Anyone else see what they have planned for the Magic Kingdom? They’re tearing out Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island to build a shitty Cars attraction!

I've been trying for months to understand what it is about Disney that pisses me off so much. Yes, we all hate the race swapping, the political messaging, the lack of creativity, etc. But just about every company is like this nowadays, and I think they're retarded and go about my day, not giving it much thought after. Why does Disney above all others stir visceral hatred from me? This post finally made me realize it: it's hubris.

I used to love their parks as a kid. Sure, I loved seeing childhood movies come to life and all that, but there was something else that's missing now, which I've usually just described as "heart" and left it at that.
But what it was, was a respect (even reverance) for American culture, past present and future. It almost felt like Walt Disney was proud to have a metaphorical seat at the table.

Disney honored it's past with things like the Hall of Presidents, Tom Sawyer Island, Pirates of the Caribbean, the entirety of Frontierland, and the entirety of old Hollywood Studios. They also were optimistic of the future with Tomorrowland and the main section of EPCOT. They also had respect for america's place on the world stage (without demeaning us), with the World Showcase and out greater place in the world with Land and Sea in EPCOT.

But now, Disney refuses to do anything like this. Every single thing they do is demolishing all of this to pave the way for their own IPs. They are quite literally building an altar to themselves.

I try not to get held up on the destruction of Tom Sawyer Island because to me it was inevitable. @marisa # put it well that this is a common trend and the fact that it made it this far is a miracle. It's old, it takes up a lot of space, and the common conception is that the general public does not care for it, which I think is not completely correct but so be it.

But even if you ignore the fact that it is more IP garbage, I still think Cars land is a bad fit. The land is Called Frontier land, and while the setting of Cars being in the deserts of Arizona is a perfect location (which they aren't using in the concept art?), the last thing I think of when I think of the American Frontier is modern day cars. I do not think the themes will mesh well with either Frontier Land or Liberty Square, which is something that Disney used to care about, but maybe they don't care because less people in general care now, idk.

Another more Personal issue I have with it is I like it much better when the parks are unique, especially the American ones. Obviously, every park historically has been carbon copies of each other across the world, but as each one develops it usually gets more and more exclusive things. Not only do I think this is fun, but as a marketing technique I think it works well to make people want to visit different parks. There is already a Cars land in Disney California adventure, and while the rides are going to be different, it's still kind of lame and the easy route that both Florida and California are going to have a Cars land. I should not be begging for an ounce of creativity from fucking Disney.

The root of the problem at the end of the day though is I have lost confidence in their ability to execute anything good. They could announce anything, even things I think are good ideas, and I will still be very skeptical because more than half of park projects recently have been lacking in my opinion. Maybe they can get their shit together in terms of quality, only time will tell. The overall direction of the theming will never vibe well with me, but they can at least start making good things with good details again.

Is this like a current time period Cars attraction or is it delve into Cars lore with a historical view of the Cars universe? An Old West with Model T's and other really old cars might work, but somehow I doubt they are doing that.

The actors' job is the learn their lines and do what the director tells them to do. A thoughtful director can get a good performance out of a bad actor.

That said, so many of these recent live-action adaptations have made the baffling decision to cast very inexperienced actors in the title roles. Forget working in front of a green screen, these are people who have limited experience acting in film at all. Zegler is an example of this, she was basically plucked right out of high school on the strength of a handful of school musicals and put straight into Spielberg's West Side Story. Snow White is like her third movie ever. Halle Bailey had never acted in anything prior to Little Mermaid, and Mena Massoud was basically a bit actor with a half-dozen TV credits before getting Aladdin.

But really the actors are the least of the problems of these movies, you could put 1965 Ann-Margaret in the Snow White role and this movie would still be a bloated overlong autotuned uncanny valley corporate fever dream written by a committee of HR middle managers.
 
Fucking shit of course they saw replacing splash mountain with a Tiana ride set in Louisiana as a green light to put more ill fitting IP shit in that area. I hate modern Disney parks. And of course they dont understand that Cars Land in California was a hit because the Imagineers cared about what they were making, not because people love the IP about Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy as talking cars.
