Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Even with all the recent chintz and rearming the PLA has done as well as the rumour that they have retrained large parts of their military along USMC lines the PLA is still a hilarious paper tiger that's never won a war in its history. Its mostly a civic engineering body that builds shit when called on by Beijing.

It could try to invade Taiwan, but god knows if it'd actually manage anything. It's more likely to have a spot of adventurism in the south china sea.

If China tries to go full warlord it's already dead. I've joked about WW3 being a repeat of the last 2 but let me be clear. ALL chink allies aside for maybe some goatfuckers will betray them the first sniff they get of actual danger. Neocons/neolibs don't keep their word. The CCP has been unwise to trust them. And I can tell you for a fact, here in spain the non-PSOE left is salivating at the idea of taking a knife to china just so they can cut off the source of so much corruption, and the non-PP right is just as giddy at the idea of getting a good old war against commie fucks. And the PP and PSOE have proven beyond reasonable doubt they'll bend if pressed. I can imagine most of the rest of the world is in similar position. China would be most unwise to give us an excuse to roll out the tanks. And spain's military might look goofy half the time but they know what they're doing and they've answered every call they've gotten since we're a democracy. One of the good things of being the preferred target of islamist assholes is you can't let your military get complacent. If China attacks we'll be hitting them along the USA and UK for sure, and I'm fairly certain russia and at least part of eastern europe will join the fun. It's gonna turn into a free for all quick and the Chink army is fucking weaksauce all things considered. Specially now, they've not even tried to protect their own streets from mere unarmed civilian action, they won't be up to par compared with the real deal.

I would guess its the air in the elevator. those arent vented that good. for surface contact? why arent the surfaces wiped after infected touched them?

They ARE. For both suspect and confirmed cases. But there's this wonderful things called asymptomatic carriers. Which might not be even suspected. They are really fucking good at accidentaly causing massive outbreaks the bastards. That's been what caused a lot of the spread on both hospital outbreaks. It's hard as fuck to contain, social distancing isn't enough when surfaces can go full nuclear this easily as our doctors have realized time and time again.

As expected, Corona-Chan appears to be hitting the Black population particularly hard. I say "appears" because 40% of cases did not record the race of the patient, leaving most data uncertain.

perhaps we shouldn't be in such a hurry to cure this thing

D) Wear gloves when you're outside and assume all surfaces are contaminated.
I use old leather gloves outside, they are good enough to keep the infection away and i can just wipe them in h2o2 afterwards, i dont care if they are completly destroyed after this spring.

just let others build your U boats. also Tanks, buy our Tanks, we need the jobs right now.

Only one pic in this story. No mention of risk factors, but no claims of perfect health either.

The mortality rate isn't zero if you're young and in good health. It's like 0.2% or something. If enough people get it some young and healthy people will die and the media will focus on them in a way that gives a very misleading impression of who is at risk. Since it's the Guardian they might even think they're performing a public service by saying 'Look young and healthy people die too" to try to encourage people to stay inside.

This is what happens when glorified bloggers think they're philosopher kings who can lie to the public in the public's interest.

I managed to order some blue nitrile gloves before it all went to shit. Highly recommended if you can still get them. For everything else, I'm just washing my clothes in a toxic mix of detergent, bleach-based stain remover and laundry disinfectant, tumble drying at high temperature and then ironing them. Given that any one of those steps should inactivate viral particles I reckon I'm pretty safe.

Incidentally, the virus can only survive 72 hours, even on plastic or steel. The survival time is less for cardboard, just 48 hours. So time will disinfect too.

It may well turn out that touching an infected surface is a very uncommon way to contract the disease and that inhaling droplets is the cause of most or all infections, but I think at this point it's probably better to assume that infected surfaces are potential infection sources.

China is not really in any position to try and breach the US naval wall in the pacific. As much as it would be satisfying to push their shit in they arent going to try anything.

Some things that have come up so far today.

Here in the UK the extra powers are getting to the police's heads. Got pulled over after a shop. He tells me some of my shopping isn't a necessity (a bloody 4 pack of beer in 3 bags of shopping) told him to go police hurty words on twitter. It's getting crazy!

UK police are being busy body wankers? Say it ain't so!

Sweden is shit outta luck.

Fred Flintstone wants to railroad some kind of enabling act through parliament so that the government can institute regulations without parliamentary consent.

Rest assured they will still assblast Hungary for doing basically the same thing with their rules of decree they just imposed. Going to be one of those "its ok when we do it but you are fascist for doing it" things again.

De Blasio and the MTA are now telling everyone to wear masks or cover their mouths with a scarf or bandana. We knew it was BS masks don't help but I agree, Fauci should have said medical personnel need PPE urgently. There's plenty of blame to go around and some of it should fall on stores allowing chinks to literally buy pallets of masks to send back to China. By early February masks of any kind were difficult to find, anywhere,

2. MTA tells bus riders to shield faces to prevent coronavirus spread (https://archive.vn/fLSXk)

The head of Florida's Division of Emergency Management has accused U.S. mask manufacturer 3M of shipping the critical protective equipment to foreign countries who outbid U.S. buyers -- even as hospitals and state officials desperately scramble to secure N95 protective masks for healthcare workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. Yeah, that probably wasn't the smartest thing to do right now. Great going, 3M, I'm sure that getting all of the countries of the world into a bidding war over these supplies won't piss anybody off, especially no one in America. Oh wait it did.

