for their victims. Young girls are often unprepared to negotiate the use of contraception with an older partner, resulting in teenage girls having unprotected sex at a rate that increases by 11% for each year older their partner is. (Manlove, Ryan, Franzetta 2007)9 Minors who have sexual relationships with partners 5 or more years older are 3.7 times more likely to experience an unwanted pregnancy (Planned Parenthood, 2004; Darroch et al., 1999)10 11 and twice as likely to acquire a sexually transmitted infection (STI) than peers who have partners similar in age (Ryan, Franzetta 2008 ).12

And while I am not nearly as logically consistent in my word choice as RMS, I can easily see the authors are using several acronyms for child: minor, young, teenager; while earlier in the writing, they clearly state and acknowledge RMS's definitions of words (in this case "child" is explicitly defined by RMS as being a human up to 12 or 13 years old, after which they are considered either adolescents or teenagers). So by doing this, they are relying on the readers' assumptions on what these words mean.

I am sympathetic to RMS in having these fights, regardless of my opinion on what his beliefs are (some of which I do not agree with at all). Even if these well-funded, say-nothing, over-educated, political activists were to debate RMS on equal grounds (preferably in person) and summarily lose, they would not have the maturity to self reflect on what they did wrong and why it was so. And these attacks are going to continue as long as RMS exists.

I feel like that would be stalled or blocked outright with some kind of carveout about national security, as retarded as it would be. I wonder if Hardin would want to give it a shot, since it seems like he just enjoys shitting on the government with foia requests.

Drama in the open source Steam Deck sphere has been going on for about a week. The open source plugin launcher/framework w/ download repositoty for plugins for Steam Deck called Decky Loader maybe compromised by the usual suspects.

A quick explanation of of Decky: Decky Loader allows you to install and download plugins from various open source plugin developers that allow you to do things like add a custiom boot video, change your decks theme or in the case of this drama, streamlining the installation non-steam games and launchers (i.e Epic, gog, Etc...)

The team behind Deckyloader made a free app called junk Store, which does just that. They would then, later announce it was coming to Steam, would become closed sourced and paid. This would then cause them to be critiscized by the community with one of the more vocal criticizers being a dev of a plugin that does the exact same thing, called nonsteamlaunchers.

NonSteamLaunchers gets booted from Steam Deck plugin store Decky Loader(Article). They would rationalize claiming bigotry and the usual rigamaroll. Nonsteamslaunchers dev, would then respond via reddit.

Tl;DR: Open source project becomes closed paid, claims bigotry to remove and harass competing free project, from there plugin repository.

Long before steam deck was a thing, upgrading windows used to cost $100. Also, OEMs would quote you machines with blank hard drives for ~$100 less. The less cattle-like users would stumble on Ubuntu or something, and maybe 10% of those would install it. Not a huge loss for them, but they are paper clip maximizers. They definitely did engage in tactics to make this harder. They certainly don’t care anymore, that’s my point. They are making their money on azure and office365, not individual windows sales.

I tried searching it on X and all I got was a single link from a hacker news bot

unique email domain checks out.

He also has a bluesky profile, hadn't checked it yet, but he is very likely the originator, but it's not 100% for sure.

I've already been duped before, by reading this thread. Why stop, then? All these faggots exploiting my attention for 278 pages. Drew must be laughing at me as I keep reading about his retarded antics, giving him precisely what he wants. It's never been more over.
If you mock your enemies, they win. This faggot will keep bravely posting through a veil of tears until the day he ropes. That would be the ultimate own of rightoids, as long as his corpse still has that insufferably smug grin, right?
"Haha you are laughing at the foot long dildo I stuck in my ass before an heroing."
Anyway, back on topic. In my opinion, there are (very) few explicitly right-wing projects, because programmers with those beliefs are way too busy with getting paid for their work, which in turn makes them more right-wing as more and more of their paychecks goes to welfare for leftrannies. In other words, righty codespergs are what enables these faggots to push their gay shit.
Moreover, emotional maturity is in my experience negatively correlated with the incessant need to inject propaganda into your work; it's quite obvious guys putting on dresses never matured past the rebellious teenager phase.
Also, leftist extremism is, unlike reasonable right wing opinions, outright encouraged in most of developed countries. You'd have to be insane to paint a target on your back to make troons seethe.

Stallman has said some dumb and awful shit for sure. If this wasn't part of the culture war bullshit, I'm sure many of you would be really picking apart his gross pedo comments about teenagers and the age of consent and bestiality and so on. The dude is an autistic sex creep. Despite the report (also) being autistic cringe, the report is well cited and damning. I suppose what I'm getting at is this: this report is nothing new. The man is retired, inactive, and very old. His reputation and past actions are already known and it is very unlikely that any new or relevant organization would welcome him into its ranks.

Part of the problem is that he was elevated to a position of power and influence, and then somehow managed to stay there despite the FSF not really being relevant in today's (modern) world. I would classify who ever wrote this report as a bunch of clout-chasing losers who seek to tear down a man with an already tattered reputation, who is hardly even a figurehead, for an organization that hasn't meaningfully contributed anything substantial or novel to the world in over a decade.

You can definately FOIA the source code, but private contractors retain ownership of things they make on government contracts (very gay, I know), so you would only be able to use the code if a government agency was the one that made it.
