Avowed - Obsidian's new game, like Pillars of Eternity meets Elder Scrolls

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
It's probably going to be Outer Worlds Part 2, a functional open world vanilla paste title. Doesn't help that usually anything Pillars-related ends up being boring anyway. Functional to play, but extremely milquetoast/boring. I also saw some people shocked to see Josh Sawyer reposting those tweets, which shouldn't be surprising considering he has been an insufferable douche on the internet for over a decade. One that can make games and write good stories, but an insufferable douche nonetheless.
It's definitely going to be one of those games where you have to start making your own fun, which isn't bad with those open world games. If magic does a bunch of weird stuff and isn't just an alternative weapon, which is most of what Skyrim's magic was, then I think it'll be all right. You're right about Pillars related stuff though, the original concept was cool but it hurts a lot of future production when you wipe away most of the mystery in the first game.

This post from the director wasn't in this thread. From the Asmongold video.

I don't understand how people who are such self hating people white people can exist. Of course it's bullshit or he'd give his job to BIPOC or some shit. This is going to be another HR game like Veilgard. Say what you will about Baldur's Gate and the gay shit in there, you have to at least genocide a group of people to get past the first act.
Turns out Matt's bsky tweet was deleted after Asmongold and Smash JT exposed him. But it gets worse.

Avellone really dislike the leading of Obsidian, so I am not shocked he is putting out stuff like this.
Anyway, Matt Hansan is a fucking retard. He went full "Fuck you chuds" instead of being more diplomatic.
I don't blame him. He was probably the only talented one at the studio, and when he worked on Pillars his chief complaint was retards coming in and strangling his creative voice despite having a fraction of the accomplishments or time with the company.

Avellone is also one of the only people who has been Metoo'd and survived/gotten revenge so he is probably infinitely more based than he lets on.

It's not open world. It's fucking zone based level shit like Outer Worlds which means your progression through areas will be linear.

That's kind of the problem. I don't think it looks like you can do anything neat with the magic and the melee isn't anything to write home about when you have games like Vermintide/Darktide, Mordhau, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance. I've brought those up a couple of times and I think while they all have their flaws and are featured in very different kinds of games, they each show where first person melee has gone in the last decade and a half. People complained about Skyrim melee and I don't think it's significant step up from that. They could get away with it if the game was meant to be a proper rpg but stats alone to not an rpg make. Think Morrowind. This is an action game with an rpg coat of paint. There's a lot within the skill tree and how you command companions through a radial menu that reminds me of Veilguard - so much so that it wouldn't surprise me if in months (or years) to come, we find out that there was idea sharing or some of the same personnel. Both Obsidian and Bioware are studios that are constantly cycling through employees, as is the norm for these AAA slop teams (Avowed is $70, it is a AAA title). In conclusion, the action looks too stiff to sell me on it being an action game, and the rpg elements seem too nonsense to by anything more than an exercise in number go up syndrome. I really don't care about any woke elements because my dissatisfaction stems from deeper than pronouns, nigger elves, or soydevs.

I played Pillars of Eternity 1 and I don't remember a single fucking thing other than that based preist. Never played 2. Can I get a story recap?
So the game starts with your character observing some weird ritual that knocks him unconscious. When you wake up you find that you're a "Watcher" which is a person who can see and read people's souls, living or dead. It also means that you can remember your past lives which will drive you insane after a while so the main quest involves you figuring out how to fix that. As you go on you find out the guy who did that ritual is the head of a cult that you were apart of in the past and did a bunch of nasty shit for. The cult's whole thing is that they're hiding the big secret that all of the gods were just manufactured by an ancient society that looked out into where souls go and saw nothing. At the end you can decide if you want to do with the leader of the cult.

In the second game the castle you built in the first has been destroyed when the god Eothas (the one the based priest blew up) inhabits the giant statue under it and starts walking off. You die for a while but get brought back by the gods because they want you to do something about Eothas. He's made it all the way to the ocean so now instead of a castle you have a boat (so you can fight the same combat 100 times). As you follow the giant statue the gods talk to you a lot and tell you that its super important that you do what they want and that you definitely need to find Eothas. Eventually you track him down to the thousandth big ass soul machine the old civilization made and he explains that he's going to break the wheel of souls, which is a machine the gods made to reincarnate people. He wants it to happen all natural instead. At the end you can try to convince him to do one thing or another but I think the canon ending is that he breaks the wheel like he wanted and your main character has essentially done nothing except fight the same boat combat 100 times.

Obviously there's a bunch of other stuff that goes on but I think those are the main story beats.

I have been watching this faggot Spell&Shield, very small Jewtuber, coping about Avowed not actually being woke because 'The setting is written this way so it's okay' for the past several months and it is nice to see that my bullshit detector is going off correctly once again.