So according to historical data in 1918 there was about 103 million Americans. Spanish flu killed about 500K of them which amounts to 0.5% of the population. Hm... It looks like our waifu is on her way to kick the Spanish thot in her ass.

This was a good day: I got my supply of organic chicken. And I've read this heart-warming news: golden parachute for Adam Newman got cancelled!

Lovely!

The Navy ship is useless. But its the USN so we already knew.

What the fuck are you even doing here then? Samaritan's Purse is doing a better job and they don't even have 1/100th of the resources the Navy does.

The 17 days is more likely to refer to them finding bits of the virus still in the cruise ship, not necessarily that it's still alive and infectious. Spread by talking hasn't been proven or studied yet from what I've seen. The first article I've seen mentioning that might be what's happening was today. However given how quickly it spread and how asymptomatic people are spreading it, you should assume that's what is happening.

This is the study talking about how long it lasts. There's a popular infographic for how long it lasts on a surface. This is under optimal laboratory conditions.

If you're going out anywhere that other people have been or are going to be when you return home everything you're wearing should be immediately washed, including yourself, and if you're using cloth masks, those as well.

Some unsurprising news from Ireland (https://www.rte.ie/news/2020/0403/1128300-ppe-covid-19-ireland/). Medical staff complain of useless Chinese PPE gear, for instance with three quarter or short sleeves.

We shouldn't get too worried about PRC. They face demographic disaster, an army of incels thanks to One Child. They don't even have a carrier, unless you count one of the retired, obsolete Soviet tubs they put into service. I hope there will be a reckon for PRC and its bat, dog and cat eaters.

Piss off, it's even worse with the ship docked at LA. The Army hospital at the Javits Center is taking patients without bureaucratic bullshit. The Navy's criteria is so restrictive and time-consuming hospitals don't even bother. Looks like it's doing what the Navy does best; looking good and not much else. Both ships can fuck off and look pretty somewhere else.

Looks like that's going to change after the Pentagon got involved.

I'm sorry, I was under the impression that it was doing things just not at the speed people wanted because they don't fire more than 2 neurons at a time. Thank you for clarifying that it hasn't done anything yet. Or maybe, in order to not fuck things up and contaminate a major navy asset and render it useless for an extended period of time they are taking extra precautions. I might just be firing too many neurons though. I should be thinking at your level. Precaution bad, haste good.
Thank you for clarifying that it hasn't done anything yet (https://archive.vn/i74XE)
Sharing a tool: Google launched a "Community Mobility Report" comparing anonymous™ mobility data by Retail, Grocery, Parks, Transit, Work, and Residential. Some only show the country level, but many drill down pretty far to province/ state/ county/ district. China isn't represented, shocking.

Indeed.

Folks, please keep in mind that the ChiCom Flu doesn't stop at the main gate of any military base anywhere in the world. This illness is affecting ALL militaries, worldwide, to varying extents.

Earlier mentioned that I believed all nuclear strike force personnel, worldwide, were locked down to ensure they didn't get the virus. You MUST have your bomber crews, your missile launch crews, and your support/maintenance people available 24/7/365. A no-brainer.

Some countries may need to lock down a whole bunch of people. The USA may already have locked down ALL pilots/aircrews, whether fixed-wing or rotary-wing, plus their support/maintenance personnel. My guess - the UK and Russia have done much the same. Chinese would be smart to do the same, as should Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. Other countries may do this on a smaller scale.

In certain areas of the world you'd need to protect air defense forces, such as Korea, Taiwan, and parts of the Middle East.

It's probably easier to say which parts of the military shouldn't be locked down, and I can't think of much, really. Over the years the USA has done so much cutting of the force that they need everyone available to carry out the ever-expanding mission.

Some areas of a military will be able to absorb the impact better than others. The areas that have been identified as requiring lockdown would be most impacted by people out sick. Administrative and staff functions could get by with people out, except for certain one-deep jobs. Could see such people tasked to work from home, sick or not. In most countries you won't need large amounts of infantry and armor immediately. Korea is an exception.

Bottom line: Each nation's military leadership, if smart, has had plans on the books as to what to do in case of an epidemic/pandemic. Just part of normal contingency planning. You go to your plan and carry out the plan, making adjustments along the way. That's all you can do. Am sure the world's major militaries are doing this as we speak.

It helps that Chinese carriers come pre-sunk and full of holes.

I bet their Aegis knock off isn't as good as the original too. They don't have as much experience operating a carrier battle group as the US and it seems like even the US Navy is worried about volleys of anti-ship missiles.

What do you say now, Mr. Brapwell?

Received my paperwork from the unemployment office, they're giving me a whopping $350 a week. I guess that shit that Bernie put into the bill isn't in effect yet due to how slugish our federal government works. But hey, I'm just glad Boeing is going to get a couple billion as they're who truly suffers through all this :tugboat:

Looks like you were right @EmuWarsVeteran , we have over 400 new cases today, a lot of them highly localized again. 14 more people died too. According to latest statistics, almost 20% of all infections - almost 500 all in all, probably more now because this was about yesterday's numbers - are medical personnel. And God knows how many of the remaining cases are their patients as well as nursing house residents and caretakers. Ridiculous. I honestly don't even know if they're running out of protective supplies or just don't follow safety regulations. Everyone's effort and sacrifice could be in vain because of this bullshit. Rough times ahead.