I assume this will probably sell 'okay' and people will be relatively positive on it until public perception sours on it six months later.
You know a setting that's "written for it"? Star Trek. Obligatory "it has pushed boundaries", etc. But it is genuinely well written and it has all the "diversity" without even once uttering the accursed word, not that its modern installments are saved from checkboxing. It even had the alien tranny episode with Riker being confirmed a chaser, and it still preached less than any media does today. Everything makes sense in-setting and there's no awkward inserts. There's another example in the Deep Space 9 Dax pseudo-lesbian episode. What looks like #FirstLesbianKissOnTV is actually about unrequited love between two alien symbionts who loved eachother in past lives as man and woman, but could no longer because of the taboos of their society (which aren't allegorical to anything – Trill symbionts are barred from being married across generations to prevent tyranny and familial inbreeding). It makes perfect sense in the context of the setting. No forced pronouns, no identity politics, not a mention of gender anywhere – hell, they even did blackface multiple times.

With this latest spate of DEI-branded slop, none of it ever makes sense. It's forced investment-baiting or, worse, the final symptom of deep game company infiltration. All the actual talent has been replaced by twittoids. It's not "go woke, go broke", it's the other way around, both financially and creatively.

It looks like Avowed will be successful in avoiding the male gaze, and successfully avoiding my wallet too.

I can already hear Fleek talk about BUDGET CUTS
Its going to be VERY funny if the lawsuits against Microsoft start dropping.

All you need is one smart lawyer seeing a discrimination case payday.
Good to see that Chris at least has some balls here. Imagine if the game gets buried in controversy and actual lawsuits before it releases and that completely overshadows the game launch in February.
Avellone is also one of the only people who has been Metoo'd and survived/gotten revenge so he is probably infinitely more based than he lets on.
I got bad news for you, buddy...

Little wonder that Obsidian has gotten so mediocre when Chris and Tim can barely get anything done. Now imagine someone with less talent and experience trying to get these retards to do their jobs.

Man... I was really trying to be optimistic too. I knew there was a reason I wanted to read this thread.

All I want to do is be a wizard in a big open world causing problems for me and everyone else. Is that too much to ask?

Outer Worlds was 100% a "number go up" simulator. Just like in Soyfield, there were tiers of weapons(some introduced in DLC, altho not for every weapon variant so you would have some weapons stuck at MK2 and some at MK3 or even MK4 if I remember correctly). Legendaries/Unique Weapons also had tiers, meaning that the unique weapon you found at the start of the game is absolutely useless the moment you find a regular MK2 weapon, unless the unique has some rad effect you like, in which case you can spend a ridiculous amount of money to tinker with it to raise it's damage to similar, but still lower levels than that of a regular MK2. Enemies are similarly bullet sponges that vary by location, good luck killing anything with your starting weapons in DLC areas until you pick up a MK3 variant of the same weapon down the line.

Avowed looks like it will be extremely similar, ShillUp mentioned a bandit camp that was higher level than him and he wasn't doing any damage to them while they 1-2 hit killed him. This is absolutely how OW did level scaling, and we all see the similarities the two game have. Expect a very similar game with minor improvements to the formula and everything reskinned to be medieval fantasy(or rather, modern day DEI approved slop-fantasy).

a god takes over a giant statue, stomps around a couple of islands, you follow the aftermath, have a conversation with him, the end

PoE2: Deadfire has one of the worst main plots in a RPG, it could probably be finished in under a hour. Funniest thing is probably that Durance's (the based priest) in PoE1's backstory is essentially the same plot (stop a god; the same god, even) but infinitely more interesting -- he got to build a magical nuclear bomb and actually stop the god.

This is also why it is not worth playing these games at difficulty higher than "normal".

I guess buccal fat removal is a thing in that universe.

I let my Anti-Obsidian guard down for once, thinking they might pull through and not make a broken unfinished mess (KOTOR 2 & New Vegas) or a boring snooze fest (Outer Worlds) and they go and pull this. And to see Sawyer do it made all of it that much sweeter. Avallone and Sawyer, the saints of Fallout to these knuckle dragging Obsidiots and what do they finally show themselves to be? A rapist and a raging batshit crazy leftoid.

People are finally seeing Obsidan for the hacks and frauds they always have been and it’s so glorious to see. Ultimate vindication, Obsidian shutting down or being completely swallowed by Bethesda, is within reach. I should give Obsidian a chance more often. The only thing that could make this better is if Avallone was to never work on a video game or anything ever again.
What a wonderful start to Thanksgiving weekend.

Just to clarify, I will probably check this game out on Game Pass because I genuinely was interested in it. It could be a halfway decent or even pretty darn good game. Who knows, this whole thing could just be the asshole melting down and the game isn’t actually like that (don’t hold your breath) but that makes it WORSE because the game could’ve been a smash hit if he’d just kept his moronic mouth shut.
